The Providence of God: Saints should Pray in Dependence Upon

The providence of God refers to His divine guidance and care over all creation. It is the belief that God, in His sovereignty, orchestrates the events of the universe and the lives of individuals according to His perfect will and purpose. This doctrine is foundational to the Christian faith, emphasizing God's omnipotence, omniscience, and benevolence. For the saints, or believers, this understanding of God's providence is a source of comfort and assurance, encouraging them to live in a state of prayerful dependence upon Him.

Biblical Foundation

The Bible is replete with passages that highlight the providence of God and the call for believers to rely on Him through prayer. In the book of Proverbs, we are reminded of God's sovereign control: "The LORD has made everything for His purpose—even the wicked for the day of disaster" (Proverbs 16:4). This verse underscores the belief that nothing occurs outside of God's divine plan.

The New Testament further emphasizes the importance of prayer in the life of a believer. In Philippians 4:6-7, Paul exhorts the saints: "Be anxious for nothing, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus" . Here, prayer is presented as a means of entrusting one's concerns to God, acknowledging His providential care.

Dependence on God in Prayer

Prayer is an act of dependence, a recognition that human strength and wisdom are insufficient apart from God's guidance. Jesus Himself modeled this dependence in His earthly ministry. In the Garden of Gethsemane, He prayed, "My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from Me. Yet not as I will, but as You will" (Matthew 26:39). This prayer reflects a submission to the Father's will, trusting in His providential plan even in the face of suffering.

The Apostle James also instructs believers to seek God's wisdom through prayer: "If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all generously and without reproach, and it will be given to him" (James 1:5). This invitation to prayer is rooted in the confidence that God, in His providence, will provide what is needed for those who seek Him earnestly.

Examples of Providential Prayer

Throughout Scripture, there are numerous examples of saints who prayed in dependence upon God's providence. The account of Hannah in 1 Samuel 1 is a poignant illustration. Childless and in deep distress, Hannah prayed fervently to the Lord, trusting in His ability to change her circumstances. Her prayer was answered, and she bore a son, Samuel, who would become a significant figure in Israel's history.

Similarly, the early church demonstrated reliance on God's providence through prayer. In Acts 4:24-31, the believers, facing persecution, gathered to pray for boldness. They acknowledged God's sovereignty, saying, "Sovereign Lord, who made the heaven and the earth and the sea and everything in them" (Acts 4:24). Their prayer was answered as they were filled with the Holy Spirit and continued to speak the word of God with boldness.

Encouragement for Believers

For contemporary believers, the providence of God remains a vital doctrine that encourages a life of prayerful dependence. In times of uncertainty, suffering, or decision-making, Christians are called to trust in God's perfect plan and to seek His guidance through prayer. The assurance that God is in control provides peace and confidence, enabling believers to face life's challenges with faith and hope.

The providence of God assures the saints that their prayers are not in vain. As they align their hearts with God's will, they can rest in the knowledge that He is working all things together for their good and His glory (Romans 8:28).
