Context
Elijah Denounces Ahaziah
6They replied, “A man came up to meet us and said, ‘Go back to the king who sent you and tell him that this is what the LORD says: Is it because there is no God in Israel that you are sending these men to inquire of Baal-zebub, the god of Ekron? Therefore you will not get up from the bed on which you are lying. You will surely die.’ ” 7The king asked them, “What sort of man came up to meet you and spoke these words to you?” 8“He was a hairy man,” they answered, “with a leather belt around his waist.” “It was Elijah the Tishbite,” said the king.…

The king asked them
In this passage, the king referred to is Ahaziah, the son of Ahab and Jezebel, who reigned over Israel. Ahaziah's reign is marked by idolatry and a departure from the worship of Yahweh, following in the footsteps of his parents. The context of this inquiry is Ahaziah's injury from a fall, leading him to seek counsel from Baal-Zebub, the god of Ekron, rather than the God of Israel. This reflects the spiritual decline of Israel during this period. The king's inquiry demonstrates his concern and curiosity about the identity of the man who intercepted his messengers.

“What sort of man came up to meet you
The phrase "came up to meet you" indicates a deliberate encounter. Elijah, the prophet, is the man who met the king's messengers. Elijah is a significant figure in the Old Testament, known for his boldness in confronting the idolatry of Israel and his role as a prophet of Yahweh. This encounter is a divine intervention, as Elijah is sent by God to deliver a message to Ahaziah. The king's question about the man's appearance suggests that Elijah's distinctive attire and demeanor were recognizable and significant.

and spoke these words to you?”
The words spoken by Elijah were a message of judgment from God, declaring that Ahaziah would not recover from his injuries because he sought guidance from a pagan deity instead of the God of Israel. This highlights the theme of divine retribution and the importance of faithfulness to God. Elijah's role as a prophet is to communicate God's will, often calling the people and their leaders back to covenant faithfulness. This encounter underscores the authority of God's word through His prophets and serves as a warning against idolatry and unfaithfulness.

Teaching Points
The Danger of Idolatry
Ahaziah's decision to seek Baal-Zebub instead of God highlights the spiritual danger of idolatry. Believers are reminded to place their trust in God alone and avoid turning to worldly solutions for spiritual guidance.

The Role of God's Messengers
Elijah's encounter with the messengers underscores the importance of listening to God's prophets and messengers. Today, this can be applied by valuing the teachings of Scripture and those who faithfully communicate God's Word.

God's Sovereignty and Authority
The passage illustrates God's sovereignty over all creation, including false gods. Believers are encouraged to recognize God's ultimate authority in their lives and trust His plans and purposes.

The Importance of Discernment
Ahaziah's failure to discern the truth and seek God serves as a warning to believers to cultivate spiritual discernment through prayer and study of the Scriptures.(7) He said.--Spake. (See Note on 2Kings 1:3.)

What manner of man?--See margin. The word mishpat here denotes the external characteristics and visible peculiarities by which a man is distinguished (sh?phat) from his fellows. (Comp. our expressions "sort," "fashion," "style," and the Vulgate, "Cujus figurae et habitus est vir ille?" LXX., ? ??????. Syriac, "appearance," "look." Targum, ?????.)

Verse 7. - What manner of man was he? literally, what was the manner of the man? What was his appearance? Were there any marks about him by which he might be recognized and known? Ahaziah may have already suspected that the man who had denounced woe on him would be the same who had denounced woe on his father (see 1 Kings 21:20-22).
