Edification: Mutual, Commanded

Edification, in the context of Christian theology, refers to the building up or strengthening of the faith and character of believers. The concept of mutual edification is deeply rooted in the New Testament, where believers are encouraged to support and build one another up in their spiritual journey. This mutual edification is not merely a suggestion but a command, reflecting the communal nature of the Christian faith.

Biblical Foundation

The Apostle Paul, in his epistles, frequently emphasizes the importance of mutual edification among believers. In Romans 14:19 , Paul writes, "So then, let us pursue what leads to peace and to mutual edification." Here, the pursuit of peace and edification is presented as a collective responsibility, urging believers to actively engage in actions that promote spiritual growth and harmony within the community.

Similarly, in 1 Thessalonians 5:11 , Paul instructs, "Therefore encourage and build one another up, just as you are already doing." This verse highlights the ongoing nature of edification, suggesting that it is a continuous process that requires the active participation of all members of the Christian community.

The Role of Spiritual Gifts

The New Testament also links mutual edification to the use of spiritual gifts. In 1 Corinthians 14:26 , Paul addresses the Corinthian church, saying, "What then shall we say, brothers? When you come together, each of you has a hymn, a word of instruction, a revelation, a tongue, or an interpretation. Everything must be done so that the church may be built up." This passage underscores the diversity of gifts within the body of Christ and the necessity of using these gifts for the edification of the church.

Practical Expressions of Mutual Edification

Mutual edification can manifest in various forms within the Christian community. It includes teaching, admonishing, and encouraging one another, as well as bearing each other's burdens. In Colossians 3:16 , Paul exhorts believers, "Let the word of Christ richly dwell within you as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom, and as you sing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs with gratitude in your hearts to God." This verse illustrates how the word of Christ serves as the foundation for mutual teaching and encouragement.

Furthermore, mutual edification involves a commitment to love and serve one another. Galatians 5:13 states, "For you, brothers, were called to freedom; but do not use your freedom as an opportunity for the flesh. Rather, serve one another in love." This service, motivated by love, is a practical expression of the edification that strengthens the bonds within the Christian community.

Challenges and Responsibilities

While mutual edification is commanded, it is not without challenges. Believers are called to exercise patience, humility, and forgiveness, recognizing that the process of building one another up can be complex and requires grace. Ephesians 4:2-3 advises, "Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love, and with diligence to preserve the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace."

In summary, mutual edification is a vital aspect of the Christian life, commanded by Scripture and essential for the growth and unity of the church. It involves the active participation of all believers, utilizing their diverse gifts and committing to love and serve one another in the spirit of Christ.
