Praise is Due to God on Account of Deliverance

The theme of praising God for deliverance is a recurring motif throughout the Bible, reflecting the deep gratitude and reverence that believers are called to express in response to God's saving acts. This praise is not merely a ritualistic duty but a heartfelt acknowledgment of God's power, mercy, and faithfulness.

Old Testament Foundations

The Old Testament is replete with instances where God's people offer praise following deliverance. One of the most notable examples is the Song of Moses and Miriam in Exodus 15, where the Israelites celebrate their deliverance from Egyptian bondage. After crossing the Red Sea, Moses and the Israelites sing, "I will sing to the LORD, for He is highly exalted. The horse and rider He has thrown into the sea" (Exodus 15:1). This song is a powerful testament to God's intervention and the appropriate response of worship and praise.

The Psalms, often referred to as the hymnbook of ancient Israel, frequently highlight the theme of deliverance. Psalm 34:4-7 states, "I sought the LORD, and He answered me; He delivered me from all my fears. Those who look to Him are radiant with joy; their faces shall never be ashamed. This poor man called out, and the LORD heard him; He saved him from all his troubles. The angel of the LORD encamps around those who fear Him, and he delivers them." Here, the psalmist emphasizes personal deliverance and the resulting joy and praise that follow.

Prophetic Literature

The prophets also speak of deliverance and the resulting praise due to God. Isaiah 12:1-2 declares, "In that day you will say: 'I will give thanks to You, O LORD. Although You were angry with me, Your anger has turned away, and You have comforted me. Surely God is my salvation; I will trust and not be afraid. For the LORD GOD is my strength and my song, and He also has become my salvation.'" This passage highlights the transformation from divine wrath to salvation, prompting a response of thanksgiving and praise.

New Testament Fulfillment

In the New Testament, the theme of deliverance takes on a new dimension with the coming of Jesus Christ. The deliverance from sin and death through Christ's sacrifice is the ultimate act of salvation, warranting eternal praise. In Luke 1:68-75 , Zechariah's prophecy exclaims, "Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel, because He has visited and redeemed His people. He has raised up a horn of salvation for us in the house of His servant David, as He spoke through His holy prophets, those of ages past, salvation from our enemies and from the hand of all who hate us."

The Apostle Paul, in his letters, often breaks into doxologies, praising God for the deliverance found in Christ. In Romans 7:24-25 , he writes, "What a wretched man I am! Who will rescue me from this body of death? Thanks be to God, through Jesus Christ our Lord!" Here, Paul acknowledges the deliverance from sin's bondage and responds with gratitude and praise.

Eschatological Praise

The book of Revelation presents a vision of ultimate deliverance and the eternal praise that follows. Revelation 7:10 describes a great multitude crying out, "Salvation to our God, who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb!" This scene encapsulates the culmination of God's redemptive work and the unending praise that is due to Him.

Conclusion

Throughout Scripture, the response to God's deliverance is consistently one of praise. Whether it is deliverance from physical enemies, personal trials, or the ultimate deliverance from sin and death through Jesus Christ, the appropriate response is to glorify God. This praise is a recognition of His sovereignty, love, and faithfulness, and it serves as a testimony to others of His mighty works.
