The concept of "remembers" in the Bible is deeply rooted in the nature of God and His relationship with humanity. The act of remembering is not merely a mental exercise but is often associated with covenantal faithfulness, divine intervention, and the fulfillment of promises. In the Scriptures, both God and humans are called to remember, each with significant theological implications.

God Remembers

In the biblical narrative, when God remembers, it signifies His intention to act according to His promises and covenant. This is not to suggest that God forgets, but rather that His remembrance is a prelude to divine action. For instance, in Genesis 8:1, "But God remembered Noah and all the animals and livestock that were with him in the ark, and God caused a wind to pass over the earth, and the waters subsided." Here, God's remembrance leads to the cessation of the floodwaters, demonstrating His faithfulness to Noah.

Similarly, in Exodus 2:24, "So God heard their groaning, and He remembered His covenant with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob." This remembrance prompts God to deliver the Israelites from Egyptian bondage, underscoring His commitment to His covenant people.

Human Remembrance

Humans are frequently exhorted to remember God's works, commandments, and covenant. This act of remembrance is integral to maintaining faithfulness and obedience. In Deuteronomy 8:18, the Israelites are instructed, "But remember that it is the LORD your God who gives you the power to gain wealth, that He may confirm His covenant that He swore to your fathers, as it is today." Here, remembrance serves as a safeguard against pride and self-reliance, reminding the people of their dependence on God.

The Psalms often reflect on the importance of remembering God's deeds. Psalm 77:11 states, "I will remember the works of the LORD; yes, I will remember Your wonders of old." This act of remembrance is a source of comfort and encouragement, reinforcing trust in God's continued faithfulness.

Remembrance in Worship and Ritual

Remembrance is also a key element in worship and ritual. The Passover, for example, is instituted as a memorial of God's deliverance of Israel from Egypt. In Exodus 12:14, God commands, "This day is to be a memorial for you, and you are to celebrate it as a feast to the LORD; as a lasting ordinance for the generations to come." This ritual act of remembrance serves to instill the account of God's salvation into the collective memory of the people.

In the New Testament, Jesus establishes the Lord's Supper as a remembrance of His sacrificial death. In 1 Corinthians 11:24-25, Paul recounts Jesus' words: "And when He had given thanks, He broke it and said, 'This is My body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of Me.' In the same way, after supper He took the cup, saying, 'This cup is the new covenant in My blood; do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.'" This act of remembrance is central to Christian worship, focusing believers on the redemptive work of Christ.

Divine Forgetfulness

Interestingly, the Bible also speaks of God choosing not to remember certain things, particularly sins. In Isaiah 43:25, God declares, "I, yes I, am He who blots out your transgressions for My own sake, and remembers your sins no more." This divine forgetfulness is an expression of God's grace and mercy, highlighting the transformative power of forgiveness.

In summary, the theme of remembrance in the Bible encompasses God's faithfulness, human responsibility, and the centrality of memory in worship and covenantal relationships. It is a profound reminder of the interconnectedness of divine action and human response throughout the biblical narrative.
