In the biblical narrative, the Egyptians are often depicted as harsh and oppressive masters, particularly in their relationship with the Israelites. This portrayal is most prominently featured in the Book of Exodus, where the Egyptians, under Pharaoh's rule, subjected the Israelites to severe bondage and affliction.

Oppression of the Israelites

The Egyptians' role as oppressive masters is introduced in Exodus 1:8-14. A new Pharaoh, who did not know Joseph, arose and perceived the growing population of the Israelites as a threat. To suppress them, he imposed harsh labor upon them:

"So they put slave masters over them to oppress them with forced labor, and they built Pithom and Rameses as store cities for Pharaoh. But the more they were oppressed, the more they multiplied and spread; so the Egyptians came to dread the Israelites and worked them ruthlessly. They made their lives bitter with hard labor in brick and mortar and with all kinds of work in the fields; in all their hard labor the Egyptians used them
