Trouble: when Jesus Was Crucified

The crucifixion of Jesus Christ stands as a pivotal event in Christian theology, marking the culmination of His earthly ministry and the fulfillment of Old Testament prophecies concerning the Messiah. This event is characterized by profound trouble and turmoil, both in the physical and spiritual realms, as depicted in the Gospel accounts.

Betrayal and Arrest

The trouble leading to the crucifixion began with the betrayal by Judas Iscariot, one of Jesus' own disciples. In the Garden of Gethsemane, Judas identified Jesus to the arresting officers with a kiss, an act of treachery that set the stage for the subsequent trials and crucifixion (Matthew 26:47-50). This betrayal fulfilled the prophecy found in Psalm 41:9, "Even my close friend, whom I trusted, he who shared my bread, has lifted up his heel against me."

Trials and Condemnation

Following His arrest, Jesus faced a series of unjust trials before Jewish and Roman authorities. He was brought before the Sanhedrin, where false witnesses accused Him, yet their testimonies did not agree (Mark 14:55-59). Despite the lack of credible evidence, the high priest condemned Him for blasphemy after Jesus affirmed His identity as the Son of God (Mark 14:61-64).

Jesus was then taken to Pontius Pilate, the Roman governor, who found no fault in Him. However, under pressure from the crowd and Jewish leaders, Pilate capitulated and sentenced Jesus to be crucified (John 19:4-16). This sequence of events highlights the political and social turmoil surrounding Jesus' crucifixion, as well as the fulfillment of Isaiah 53:7, "He was oppressed and afflicted, yet He did not open His mouth."

The Crucifixion

The crucifixion itself was a scene of immense physical and spiritual trouble. Jesus was scourged, mocked, and forced to carry His cross to Golgotha, the place of execution (John 19:17). The soldiers cast lots for His garments, fulfilling the prophecy in Psalm 22:18, "They divide My garments among them and cast lots for My clothing."

As Jesus hung on the cross, He experienced the weight of humanity's sin, crying out, "My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?" (Matthew 27:46). This moment of spiritual anguish reflects the separation from the Father that Jesus endured on behalf of sinners.

Signs and Wonders

The crucifixion was accompanied by extraordinary signs and wonders, indicating the cosmic significance of the event. Darkness fell over the land from the sixth to the ninth hour (Matthew 27:45), symbolizing the judgment and sorrow of the moment. At the moment of Jesus' death, the curtain of the temple was torn in two, the earth quaked, and the tombs broke open, with many saints being raised to life (Matthew 27:51-53). These events underscored the profound spiritual upheaval and the inauguration of a new covenant between God and humanity.

Reactions and Aftermath

The reactions to Jesus' crucifixion were varied. The centurion and those with him, witnessing the events, declared, "Truly this was the Son of God!" (Matthew 27:54). Meanwhile, the disciples were scattered, and many followers were left in despair, not yet understanding the necessity of the crucifixion for the redemption of mankind.

The trouble surrounding Jesus' crucifixion was not the end of the account, as it set the stage for His victorious resurrection, which would bring hope and salvation to all who believe.
