Definition and Meaning:
The term "purely" is derived from the concept of purity, which in biblical terms often refers to moral and spiritual cleanliness. It implies actions, thoughts, and intentions that are untainted by sin or corruption. In the Bible, purity is a significant theme, reflecting God's holiness and the call for His people to live in a manner that is pleasing to Him.

Biblical Context:
Purity is a recurring theme throughout Scripture, emphasizing the importance of living a life that is set apart for God. The concept of purity is not only limited to physical cleanliness but extends to the heart, mind, and spirit. The Bible frequently contrasts purity with impurity, urging believers to pursue the former as a reflection of their relationship with God.

Old Testament References:
In the Old Testament, purity is often associated with ceremonial laws and rituals. For example, the Israelites were given specific instructions on how to maintain ceremonial purity, which included dietary laws, cleansing rituals, and moral conduct. Leviticus 11:44 states, "For I am the LORD your God; consecrate yourselves therefore, and be holy, because I am holy." This verse underscores the call to purity as a reflection of God's own holiness.

New Testament References:
The New Testament expands on the concept of purity, emphasizing the internal rather than just the external. Jesus taught that purity of heart is crucial, as seen in Matthew 5:8, "Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God." This beatitude highlights the importance of inner purity as a condition for experiencing God's presence.

The Apostle Paul also addresses purity in his epistles. In Philippians 4:8, he encourages believers to focus on things that are pure: "Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think on these things." Here, purity is linked to the believer's thought life, suggesting that what occupies the mind should be free from moral corruption.

Theological Significance:
Purity is integral to the Christian life, reflecting the transformative work of the Holy Spirit. It is both a gift and a responsibility. Believers are made pure through the sacrificial death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, who cleanses them from sin. However, they are also called to actively pursue purity in their daily lives, as seen in 1 John 3:3, "And everyone who has this hope in Him purifies himself, just as He is pure."

Practical Application:
Living purely involves a commitment to holiness in every aspect of life. This includes guarding one's heart and mind, making choices that align with biblical values, and seeking to reflect Christ's character in interactions with others. It requires vigilance against the influences of the world that seek to corrupt and defile.

Conclusion:
While the Bible does not use the term "purely" explicitly, the concept is deeply embedded in the call to live a life that honors God. Through the power of the Holy Spirit, believers are equipped to pursue purity, reflecting the holiness of God in a world that often values the opposite.

PURE; PURELY; PURITY

pur, pur'-li, pu'-ri-ti: This group of words has in the Old Testament and the New Testament an almost exclusively ethical significance, though the word "pure" is of course used also in its literal sense of freedom from alloy or other alien matter (Exodus 25:11, etc.). "Pure" in the Old Testament represents many Hebrew words, most frequently Tahor; "purely," occurs once only in the King James Version, as the translation of bor, properly "that which cleanses" (compare Job 9:30, the Revised Version margin "Hebrew `cleanse my hands with lye,' " i.e. alkali for soap) in Isaiah 1:25, the Revised Version (British and American) "thoroughly (margin "as with lye," the King James Version "purely") purge away thy dross"; "pureness" is the King James Version translation of the same word in Job 22:30, the Revised Version (British and American) "cleanness." In the New Testament "pure" is the translation chiefly of katharos (Matthew 5:8, Blessed are the pure in heart," etc.), but also of hagnos (Philippians 4:8 1 Timothy 5:22 James 3:17 1 John 3:3 -always in an ethical sense). A different word (eilikrines) is used in 2 Peter 3:1, the Revised Version (British and American) "sincere." "Purity" (hagneia) occurs only in the King James Version in 1 Timothy 4:12; 1 Timothy 5:2; in the Revised Version (British and American) in 2 Corinthians 11:3 (as the translation of tes hagnotelos).
