Praise: Saints should Triumph In

Praise is a central theme in the life of a believer, serving as both an expression of worship and a declaration of God's greatness. The act of praising God is not only a duty but a privilege that brings joy and triumph to the saints. Throughout Scripture, the call to praise is intertwined with the believer's journey, reflecting a heart that is aligned with God's will and purposes.

Biblical Foundation

The Bible is replete with exhortations for the saints to engage in praise. In the Psalms, which serve as the hymnbook of ancient Israel, praise is a recurring theme. Psalm 150:6 declares, "Let everything that has breath praise the LORD. Hallelujah!" This verse encapsulates the universal call to praise, emphasizing that all creation is invited to join in the chorus of adoration.

Praise as Triumph

For the saints, praise is not merely a response to favorable circumstances but a triumphant declaration of faith in God's sovereignty and goodness. In 2 Chronicles 20:21-22 , we see a vivid example of praise leading to victory: "Then Jehoshaphat consulted with the people and appointed those who would sing to the LORD and praise the splendor of His holiness. As they went out before the army, they were singing: 'Give thanks to the LORD, for His loving devotion endures forever.' The moment they began their shouts and praises, the LORD set ambushes against the men of Ammon, Moab, and Mount Seir who had come against Judah, and they were defeated."

This passage illustrates how praise can be a weapon of spiritual warfare, leading to triumph over adversaries. The act of praising God in the face of opposition demonstrates trust in His power and promises.

Praise in the New Testament

The New Testament continues this theme, urging believers to live lives marked by praise. In Ephesians 5:19-20 , Paul instructs the church to be "speaking to one another with psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs, singing and making music in your hearts to the Lord, always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ." Here, praise is depicted as a communal and continuous activity, fostering unity and gratitude among the saints.

The Role of Praise in Suffering

Praise is particularly significant in times of suffering and trial. The Apostle Paul and Silas exemplify this in Acts 16:25 : "About midnight, Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the other prisoners were listening to them." Despite their imprisonment, their praise became a testimony to those around them and preceded a miraculous deliverance.

Eternal Praise

The ultimate triumph of praise is seen in the heavenly vision of Revelation, where the saints join the heavenly hosts in eternal worship. Revelation 7:9-10 describes this scene: "After this I looked and saw a multitude too large to count, from every nation and tribe and people and tongue, standing before the throne and before the Lamb. They were wearing white robes and holding palm branches in their hands. And they cried out in a loud voice: 'Salvation to our God, who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb!'"

In this eschatological vision, praise is the eternal occupation of the redeemed, a triumphant celebration of God's redemptive work through Christ.

Conclusion

The call to praise is a call to triumph in the Lord. It is an acknowledgment of His majesty, a declaration of His deeds, and a foretaste of the eternal worship that awaits the saints. Through praise, believers experience the joy and victory that come from a life centered on God.
