Introduction

The concept of "Our King" in the Bible is a profound and multifaceted theme that encompasses the sovereignty, authority, and divine rulership of God over His people. This entry explores the biblical understanding of God as King, the messianic fulfillment in Jesus Christ, and the implications for believers.

God as King in the Old Testament

The Old Testament frequently portrays God as the supreme King over all creation. His kingship is characterized by His eternal reign, justice, and righteousness. In Psalm 47:7-8, the psalmist declares, "For God is King of all the earth; sing profound praises to Him. God reigns over the nations; God is seated on His holy throne." This passage emphasizes God's universal sovereignty and His rightful place as the ruler of all nations.

The Israelites recognized God's kingship in their worship and governance. In 1 Samuel 8, when the Israelites demanded a human king, God reminded them through the prophet Samuel that He was their true King. Despite their request, God allowed them to have a human king, yet He remained the ultimate authority.

The Messianic King

The Old Testament also contains numerous prophecies about a coming King from the line of David who would establish an everlasting kingdom. Isaiah 9:6-7 speaks of this anticipated ruler: "For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given, and the government will be upon His shoulders. And He will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Of the increase of His government and peace there will be no end. He will reign on the throne of David and over his kingdom, to establish and sustain it with justice and righteousness from that time and forevermore."

These prophecies find their fulfillment in Jesus Christ, who is recognized as the promised Messiah and King. The New Testament affirms Jesus' kingship, beginning with the announcement of His birth. In Matthew 2:2, the Magi inquire, "Where is the One who has been born King of the Jews? We saw His star in the east and have come to worship Him."

Jesus Christ: Our King

Jesus' earthly ministry further revealed His identity as King. He proclaimed the coming of the Kingdom of God and demonstrated His authority over nature, sickness, and sin. In John 18:36-37, during His trial before Pilate, Jesus affirmed His kingship: "My kingdom is not of this world... You say that I am a king. For this reason I was born and have come into the world, to testify to the truth."

The crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus are pivotal events that underscore His kingship. The inscription above the cross, "Jesus of Nazareth, the King of the Jews" (John 19:19), ironically proclaimed the truth of His royal identity. His resurrection and ascension confirmed His victory over sin and death, establishing Him as the eternal King.

The Reign of Our King

Believers are called to acknowledge and submit to the reign of Christ as King. In Philippians 2:9-11, Paul writes, "Therefore God exalted Him to the highest place and gave Him the name above all names, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father."

The reign of Christ is both a present reality and a future hope. He reigns in the hearts of believers and will one day return to establish His kingdom in its fullness. Revelation 19:16 describes His ultimate victory: "On His robe and on His thigh He has a name written: King of kings and Lord of lords."

Implications for Believers

The recognition of God and Christ as "Our King" carries significant implications for believers. It calls for a life of worship, obedience, and allegiance to His authority. Believers are to live as citizens of His kingdom, reflecting His values and proclaiming His reign to the world. The kingship of Christ offers hope, assurance, and a future inheritance for those who trust in Him.
