Nehemiah 11

Jerusalem’s New Settlers

1Now the leaders of the people settled in Jerusalem (city of peace), and the rest of the people cast lots to bring one out of ten to live in the holy city of Jerusalem, while the remaining nine \nine hands/a were to dwell in their own towns. 2And the people blessed all the men who volunteered to live in Jerusalem (city of peace).

3These are the heads of the provinces who settled in Jerusalem (city of peace). (In the villages of Judah, however (praised), each lived on his own property in their towns—the Israelites (God prevails), priests, Levites, temple servants {Nethinim},b and descendants of Solomon’s (peace) servants— 4while some of the descendants of Judah (praised) and Benjamin (son of the right hand) settled in Jerusalem (city of peace).)

From the descendants of Judah:

Athaiah (YHWH has helped) son of Uzziah (my strength is YHWH), the son of Zechariah (YHWH remembers), the son of Amariah (YHWH has promised), the son of Shephatiah (YHWH has judged), the son of Mahalalel (the blessed of God), a descendant of Perez (breaking out); 5and Maaseiah (work of YHWH) son of Baruch (blessed), the son of Col-hozeh (all-seeing), the son of Hazaiah (God has seen), the son of Adaiah (YHWH has adorned Himself), the son of Joiarib (YHWH contends), the son of Zechariah (YHWH remembers), a descendant of Shelah (of the Shilonite).c 6The descendants of Perez (breaking out) who settled in Jerusalem (city of peace) totaled 468 men of valor.

7From the descendants of Benjamin (son of the right hand):

Sallu (weighed) son of Meshullam (friend), the son of Joed (YHWH is witness), the son of Pedaiah (YHWH has ransomed), the son of Kolaiah (voice of YHWH), the son of Maaseiah (work of YHWH), the son of Ithiel (God is with me), the son of Jeshaiah (YHWH has saved); 8and his followers Gabbai (my back) and Sallai (weighed)—928 men. 9Joel (YHWH is God) son of Zichri (memorable) was the officer over them, and Judah (praised) son of Hassenuah (bristling) was over the Second District of the city (was over the Second Quarter of the city).d

10From the priests:

Jedaiah (YHWH has known) son of Joiarib (Jedaiah; the son of Joiarib;);e Jachin (He will establish); 11Seraiah (YHWH is ruler) son of Hilkiah (my portion is YHWH), the son of Meshullam (friend), the son of Zadok (righteous), the son of Meraioth (rebellious), the son of Ahitub (my brother is goodness), the chief official of the house of God {Elohim}; 12and their associates who did the work at the temple—822 men;

Adaiah (YHWH has adorned Himself) son of Jeroham (showing pity), the son of Pelaliah (YHWH has judged), the son of Amzi (my strength), the son of Zechariah (YHWH remembers), the son of Pashhur (freedom), the son of Malchijah (my king is YHWH); 13and his associates, the leaders of families—242 men;

Amashai (burdensome) son of Azarel (God has helped), the son of Ahzai (my protector), the son of Meshillemoth (recompense), the son of Immer (he has said); 14and his associates [their associates]f —128 mighty men of valor. Zabdiel (God is my endowment) son of Haggedolim was their overseer.

15From the Levites:

Shemaiah (heard by YHWH) son of Hasshub (considerate), the son of Azrikam (help against the enemy), the son of Hashabiah (YHWH has considered), the son of Bunni (built); 16Shabbethai (sabbatical) and Jozabad (YHWH has endowed), two leaders of the Levites, who supervised the work outside the house of God {Elohim}; 17Mattaniah (gift of YHWH) son of Mica (who is like God), the son of Zabdi (endowment), the son of Asaph (gatherer), who led in thanksgiving and prayer; Bakbukiah (wasting of YHWH), second among his associates; and Abda (servant of YHWH) son of Shammua (renowned), the son of Galal (influential), the son of Jeduthun (praising). 18The Levites in the holy city totaled 284.

19And the gatekeepers:

Akkub (insidious), Talmon (oppressor), and their associates, who kept watch at the gates—172 men.

Residents Outside Jerusalem

20The rest of the Israelites (God prevails), with the priests and Levites, were in all the villages of Judah (praised), each on his own inheritance. 21The temple servants lived on the hill of Ophel (hill), with Ziha (parched) and Gishpa (caress) over them.

22Now the overseer of the Levites in Jerusalem (city of peace) was Uzzi (strong) son of Bani (built), the son of Hashabiah (YHWH has considered), the son of Mattaniah (gift of YHWH), the son of Mica (Micaiah).g He was one of Asaph’s (gatherer) descendants, who were the singers in charge of the service of the house of God {Elohim}. 23For there was a command from the king concerning the singers, an ordinance regulating their daily activities. 24Pethahiah (freed by YHWH) son of Meshezabel (God delivers), a descendant of Zerah (rising) son of Judah (praised), was the king’s agent \hand/h in every matter concerning the people.

25As for the villages with their fields, some of the people of Judah (praised) lived in Kiriath-arba (city of Arba), Dibon (wasting), Jekabzeel (God gathers), and their villages; 26in Jeshua (he is saved), Moladah (birth / race), and Beth-pelet (house of escape); 27in Hazar-shual (jackal village); in Beersheba (well of seven) and its villages; 28in Ziklag (winding); in Meconah (foundation) and its villages; 29in En-rimmon (fount of the pomegranate), Zorah (hornet), Jarmuth (heights), 30Zanoah (cast off), Adullam (justice of the people), and their villages; in Lachish (invincible) and its fields; and in Azekah (dug over) and its villages. So they settled from Beersheba (well of seven) all the way to the Valley of Hinnom (lamentation).

31The descendants of Benjamin (son of the right hand) from Geba (hill) lived in Michmash (hidden), Aija (heap of ruins), and Bethel (house of God) with its villages; 32in Anathoth (answers to prayer), Nob (high place), Ananiah (YHWH clouds), 33Hazor (castle), Ramah (hill), Gittaim (two winepresses), 34Hadid (sharp), Zeboim (speckled), Neballat (hidden folly), 35Lod (travail), and Ono (vigorous); and in the Valley of the Craftsmen \in Ge-harashim/.i

36And some divisions of the Levites of Judah (praised) settled in Benjamin (son of the right hand).
