Joshua 13

Lands Yet Unconquered
(Judges 1:1–7)

1Now Joshua (YHWH saves) was old and well along in years, and the LORD {YHWH} said to him, “You are old and well along in years, but very much of the land remains to be possessed. 2This is the land that remains:

All the territory (circuit) of the Philistines (immigrants) and the Geshurites, 3from the Shihor (dark) east of Egypt (land of bondage) to the territory of Ekron (torn up by the roots) on the north (considered to be Canaanite territory (merchants))—that of the five Philistine (immigrants) rulers of Gaza, Ashdod (I will spoil), Ashkelon (the fire of infamy), Gath (belonging to Gath), and Ekron, as well as that of the Avvites (ruins);

4to the south, all the land of the Canaanites (merchants), from Mearah (Arah)a of the Sidonians to Aphek (enclosure), as far as the border of the Amorites (sayers);

5the land of the Gebalites (the area of Byblos);b

and all Lebanon (whiteness) to the east, from Baal-gad (lord of fortune) below Mount Hermon (a sanctuary) to Lebo-hamath (fortress).

6All the inhabitants of the hill country from Lebanon (whiteness) to Misrephoth-maim (burnings of water)—all the Sidonians—I Myself will drive out before the Israelites (God prevails). Be sure to divide it by lot as an inheritance to Israel, as I have commanded you. 7Now therefore divide this land as an inheritance to the nine tribes and the half-tribe of Manasseh (causing to forget).”

The Inheritance East of the Jordan
(Numbers 32:1–42; Deuteronomy 3:12–22)

8The other half of Manasseh, along with the Reubenites and Gadites (a troop / fortune), had received the inheritance Moses (drawn out) had given them beyond the Jordan (flowing down) to the east, just as Moses the servant of the LORD {YHWH} had assigned to them:

9The area from Aroer (ruins) on the rim of the Arnon (rushing stream) Valley, along with the city in the middle of the valley, the whole plateau of Medeba (water of rest) as far as Dibon (wasting), 10and all the cities of Sihon (warrior) king of the Amorites (sayers) who reigned in Heshbon (stronghold), as far as the border of the Ammonites (tribal);

11also Gilead (rocky region) and the territory of the Geshurites and Maacathites (she has pressed), all of Mount Hermon (a sanctuary), and all Bashan (fruitful) as far as Salecah (migration)12the whole kingdom of Og (long-necked) in Bashan (fruitful), who had reigned in Ashtaroth (star) and Edrei (good pasture) and had remained as a remnant of the Rephaim.

Moses (drawn out) had struck them down and dispossessed them, 13but the Israelites (God prevails) did not drive out the Geshurites or the Maacathites (she has pressed). So Geshur (proud beholder) and Maacath (oppression) dwell among the Israelites to this day.

14To the tribe of Levi (joined to), however, Moses had given no inheritance. The food offerings to the LORD, the God {YHWH Elohe} of Israel (he wrestles with God), are their inheritance, just as He had promised them.

Reuben’s Inheritance

15This is what Moses (drawn out) had given to the clans of the tribe of Reuben (behold a son):

16The territory from Aroer (ruins) on the rim of the Arnon (rushing stream) Valley, along with the city in the middle of the valley, to the whole plateau beyond Medeba (water of rest), 17to Heshbon (stronghold) and all its cities on the plateau, including Dibon (wasting), Bamoth-baal (high places of Baal), Beth-baal-meon (house of Baal), 18Jahaz (trodden down), Kedemoth (eastern), Mephaath (splendor / height), 19Kiriathaim (two cities), Sibmah (fragrance), Zereth-shahar (splendor of the dawn) on the hill in the valley, 20Beth-peor (house of Peor), the slopes of Pisgah (cleft), and Beth-jeshimoth (house of the desolation)21all the cities of the plateau and all the kingdom of Sihon (warrior) king of the Amorites (sayers), who reigned in Heshbon (stronghold) until Moses (drawn out) killed him and the chiefs of Midian (strife) (Evi (my desire), Rekem (variegation), Zur (rock), Hur (hole), and Reba (four)), the princes of Sihon who lived in the land.

22The Israelites (he wrestles with God) also killed the diviner Balaam (not of the people) son of Beor (burning) along with the others they put to the sword. 23And the border of the Reubenites (behold a son) was the bank of the Jordan (flowing down).

This was the inheritance of the clans of the Reubenites, including the cities and villages.

Gad’s Inheritance

24This is what Moses (drawn out) had given to the clans of the tribe of Gad (troop):

25The territory of Jazer (helped), all the cities of Gilead (rocky region), and half the land of the Ammonites (tribal) as far as Aroer (ruins), near Rabbah (great);

26the territory from Heshbon (stronghold) to Ramath-mizpeh (high place of the watchtower) and Betonim (pistachio nuts), and from Mahanaim (two camps) to the border of Debir [Li-debir];c

27and in the valley, Beth-haram (place of the height), Beth-nimrah (house of the leopard), Succoth (booths), and Zaphon (north), with the rest of the kingdom of Sihon (warrior) king of Heshbon (stronghold) (flowing down) (the territory on the east side of the Jordan up to the edge of the Sea of Chinnereth (the Sea of Galilee)d).

28This was the inheritance of the clans of the Gadites, (troop) including the cities and villages.

Manasseh’s Eastern Inheritance

29This is what Moses (drawn out) had given to the clans of the half-tribe of Manasseh (causing to forget), that is, to half the tribe of the descendants of Manasseh:

30The territory from Mahanaim (two camps) through all Bashan (fruitful)—all the kingdom of Og (long-necked) king of Bashan, including all the towns of Jair (he enlightens) that are in Bashan, sixty cities; 31half of Gilead (rocky region); and Ashtaroth (star) and Edrei (good pasture), the royal cities of Og (long-necked) in Bashan (fruitful).

All this was for the clans of the descendants of Machir (sold) son of Manasseh (causing to forget), that is, half of the descendants of Machir.

32These were the portions Moses (drawn out) had given them on the plains of Moab (of his father) beyond the Jordan (flowing down), east of Jericho (city of palms).

33To the tribe of Levi (joined to), however (drawn out), Moses had given no inheritance. The LORD, the God {YHWH Elohe} of Israel (he wrestles with God), is their inheritance, just as He had promised them.
