Riches: Deceitfulness of, Chokes the Word

The concept of riches and their potential to deceive and hinder spiritual growth is a recurring theme in the Bible. This idea is most prominently illustrated in the Parable of the Sower, as recounted in the Synoptic Gospels. In this parable, Jesus describes various types of soil that represent the hearts of those who hear the Word of God. The seed sown among thorns is particularly relevant to the discussion of riches.

In Matthew 13:22 , Jesus explains, "The seed sown among the thorns is the one who hears the word, but the worries of this life and the deceitfulness of wealth choke the word, and it becomes unfruitful." Here, the "deceitfulness of wealth" is identified as a factor that can choke the Word, rendering it unproductive in a person's life. The imagery of thorns suggests that riches can entangle and suffocate spiritual growth, preventing the Word from bearing fruit.

Mark 4:18-19 provides a similar account: "Still others are like the seed sown among the thorns. They hear the word, but the worries of this life, the deceitfulness of wealth, and the desires for other things come in and choke the word, and it becomes unfruitful." This passage emphasizes that wealth, along with worldly concerns and desires, can obstruct the transformative power of the Word.

Luke 8:14 also addresses this theme: "The seeds that fell among the thorns are those who hear, but as they go on their way, they are choked by the worries, riches, and pleasures of this life, and their fruit does not mature." The inclusion of "pleasures of this life" alongside riches highlights the broader context of worldly distractions that can impede spiritual maturity.

The deceitfulness of riches lies in their ability to promise security, satisfaction, and fulfillment, yet they often lead to spiritual complacency and distraction. Proverbs 11:28 warns, "He who trusts in his riches will fall, but the righteous will thrive like a green leaf." This proverb contrasts the fleeting nature of wealth with the enduring prosperity of righteousness.

The New Testament further cautions against the dangers of wealth. In 1 Timothy 6:9-10 , Paul writes, "Those who want to be rich, however, fall into temptation and become ensnared by many foolish and harmful desires that plunge them into ruin and destruction. For the love of money is the root of all kinds of evil. By craving it, some have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many sorrows." This passage underscores the peril of prioritizing wealth over faith, leading to spiritual downfall.

Jesus' teachings consistently highlight the incompatibility of serving both God and wealth. In Matthew 6:24 , He declares, "No one can serve two masters. Either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money." This statement reinforces the idea that allegiance to wealth can conflict with devotion to God.

The deceitfulness of riches is a cautionary theme that urges believers to remain vigilant against the allure of material wealth. By recognizing the potential for riches to choke the Word, Christians are encouraged to prioritize their spiritual well-being and seek first the kingdom of God, as instructed in Matthew 6:33 : "But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things will be added unto you."

He also that received seed among the thorns is he that hears the word; and the care of this world, and the deceitfulness of riches, choke the word, and he becomes unfruitful.
