Spiritual Warfare

Spiritual warfare refers to the Christian concept of fighting against the work of preternatural evil forces. It is based on the biblical belief in evil spirits or demons that are said to intervene in human affairs in various ways. The Bible presents spiritual warfare as a reality for believers, emphasizing the need for vigilance, prayer, and the use of spiritual armor.

The Apostle Paul provides a foundational text for understanding spiritual warfare in Ephesians 6:10-18. He writes, "Finally, be strong in the Lord and in His mighty power. Put on the full armor of God, so that you can make your stand against the devil’s schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this world’s darkness, and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms" (Ephesians 6:10-12). Paul then describes the armor of God, which includes the belt of truth, the breastplate of righteousness, the gospel of peace, the shield of faith, the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.

The New Testament also highlights the authority given to believers over demonic forces. In Luke 10:19, Jesus tells His disciples, "Behold, I have given you authority to tread on snakes and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy. Nothing will harm you" . This authority is exercised through faith, prayer, and the proclamation of God's Word.

Intercession

Intercession is the act of intervening or mediating on behalf of another through prayer. It is a vital aspect of Christian life and spiritual warfare, as believers are called to pray for others, including those who are lost, suffering, or under spiritual attack.

The Bible provides numerous examples of intercessory prayer. One of the most notable is found in the life of Moses, who interceded for the Israelites on several occasions. In Exodus 32:11-14, Moses pleads with God to spare the Israelites after they sinned by worshiping the golden calf. His intercession is marked by a deep concern for God's glory and the well-being of the people.

The New Testament further emphasizes the importance of intercession. In 1 Timothy 2:1-2, Paul urges, "First of all, then, I urge that petitions, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgiving be offered for everyone—for kings and all those in authority—so that we may lead tranquil and quiet lives in all godliness and dignity" . This passage highlights the broad scope of intercessory prayer, which includes praying for leaders and all people.

Jesus Christ Himself is the ultimate intercessor. Hebrews 7:25 states, "Therefore He is able to save completely those who draw near to God through Him, since He always lives to intercede for them" . Christ's intercession is ongoing and serves as a model for believers to follow.

In the context of spiritual warfare, intercession is a powerful tool. It involves standing in the gap for others, seeking God's intervention in their lives, and battling spiritual forces through prayer. Believers are encouraged to be persistent in intercession, as seen in the parable of the persistent widow in Luke 18:1-8, where Jesus teaches the importance of persistent prayer.

In summary, spiritual warfare and intercession are interconnected aspects of the Christian faith. Believers are called to engage in spiritual battles through the power of God and to intercede for others, relying on the authority and example of Jesus Christ.
