Redemption: They Who Partake of Wait for the Completion of

Redemption, in the Christian theological context, refers to the deliverance from sin and its consequences, achieved through the sacrificial death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. This concept is central to Christian doctrine, emphasizing the transformative power of Christ's atonement and the hope of eternal life for believers. While redemption is initiated at the moment of faith in Christ, its full realization is an eschatological event, anticipated by believers who await its completion.

Biblical Foundation

The New Testament provides a robust framework for understanding redemption. In Ephesians 1:7, the Apostle Paul writes, "In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of His grace." This passage underscores the present reality of redemption as a gift of grace, accessed through faith in Christ's atoning sacrifice.

However, the New Testament also speaks of a future aspect of redemption. In Romans 8:23, Paul describes believers as those "who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, groaning inwardly as we wait eagerly for our adoption as sons, the redemption of our bodies." Here, redemption is portrayed as an ongoing process, culminating in the resurrection and glorification of the believer's body.

The Already and Not Yet

The concept of "already and not yet" is pivotal in understanding the dual nature of redemption. Believers are already redeemed in the sense that they have been justified and reconciled to God through Christ. Yet, they await the full manifestation of this redemption, which will be completed at the return of Christ. This tension is evident in Philippians 3:20-21, where Paul writes, "But our citizenship is in heaven, and we eagerly await a Savior from there, the Lord Jesus Christ, who, by the power that enables Him to subject all things to Himself, will transform our lowly bodies to be like His glorious body."

The Role of the Holy Spirit

The Holy Spirit plays a crucial role in the believer's experience of redemption. As the "guarantee of our inheritance" (Ephesians 1:14), the Spirit is both a seal of the believer's current redemption and a promise of its future completion. The indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit empowers believers to live in accordance with God's will, providing a foretaste of the full redemption to come.

Hope and Perseverance

The anticipation of redemption's completion is a source of hope and encouragement for believers. In Titus 2:13-14, Paul exhorts Christians to live godly lives "while we wait for the blessed hope—the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ, who gave Himself for us to redeem us from all lawlessness and to purify for Himself a people for His own possession, zealous for good deeds." This hope motivates believers to persevere in faith and holiness, confident in the promise of Christ's return and the ultimate fulfillment of redemption.

Eschatological Fulfillment

The completion of redemption is intricately linked to eschatological events, particularly the second coming of Christ and the establishment of God's eternal kingdom. Revelation 21:3-4 offers a vision of this consummation: "And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, 'Behold, the dwelling place of God is with man. He will dwell with them, and they will be His people, and God Himself will be with them as their God. He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.'"

In this ultimate redemption, the effects of sin and death are fully eradicated, and believers experience the fullness of life in the presence of God. This future reality is the culmination of the redemptive work begun in Christ, eagerly awaited by those who partake in the present reality of redemption.
