Chastity: Saints are Kept In

Chastity, a virtue highly esteemed within Christian doctrine, refers to the practice of refraining from sexual immorality and maintaining purity in thought, word, and deed. It is a manifestation of self-control and a commitment to honoring God with one's body. The Bible provides numerous exhortations and examples that underscore the importance of chastity for believers, often linking it to holiness and sanctification.

Biblical Foundations

The call to chastity is rooted in the understanding that the body is a temple of the Holy Spirit. In 1 Corinthians 6:18-20 , the Apostle Paul admonishes believers: "Flee from sexual immorality. Every other sin a man can commit is outside his body, but he who sins sexually sins against his own body. Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore glorify God with your body."

Chastity is not merely the absence of sexual activity outside of marriage but encompasses purity of heart and mind. Jesus expands on this in Matthew 5:27-28 , stating, "You have heard that it was said, 'Do not commit adultery.' But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman to lust after her has already committed adultery with her in his heart."

The Role of Chastity in Sanctification

Chastity is integral to the process of sanctification, the ongoing work of the Holy Spirit in a believer's life to make them more like Christ. In 1 Thessalonians 4:3-5 , Paul writes, "For it is God’s will that you should be sanctified: You should avoid sexual immorality; each of you must know how to control his own body in holiness and honor, not in lustful passion like the Gentiles who do not know God."

The pursuit of chastity is a response to God's call to holiness, as seen in 1 Peter 1:15-16 : "But just as He who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do, for it is written: 'Be holy, because I am holy.'"

Chastity as a Fruit of the Spirit

Chastity is closely related to the fruit of the Spirit, particularly self-control. Galatians 5:22-23 lists the fruit of the Spirit, which includes "love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control." The cultivation of these virtues aids believers in living a chaste life, as they rely on the Holy Spirit's power to resist temptation and live according to God's standards.

Examples of Chastity in Scripture

The Bible provides examples of individuals who exemplified chastity. Joseph, in Genesis 39, is a notable example. When tempted by Potiphar's wife, Joseph refused her advances, saying, "How then could I do such a wicked thing and sin against God?" (Genesis 39:9). His commitment to chastity was rooted in his reverence for God and his understanding of sin's gravity.

Similarly, the account of Daniel and his companions in Babylon demonstrates a commitment to purity and holiness. Though not explicitly about sexual purity, their refusal to defile themselves with the king's food and drink (Daniel 1:8) reflects a broader commitment to living a life set apart for God.

The Call to Chastity for All Believers

Chastity is a calling for all believers, regardless of their state in life. Whether single, married, or celibate, Christians are called to live in a manner that honors God with their bodies. Hebrews 13:4 emphasizes the sanctity of marriage and the importance of sexual purity: "Marriage should be honored by all and the marriage bed kept undefiled, for God will judge the sexually immoral and adulterers."

In a world that often promotes sexual immorality, the call to chastity is countercultural. Yet, it is a vital aspect of the Christian life, reflecting a commitment to God's design for human sexuality and a desire to live in accordance with His will. Through the power of the Holy Spirit, believers are equipped to pursue chastity and experience the freedom and joy that come from living a life pleasing to God.

And I find more bitter than death the woman, whose heart is snares and nets, and her hands as bands: whoever pleases God shall escape from her; but the sinner shall be taken by her.
