Chastity, as a virtue, is prominently addressed in the teachings of the Apostle Paul, who emphasizes its importance within the Christian life. Paul's epistles provide a comprehensive understanding of chastity, particularly in the context of sexual purity and moral integrity.

Paul's Teachings on Chastity

Paul's letters to the early Christian communities frequently address issues of sexual morality, urging believers to live lives marked by purity and self-control. In 1 Thessalonians 4:3-5, Paul writes, "For it is God’s will that you should be sanctified: You should avoid sexual immorality; each of you should know how to possess his own vessel in sanctification and honor, not in lustful passion like the Gentiles who do not know God." Here, Paul underscores the call to sanctification, linking chastity with the broader process of becoming holy and set apart for God.

In 1 Corinthians 6:18-20, Paul further elaborates on the significance of chastity, stating, "Flee from sexual immorality. Every other sin a man can commit is outside his body, but he who sins sexually sins against his own body. Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore glorify God with your body." This passage highlights the theological foundation for chastity, emphasizing the believer's body as a temple of the Holy Spirit and a vessel for glorifying God.

Chastity in Marriage and Singleness

Paul's teachings on chastity extend to both married and single individuals. In 1 Corinthians 7, Paul addresses the Corinthian church regarding marriage and celibacy. He acknowledges marriage as a legitimate context for sexual relations, stating, "But because there is so much sexual immorality, each man should have his own wife, and each woman her own husband" (1 Corinthians 7:2). However, Paul also extols the virtues of singleness and celibacy, suggesting that those who can remain unmarried and chaste may do so to devote themselves more fully to the Lord's work (1 Corinthians 7:32-35).

Paul's counsel in this chapter reflects a balanced view of chastity, recognizing the legitimacy of sexual relations within marriage while also affirming the value of celibacy for those who are called to it. He advises, "It is good for them to remain unmarried, as I am. But if they cannot control themselves, let them marry. For it is better to marry than to burn with passion" (1 Corinthians 7:8-9).

Chastity as a Fruit of the Spirit

In Galatians 5:22-23, Paul lists the fruit of the Spirit, which includes self-control, a key component of chastity. "But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. Against such things there is no law." The cultivation of self-control, empowered by the Holy Spirit, enables believers to live chaste lives, resisting the temptations of the flesh and maintaining moral purity.

Paul's Exhortation to the Young

Paul's letters to Timothy and Titus also contain exhortations regarding chastity, particularly for younger believers. In 1 Timothy 4:12, Paul encourages Timothy, "Let no one despise your youth, but set an example for the believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith, and in purity." Similarly, in Titus 2:6, Paul instructs Titus, "In the same way, urge the younger men to be self-controlled." These instructions highlight the importance of chastity as a witness to others and as a reflection of one's commitment to Christ.

Through his epistles, Paul provides a robust framework for understanding chastity as an essential aspect of Christian discipleship, urging believers to pursue purity in thought, word, and deed as they seek to honor God with their lives.
