The Loving-Kindness of God: Saints: Look for Mercy Through
Jump to: Torrey'sLibrarySubtopicsTerms

The concept of God's loving-kindness is a central theme throughout the Bible, reflecting His enduring mercy, compassion, and steadfast love towards His creation. This divine attribute is often associated with the Hebrew word "chesed," which encompasses kindness, loyalty, and mercy. The saints, or the faithful followers of God, are encouraged to seek and rely on this loving-kindness as they navigate their spiritual journeys.

Biblical Foundation

The loving-kindness of God is vividly portrayed in the Old Testament, particularly in the Psalms. Psalm 136 repeatedly emphasizes God's enduring mercy, stating, "Give thanks to the LORD, for He is good. His loving devotion endures forever" (Psalm 136:1). This refrain underscores the perpetual nature of God's mercy and kindness, which the saints are invited to trust and depend upon.

In the New Testament, the loving-kindness of God is manifested through the life and work of Jesus Christ. The Apostle Paul highlights this in his letter to Titus: "But when the kindness of God our Savior and His love for mankind appeared, He saved us, not by the righteous deeds we had done, but according to His mercy, through the washing of new birth and renewal by the Holy Spirit" (Titus 3:4-5). Here, God's loving-kindness is directly linked to the salvation offered through Christ, a gift of mercy that the saints are called to embrace.

Saints Seeking Mercy

Throughout Scripture, the saints are depicted as those who actively seek God's mercy and loving-kindness. King David, a man after God's own heart, frequently appeals to God's mercy in his prayers. In Psalm 51, a psalm of repentance, David cries out, "Have mercy on me, O God, according to Your loving devotion; according to Your great compassion, blot out my transgressions" (Psalm 51:1). This plea reflects the understanding that God's loving-kindness is the basis for forgiveness and restoration.

The prophet Daniel also exemplifies this reliance on divine mercy. In Daniel 9:18, he prays, "Give ear, O my God, and hear; open Your eyes and see the desolation of the city that bears Your name. We do not make requests of You because we are righteous, but because of Your great mercy" . Daniel's prayer acknowledges that it is not human righteousness but God's abundant mercy that provides hope and deliverance.

Practical Implications for Believers

For contemporary believers, the loving-kindness of God remains a source of comfort and strength. The saints are encouraged to approach God with confidence, knowing that His mercy is available to those who seek it earnestly. Hebrews 4:16 invites believers to "approach the throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need" . This assurance of God's loving-kindness empowers the saints to live lives marked by faith, repentance, and a deep trust in God's unfailing love.

In their daily walk, believers are called to reflect God's loving-kindness in their interactions with others. As recipients of divine mercy, they are to extend the same compassion and kindness to those around them, embodying the love of Christ in a broken world.
