Praise: Saints should Glory In

Praise is a fundamental aspect of the Christian faith, serving as an expression of reverence, adoration, and gratitude towards God. It is both a duty and a privilege for the saints, who are called to glorify God in all circumstances. The Bible provides numerous exhortations and examples of praise, emphasizing its importance in the life of a believer.

Biblical Foundation

The call to praise is deeply rooted in Scripture. The Psalms, in particular, are replete with calls to praise God. Psalm 150:6 declares, "Let everything that has breath praise the LORD. Hallelujah!" This verse encapsulates the universal call to praise, extending to all creation. Saints, as God's chosen people, are especially called to lead in this act of worship.

Praise as a Command

Praise is not merely a suggestion but a command for the saints. In 1 Chronicles 16:28-29 , the call is clear: "Ascribe to the LORD, O families of the nations, ascribe to the LORD glory and strength. Ascribe to the LORD the glory due His name; bring an offering and come before Him. Worship the LORD in the splendor of His holiness." This passage underscores the obligation of the saints to recognize and declare God's glory.

Expressions of Praise

Praise can be expressed in various forms, including singing, prayer, and proclamation. Ephesians 5:19-20 encourages believers to engage in "speaking to one another with psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs, singing and making music in your hearts to the Lord, always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ." This highlights the communal and personal dimensions of praise.

Praise in All Circumstances

The saints are called to praise God not only in times of joy but also in times of trial. The Apostle Paul, writing from prison, exhorts the Philippians in Philippians 4:4 , "Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice!" This call to rejoice and praise God at all times reflects a deep trust in His sovereignty and goodness.

The Purpose of Praise

Praise serves to glorify God and edify the believer. It is an acknowledgment of God's attributes, works, and promises. Psalm 103:1-2 illustrates this purpose: "Bless the LORD, O my soul, and all that is within me, bless His holy name. Bless the LORD, O my soul, and do not forget all His kind deeds." Through praise, the saints remember and proclaim God's faithfulness and mercy.

Praise as a Witness

The praise of the saints also serves as a testimony to the world. In 1 Peter 2:9 , believers are described as "a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for God's own possession, to proclaim the virtues of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light." The act of praising God publicly declares His greatness and draws others to Him.

Eternal Praise

The saints' praise is not limited to this life but extends into eternity. Revelation 5:13 provides a glimpse of the heavenly worship: "And I heard every creature in heaven and on earth and under the earth and in the sea, and all that is in them, saying: 'To Him who sits on the throne and to the Lamb be praise and honor and glory and power forever and ever!'" This eternal perspective encourages believers to cultivate a life of praise now, in anticipation of the eternal worship to come.
