1 וַיִּהְיוּ֙ (And was) The Death and Burial of Sarahחַיֵּ֣י (the lifetime of) שָׂרָ֔ה (Sarah) מֵאָ֥ה (a hundred) שָׁנָ֛ה (years) וְעֶשְׂרִ֥ים (and twenty) שָׁנָ֖ה (years) וְשֶׁ֣בַע (and seven) שָׁנִ֑ים (years), שְׁנֵ֖י (the years) חַיֵּ֥י (of the life) שָׂרָֽה׃ (of Sarah).

2 וַתָּ֣מָת (And died) שָׂרָ֗ה (Sarah) בְּקִרְיַ֥ת (in Kiriath-) אַרְבַּ֛ע (arba) הִ֥וא (that is) חֶבְר֖וֹן (Hebron)) בְּאֶ֣רֶץ (in the land) כְּנָ֑עַן (of Canaan), וַיָּבֹא֙ (and came) אַבְרָהָ֔ם (Abraham) לִסְפֹּ֥ד (to mourn) לְשָׂרָ֖ה (for Sarah) וְלִבְכֹּתָֽהּ׃ (and to weep for her).

3 וַיָּ֙קָם֙ (And rose up) אַבְרָהָ֔ם (Abraham) מֵעַ֖ל (from) פְּנֵ֣י (before) מֵת֑וֹ (his dead one), וַיְדַבֵּ֥ר (and he spoke) אֶל־ (to) בְּנֵי־ (the sons) חֵ֖ת (of Heth), לֵאמֹֽר׃ (saying),

4 גֵּר־ (A sojourner) וְתוֹשָׁ֥ב (and a settler) אָנֹכִ֖י (I am) עִמָּכֶ֑ם (among you⁺). תְּנ֨וּ (Give) לִ֤י (to me) אֲחֻזַּת־ (a possession of) קֶ֙בֶר֙ (a burial place) עִמָּכֶ֔ם (with you⁺), וְאֶקְבְּרָ֥ה (that I may bury) מֵתִ֖י (my dead) מִלְּפָנָֽי׃ (from before me).

5 וַיַּעֲנ֧וּ (And answered) בְנֵי־ (the sons) חֵ֛ת (of Heth) אֶת־ (-) אַבְרָהָ֖ם (Abraham), לֵאמֹ֥ר (saying) לֽוֹ׃ (to him),

6 שְׁמָעֵ֣נוּ׀ (Hear us), אֲדֹנִ֗י (my lord), נְשִׂ֨יא (a prince) אֱלֹהִ֤ים (of God) אַתָּה֙ (You are). בְּתוֹכֵ֔נוּ (In our midst) בְּמִבְחַ֣ר (in the choicest) קְבָרֵ֔ינוּ (of our burial places), קְבֹ֖ר (bury) אֶת־ (-) מֵתֶ֑ךָ (your dead). אִ֣ישׁ (-) מִמֶּ֔נּוּ (of us) אֶת־ (-) קִבְר֛וֹ (his burial place) לֹֽא־ (none) יִכְלֶ֥ה (will withhold) מִמְּךָ֖ (from you), מִקְּבֹ֥ר (from burying) מֵתֶֽךָ׃ (your dead).

7 וַיָּ֧קָם (And rose up) אַבְרָהָ֛ם (Abraham) וַיִּשְׁתַּ֥חוּ (and bowed himself) לְעַם־ (to the people) הָאָ֖רֶץ (of the land), לִבְנֵי־ (the sons) חֵֽת׃ (of Heth).

8 וַיְדַבֵּ֥ר (And he spoke) אִתָּ֖ם (with them) לֵאמֹ֑ר (saying), אִם־ (If) יֵ֣שׁ (it is) אֶֽת־ (-) נַפְשְׁכֶ֗ם (your⁺ desire) לִקְבֹּ֤ר (that I bury) אֶת־ (-) מֵתִי֙ (my dead) מִלְּפָנַ֔י (from before me), שְׁמָע֕וּנִי (hear me) וּפִגְעוּ־ (and intercede) לִ֖י (for me) בְּעֶפְר֥וֹן (with Ephron) בֶּן־ (son) צֹֽחַר׃ (of Zohar),

9 וְיִתֶּן־ (that he may give) לִ֗י (to me) אֶת־ (-) מְעָרַ֤ת (the cave) הַמַּכְפֵּלָה֙ (of Machpelah) אֲשֶׁר־ (which is) ל֔וֹ (his), אֲשֶׁ֖ר (which is) בִּקְצֵ֣ה (at the end) שָׂדֵ֑הוּ (of his field). בְּכֶ֨סֶף (Silver) מָלֵ֜א (for full) יִתְּנֶ֥נָּה (let him give it) לִ֛י (to me) בְּתוֹכְכֶ֖ם (in your⁺ midst) לַאֲחֻזַּת־ (as a possession of) קָֽבֶר׃ (a burial place).

10 וְעֶפְר֥וֹן (And Ephron) יֹשֵׁ֖ב (was sitting) בְּת֣וֹךְ (in the midst of) בְּנֵי־ (the sons) חֵ֑ת (of Heth), וַיַּעַן֩ (and answered) עֶפְר֨וֹן (Ephron) הַחִתִּ֤י (the Hittite) אֶת־ (-) אַבְרָהָם֙ (Abraham) בְּאָזְנֵ֣י (in the ears) בְנֵי־ (of the sons) חֵ֔ת (of Heth), לְכֹ֛ל (of all) בָּאֵ֥י (those entering) שַֽׁעַר־ (at the gate) עִיר֖וֹ (of his city), לֵאמֹֽר׃ (saying),

11 לֹֽא־ (No), אֲדֹנִ֣י (my lord), שְׁמָעֵ֔נִי (hear me). הַשָּׂדֶה֙ (The field) נָתַ֣תִּי (I give) לָ֔ךְ (to you) וְהַמְּעָרָ֥ה (and the cave) אֲשֶׁר־ (that is) בּ֖וֹ (in it), לְךָ֣ (to you) נְתַתִּ֑יהָ (I give it). לְעֵינֵ֧י (Before the eyes) בְנֵי־ (of the sons) עַמִּ֛י (of my people), נְתַתִּ֥יהָ (I give it) לָּ֖ךְ (to you) קְבֹ֥ר (bury) מֵתֶֽךָ׃ (your dead).

12 וַיִּשְׁתַּ֙חוּ֙ (And bowed himself) אַבְרָהָ֔ם (Abraham) לִפְנֵ֖י (before) עַ֥ם (the people) הָאָֽרֶץ׃ (of the land),

13 וַיְדַבֵּ֨ר (and he spoke) אֶל־ (to) עֶפְר֜וֹן (Ephron) בְּאָזְנֵ֤י (in the ears) עַם־ (of the people) הָאָ֙רֶץ֙ (of the land), לֵאמֹ֔ר (saying), אַ֛ךְ (Only) אִם־ (if) אַתָּ֥ה (you) ל֖וּ (please), שְׁמָעֵ֑נִי (hear me). נָתַ֜תִּי (I give) כֶּ֤סֶף (the silver) הַשָּׂדֶה֙ (for the field); קַ֣ח (take it) מִמֶּ֔נִּי (from me), וְאֶקְבְּרָ֥ה (and I will bury) אֶת־ (-) מֵתִ֖י (my dead) שָֽׁמָּה׃ (there).

14 וַיַּ֧עַן (And answered) עֶפְר֛וֹן (Ephron) אֶת־ (-) אַבְרָהָ֖ם (Abraham), לֵאמֹ֥ר (saying) לֽוֹ׃ (to him),

15 אֲדֹנִ֣י (My lord), שְׁמָעֵ֔נִי (hear me). אֶרֶץ֩ (Land worth) אַרְבַּ֨ע (four) מֵאֹ֧ת (hundred) שֶֽׁקֶל־ (shekels) כֶּ֛סֶף (of silver); בֵּינִ֥י (between me) וּבֵֽינְךָ֖ (and between you), מַה־ (what is) הִ֑וא (it)? וְאֶת־ (And) מֵתְךָ֖ (your dead) קְבֹֽר׃ (bury).

16 וַיִּשְׁמַ֣ע (And listened) אַבְרָהָם֮ (Abraham) אֶל־ (to) עֶפְרוֹן֒ (Ephron), וַיִּשְׁקֹ֤ל (and weighed out) אַבְרָהָם֙ (Abraham) לְעֶפְרֹ֔ן (for Ephron) אֶת־ (-) הַכֶּ֕סֶף (the silver) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (that) דִּבֶּ֖ר (he had spoken of) בְּאָזְנֵ֣י (in the ears) בְנֵי־ (of the sons) חֵ֑ת (of Heth): אַרְבַּ֤ע (Four) מֵאוֹת֙ (hundred) שֶׁ֣קֶל (shekels) כֶּ֔סֶף (of silver), עֹבֵ֖ר (passing) לַסֹּחֵֽר׃ (with the merchant).

17 וַיָּ֣קָם׀ (And was established) שְׂדֵ֣ה (the field) עֶפְר֗וֹן (of Ephron) אֲשֶׁר֙ (that was) בַּמַּכְפֵּלָ֔ה (in Machpelah) אֲשֶׁ֖ר (that was) לִפְנֵ֣י (before) מַמְרֵ֑א (Mamre)— הַשָּׂדֶה֙ (the field), וְהַמְּעָרָ֣ה (and the cave) אֲשֶׁר־ (that was) בּ֔וֹ (in it), וְכָל־ (and all) הָעֵץ֙ (the trees) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (that were) בַּשָּׂדֶ֔ה (in the field), אֲשֶׁ֥ר (that were) בְּכָל־ (within all) גְּבֻל֖וֹ (its border) סָבִֽיב׃ (surrounding)—

18 לְאַבְרָהָ֥ם (to Abraham) לְמִקְנָ֖ה (as a possession) לְעֵינֵ֣י (before the eyes) בְנֵי־ (of the sons) חֵ֑ת (of Heth), בְּכֹ֖ל (before all) בָּאֵ֥י (who had come) שַֽׁעַר־ (to the gate) עִירֽוֹ׃ (of his city).

19 וְאַחֲרֵי־ (And) כֵן֩ (after this), קָבַ֨ר (buried) אַבְרָהָ֜ם (Abraham) אֶת־ (-) שָׂרָ֣ה (Sarah) אִשְׁתּ֗וֹ (his wife) אֶל־ (in) מְעָרַ֞ת (the cave) שְׂדֵ֧ה (of the field) הַמַּכְפֵּלָ֛ה (of Machpelah), עַל־ (-) פְּנֵ֥י (before) מַמְרֵ֖א (Mamre) הִ֣וא (that is) חֶבְר֑וֹן (Hebron)) בְּאֶ֖רֶץ (in the land) כְּנָֽעַן׃ (of Canaan).

20 וַיָּ֨קָם (And were established) הַשָּׂדֶ֜ה (the field) וְהַמְּעָרָ֧ה (and the cave) אֲשֶׁר־ (that is) בּ֛וֹ (in it) לְאַבְרָהָ֖ם (to Abraham) לַאֲחֻזַּת־ (as a possession of) קָ֑בֶר (a burial place) מֵאֵ֖ת (from) בְּנֵי־ (the sons) חֵֽת׃ס (of Heth).
