Praise: should be offered with the Lips

Praise, as an expression of reverence and adoration towards God, is a central theme throughout the Bible. It is not only an inward attitude of the heart but also an outward expression that is often articulated through the lips. The act of vocalizing praise is a significant aspect of worship and is encouraged and exemplified in numerous passages of Scripture.

Biblical Foundation

The Bible emphasizes the importance of verbal praise as a means of glorifying God. In the Psalms, which serve as a rich repository of praise, the psalmists frequently exhort believers to use their voices in worship. Psalm 34:1 declares, "I will bless the LORD at all times; His praise will always be on my lips." This verse underscores the continuous nature of praise and the role of the lips in expressing it.

Similarly, Psalm 63:3-4 states, "Because Your loving devotion is better than life, my lips will glorify You. So I will bless You as long as I live; in Your name I will lift my hands." Here, the psalmist connects the act of praising with the lips to the recognition of God's steadfast love and faithfulness.

New Testament Perspective

The New Testament also affirms the practice of offering praise with the lips. Hebrews 13:15 instructs believers, "Through Jesus, therefore, let us continually offer to God a sacrifice of praise, the fruit of lips that confess His name." This passage highlights the concept of praise as a sacrificial offering, one that is pleasing to God and made possible through Jesus Christ.

In the Gospels, Jesus Himself acknowledges the importance of vocal praise. In Luke 19:37-40 , as Jesus approaches Jerusalem, the crowd of disciples begins to joyfully praise God with loud voices for all the miracles they have seen. When the Pharisees ask Jesus to rebuke them, He responds, "I tell you, if they remain silent, the very stones will cry out." This response emphasizes the necessity and inevitability of vocal praise.

Expressions of Praise

Praise with the lips can take various forms, including singing, speaking, and shouting. Singing is a particularly powerful form of praise, as seen in Ephesians 5:19 , which encourages believers to "speak to one another with psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs, singing and making music in your hearts to the Lord." This verse illustrates the communal and edifying nature of vocal praise.

Moreover, the act of speaking or declaring God's attributes and works is another vital expression of praise. Psalm 71:8 proclaims, "My mouth is filled with Your praise and with Your splendor all day long." This continuous declaration serves as a testament to God's greatness and a means of edifying others.

The Role of the Heart

While the lips are the instruments of praise, the heart is the wellspring from which true praise flows. Jesus warns against empty, lip-service worship in Matthew 15:8 , quoting Isaiah, "These people honor Me with their lips, but their hearts are far from Me." Genuine praise must originate from a heart that is aligned with God's will and filled with gratitude and love for Him.

Conclusion

The Bible consistently teaches that praise should be offered with the lips as an expression of worship and adoration towards God. This vocalization of praise is not only a personal act of devotion but also a communal practice that strengthens the body of Christ. Through singing, speaking, and declaring God's goodness, believers fulfill their calling to glorify God with their whole being.
