A Wife for Isaac

1 וְאַבְרָהָ֣ם (And Abraham) זָקֵ֔ן (was old), בָּ֖א (advanced) בַּיָּמִ֑ים (in days). וַֽיהוָ֛ה (And YHWH) בֵּרַ֥ךְ (had blessed) אֶת־ (-) אַבְרָהָ֖ם (Abraham) בַּכֹּֽל׃ (in all things).

2 וַיֹּ֣אמֶר (And said) אַבְרָהָ֗ם (Abraham) אֶל־ (to) עַבְדּוֹ֙ (his servant) זְקַ֣ן (elder) בֵּית֔וֹ (of his house), הַמֹּשֵׁ֖ל (the one who is ruling) בְּכָל־ (over all) אֲשֶׁר־ (that) ל֑וֹ (is his), שִֽׂים־ (Put), נָ֥א (please), יָדְךָ֖ (your hand) תַּ֥חַת (under) יְרֵכִֽי׃ (my thigh),

3 וְאַשְׁבִּ֣יעֲךָ֔ (and I will make you swear) בַּֽיהוָה֙ (by YHWH), אֱלֹהֵ֣י (the God) הַשָּׁמַ֔יִם (of the heavens) וֵֽאלֹהֵ֖י (and the God) הָאָ֑רֶץ (of the earth), אֲשֶׁ֨ר (that) לֹֽא־ (not) תִקַּ֤ח (you will take) אִשָּׁה֙ (a wife) לִבְנִ֔י (for my son) מִבְּנוֹת֙ (from the daughters) הַֽכְּנַעֲנִ֔י (of the Canaanite), אֲשֶׁ֥ר (whom) אָנֹכִ֖י (I) יוֹשֵׁ֥ב (am dwelling) בְּקִרְבּֽוֹ׃ (among).

4 כִּ֧י (But) אֶל־ (to) אַרְצִ֛י (my land) וְאֶל־ (and to) מוֹלַדְתִּ֖י (my kindred) תֵּלֵ֑ךְ (you shall go) וְלָקַחְתָּ֥ (and you shall take) אִשָּׁ֖ה (a wife) לִבְנִ֥י (for my son) לְיִצְחָֽק׃ (for Isaac).

5 וַיֹּ֤אמֶר (And said) אֵלָיו֙ (to him) הָעֶ֔בֶד (the servant), אוּלַי֙ (Perhaps) לֹא־ (not) תֹאבֶ֣ה (will be willing) הָֽאִשָּׁ֔ה (the woman) לָלֶ֥כֶת (to follow) אַחֲרַ֖י (after me) אֶל־ (to) הָאָ֣רֶץ (the land) הַזֹּ֑את (this). הֶֽהָשֵׁ֤ב (Returning) אָשִׁיב֙ (shall I cause to return) אֶת־ (-) בִּנְךָ֔ (your son) אֶל־ (to) הָאָ֖רֶץ (the land) אֲשֶׁר־ (which) יָצָ֥אתָ (you came) מִשָּֽׁם׃ (from)?

6 וַיֹּ֥אמֶר (And said) אֵלָ֖יו (to him) אַבְרָהָ֑ם (Abraham), הִשָּׁ֣מֶר (Take heed) לְךָ֔ (to yourself) פֶּן־ (that) תָּשִׁ֥יב (you do not take) אֶת־ (-) בְּנִ֖י (my son) שָֽׁמָּה׃ (there).

7 יְהוָ֣ה׀ (YHWH) אֱלֹהֵ֣י (God) הַשָּׁמַ֗יִם (of the heavens), אֲשֶׁ֨ר (who) לְקָחַ֜נִי (took me) מִבֵּ֣ית (from the house) אָבִי֮ (of my father) וּמֵאֶ֣רֶץ (and from the land) מֽוֹלַדְתִּי֒ (of my kindred), וַאֲשֶׁ֨ר (and who) דִּבֶּר־ (spoke) לִ֜י (to me) וַאֲשֶׁ֤ר (and) נִֽשְׁבַּֽע־ (swore) לִי֙ (to me) לֵאמֹ֔ר (saying), לְזַ֨רְעֲךָ֔ (To your seed) אֶתֵּ֖ן (I will give) אֶת־ (-) הָאָ֣רֶץ (the land) הַזֹּ֑את (this)’— ה֗וּא (He) יִשְׁלַ֤ח (will send) מַלְאָכוֹ֙ (His angel) לְפָנֶ֔יךָ (before you), וְלָקַחְתָּ֥ (and you shall take) אִשָּׁ֛ה (a wife) לִבְנִ֖י (for my son) מִשָּֽׁם׃ (from there).

8 וְאִם־ (And if) לֹ֨א (not) תֹאבֶ֤ה (is willing) הָֽאִשָּׁה֙ (the woman) לָלֶ֣כֶת (to follow) אַחֲרֶ֔יךָ (after you), וְנִקִּ֕יתָ (then you shall be clear) מִשְּׁבֻעָתִ֖י (my oath) זֹ֑את (from this). רַ֣ק (Only) אֶת־ (-) בְּנִ֔י (my son) לֹ֥א (not) תָשֵׁ֖ב (you shall not cause to return) שָֽׁמָּה׃ (there).

9 וַיָּ֤שֶׂם (And put) הָעֶ֙בֶד֙ (the servant) אֶת־ (-) יָד֔וֹ (his hand) תַּ֛חַת (under) יֶ֥רֶךְ (the thigh) אַבְרָהָ֖ם (of Abraham) אֲדֹנָ֑יו (his lord) וַיִּשָּׁ֣בַֽע (and swore) ל֔וֹ (to him) עַל־ (concerning) הַדָּבָ֖ר (the matter) הַזֶּֽה׃ (this).

10 וַיִּקַּ֣ח (And took) הָ֠עֶבֶד (the servant) עֲשָׂרָ֨ה (ten) גְמַלִּ֜ים (camels) מִגְּמַלֵּ֤י (from the camels) אֲדֹנָיו֙ (of his lord), וַיֵּ֔לֶךְ (and he went) וְכָל־ (with all) ט֥וּב (the goods) אֲדֹנָ֖יו (of his lord) בְּיָד֑וֹ (in his hand). וַיָּ֗קָם (And he arose) וַיֵּ֛לֶךְ (and went) אֶל־ (to) אֲרַ֥ם (Aram-) נַֽהֲרַ֖יִם (naharaim), אֶל־ (to) עִ֥יר (the city) נָחֽוֹר׃ (of Nahor).

11 וַיַּבְרֵ֧ךְ (And he made kneel) הַגְּמַלִּ֛ים (the camels) מִח֥וּץ (outside) לָעִ֖יר (of the city) אֶל־ (by) בְּאֵ֣ר (the well) הַמָּ֑יִם (of water) לְעֵ֣ת (at the time) עֶ֔רֶב (of the evening), לְעֵ֖ת (the time) צֵ֥את (of the coming out) הַשֹּׁאֲבֹֽת׃ (of the women who draw water).

12 וַיֹּאמַ֓ר׀ (And he said), יְהוָ֗ה (YHWH) אֱלֹהֵי֙ (God) אֲדֹנִ֣י (of my lord) אַבְרָהָ֔ם (Abraham), הַקְרֵה־ (cause it to happen), נָ֥א (please), לְפָנַ֖י (before me) הַיּ֑וֹם (today), וַעֲשֵׂה־ (and do) חֶ֕סֶד (kindness) עִ֖ם (to) אֲדֹנִ֥י (my lord) אַבְרָהָֽם׃ (Abraham).

13 הִנֵּ֛ה (Behold), אָנֹכִ֥י (I) נִצָּ֖ב (am standing) עַל־ (by) עֵ֣ין (the spring) הַמָּ֑יִם (of water), וּבְנוֹת֙ (and the daughters) אַנְשֵׁ֣י (of the men) הָעִ֔יר (of the city) יֹצְאֹ֖ת (are coming out) לִשְׁאֹ֥ב (to draw) מָֽיִם׃ (water).

14 וְהָיָ֣ה (And it shall be), הַֽנַּעֲרָ֗ (that the young woman) אֲשֶׁ֨ר (whom) אֹמַ֤ר (I say) אֵלֶ֙יהָ֙ (to), הַטִּי־ (Let down) נָ֤א (please) כַדֵּךְ֙ (your jar), וְאֶשְׁתֶּ֔ה (and I will drink), וְאָמְרָ֣ה (and she says), שְׁתֵ֔ה (Drink), וְגַם־ (and also) גְּמַלֶּ֖יךָ (your camels) אַשְׁקֶ֑ה (I will water), אֹתָ֤הּ (she is the one) הֹכַ֙חְתָּ֙ (You have appointed) לְעַבְדְּךָ֣ (for Your servant) לְיִצְחָ֔ק (Isaac), וּבָ֣הּ (and by this) אֵדַ֔ע (I will know) כִּי־ (that) עָשִׂ֥יתָ (You have done) חֶ֖סֶד (kindness) עִם־ (to) אֲדֹנִֽי׃ (my lord).

Rebekah Is Chosen

15 וַֽיְהִי־ (And it came to pass), ה֗וּא (he) טֶרֶם֮ (before) כִּלָּ֣ה (had finished) לְדַבֵּר֒ (speaking), וְהִנֵּ֧ה (that behold), רִבְקָ֣ה (Rebekah) יֹצֵ֗את (was coming out), אֲשֶׁ֤ר (who) יֻלְּדָה֙ (was born) לִבְתוּאֵ֣ל (to Bethuel) בֶּן־ (son) מִלְכָּ֔ה (of Milcah), אֵ֥שֶׁת (the wife) נָח֖וֹר (of Nahor), אֲחִ֣י (the brother) אַבְרָהָ֑ם (of Abraham)— וְכַדָּ֖הּ (and her jar was) עַל־ (on) שִׁכְמָֽהּ׃ (her shoulder).

16 וְהַֽנַּעֲרָ֗ (And the young woman was) טֹבַ֤ת (beautiful) מַרְאֶה֙ (of appearance) מְאֹ֔ד (very), בְּתוּלָ֕ה (a virgin). וְאִ֖ישׁ (And a man) לֹ֣א (not) יְדָעָ֑הּ (had known her), וַתֵּ֣רֶד (and she went down) הָעַ֔יְנָה (to the spring), וַתְּמַלֵּ֥א (and filled) כַדָּ֖הּ (her jar), וַתָּֽעַל׃ (and came up).

17 וַיָּ֥רָץ (And ran) הָעֶ֖בֶד (the servant) לִקְרָאתָ֑הּ (to meet her), וַיֹּ֕אמֶר (and said), הַגְמִיאִ֥ינִי (Let me drink) נָ֛א (please) מְעַט־ (a little) מַ֖יִם (water) מִכַּדֵּֽךְ׃ (from your jar).

18 וַתֹּ֖אמֶר (And she said), שְׁתֵ֣ה (Drink), אֲדֹנִ֑י (my lord). וַתְּמַהֵ֗ר (And she hurried) וַתֹּ֧רֶד (and lowered) כַּדָּ֛הּ (her jar) עַל־ (upon) יָדָ֖הּ (her hand) וַתַּשְׁקֵֽהוּ׃ (and gave him a drink).

19 וַתְּכַ֖ל (And she finished) לְהַשְׁקֹת֑וֹ (giving him a drink), וַתֹּ֗אמֶר (and she said), גַּ֤ם (Also) לִגְמַלֶּ֙יךָ֙ (for your camels) אֶשְׁאָ֔ב (I will draw) עַ֥ד (until) אִם־ (…) כִּלּ֖וּ (they have finished) לִשְׁתֹּֽת׃ (drinking).

20 וַתְּמַהֵ֗ר (And she hurried) וַתְּעַ֤ר (and she emptied) כַּדָּהּ֙ (her jar) אֶל־ (into) הַשֹּׁ֔קֶת (the trough), וַתָּ֥רָץ (and she ran) ע֛וֹד (again) אֶֽל־ (to) הַבְּאֵ֖ר (the well) לִשְׁאֹ֑ב (to draw), וַתִּשְׁאַ֖ב (and she drew) לְכָל־ (for all) גְּמַלָּֽיו׃ (his camels).

21 וְהָאִ֥ישׁ (And the man) מִשְׁתָּאֵ֖ה (gazed) לָ֑הּ (at her) מַחֲרִ֕ישׁ (remaining silent), לָדַ֗עַת (to know) הַֽהִצְלִ֧יחַ (whether had made prosperous) יְהוָ֛ה (YHWH) דַּרְכּ֖וֹ (his way) אִם־ (or) לֹֽא׃ (not).

22 וַיְהִ֗י (And it came to pass), כַּאֲשֶׁ֨ר (when) כִּלּ֤וּ (had finished) הַגְּמַלִּים֙ (the camels) לִשְׁתּ֔וֹת (drinking), וַיִּקַּ֤ח (that took) הָאִישׁ֙ (the man) נֶ֣זֶם (a ring) זָהָ֔ב (golden) בֶּ֖קַע (a beka) מִשְׁקָל֑וֹ (its weight), וּשְׁנֵ֤י (and two) צְמִידִים֙ (bracelets) עַל־ (for) יָדֶ֔יהָ (her hands) עֲשָׂרָ֥ה (ten shekels) זָהָ֖ב (of gold) מִשְׁקָלָֽם׃ (their weight).

23 וַיֹּ֙אמֶר֙ (And he said), בַּת־ (Daughter) מִ֣י (whose) אַ֔תְּ (are you)? הַגִּ֥ידִי (Tell) נָ֖א (please) לִ֑י (me), הֲיֵ֧שׁ (is there) בֵּית־ (in the house) אָבִ֛יךְ (of your father) מָק֥וֹם (a place) לָ֖נוּ (for us) לָלִֽין׃ (to lodge)?

24 וַתֹּ֣אמֶר (And she said) אֵלָ֔יו (to him), בַּת־ (The daughter) בְּתוּאֵ֖ל (of Bethuel) אָנֹ֑כִי (I am), בֶּן־ (son) מִלְכָּ֕ה (of Milcah), אֲשֶׁ֥ר (whom) יָלְדָ֖ה (she bore) לְנָחֽוֹר׃ (to Nahor).

25 וַתֹּ֣אמֶר (And she said) אֵלָ֔יו (to him), גַּם־ (Both) תֶּ֥בֶן (straw) גַּם־ (and) מִסְפּ֖וֹא (feed) רַ֣ב (are abundant) עִמָּ֑נוּ (with us), גַּם־ (and also) מָק֖וֹם (a place) לָלֽוּן׃ (to lodge).

26 וַיִּקֹּ֣ד (And bowed his head) הָאִ֔ישׁ (the man), וַיִּשְׁתַּ֖חוּ (and worshiped) לַֽיהוָֽה׃ (to YHWH).

27 וַיֹּ֗אמֶר (And he said), בָּר֤וּךְ (Blessed be) יְהוָה֙ (YHWH) אֱלֹהֵי֙ (God) אֲדֹנִ֣י (of my lord) אַבְרָהָ֔ם (Abraham), אֲ֠שֶׁר (who) לֹֽא־ (not) עָזַ֥ב (has forsaken) חַסְדּ֛וֹ (His kindness) וַאֲמִתּ֖וֹ (and His truth) מֵעִ֣ם (toward) אֲדֹנִ֑י (my lord). אָנֹכִ֗י (I) בַּדֶּ֙רֶךְ֙ (being on the way), נָחַ֣נִי (has led me) יְהוָ֔ה (YHWH) בֵּ֖ית (to the house) אֲחֵ֥י (of the brother) אֲדֹנִֽי׃ (of my lord).

28 וַתָּ֙רָץ֙ (And ran) הַֽנַּעֲרָ֔ (the young woman) וַתַּגֵּ֖ד (and told) לְבֵ֣ית (to the house) אִמָּ֑הּ (of her mother) כַּדְּבָרִ֖ים (the words) הָאֵֽלֶּה׃ (these).

29 וּלְרִבְקָ֥ה (And Rebekah had) אָ֖ח (a brother) וּשְׁמ֣וֹ (and his name was) לָבָ֑ן (Laban), וַיָּ֨רָץ (and ran) לָבָ֧ן (Laban) אֶל־ (to) הָאִ֛ישׁ (the man), הַח֖וּצָה (out) אֶל־ (to) הָעָֽיִן׃ (the spring).

30 וַיְהִ֣י׀ (And it came to pass) כִּרְאֹ֣ת (when he saw) אֶת־ (-) הַנֶּ֗זֶם (the ring) וְֽאֶת־ (and) הַצְּמִדִים֮ (the bracelets) עַל־ (on) יְדֵ֣י (the hands) אֲחֹתוֹ֒ (of his sister), וּכְשָׁמְע֗וֹ (and when he heard) אֶת־ (-) דִּבְרֵ֞י (the words) רִבְקָ֤ה (of Rebekah) אֲחֹתוֹ֙ (his sister), לֵאמֹ֔ר (saying), כֹּֽה־ (Thus) דִבֶּ֥ר (spoke) אֵלַ֖י (to me) הָאִ֑ישׁ (the man). וַיָּבֹא֙ (Then he went) אֶל־ (to) הָאִ֔ישׁ (the man), וְהִנֵּ֛ה (and behold), עֹמֵ֥ד (he was standing) עַל־ (by) הַגְּמַלִּ֖ים (the camels) עַל־ (at) הָעָֽיִן׃ (the spring).

31 וַיֹּ֕אמֶר (And he said), בּ֖וֹא (Come in), בְּר֣וּךְ (blessed) יְהוָ֑ה (of YHWH). לָ֤מָּה (Why) תַעֲמֹד֙ (do you stand) בַּח֔וּץ (outside)? וְאָנֹכִי֙ (And I) פִּנִּ֣יתִי (have cleared) הַבַּ֔יִת (the house) וּמָק֖וֹם (and a place) לַגְּמַלִּֽים׃ (for the camels).

32 וַיָּבֹ֤א (And came) הָאִישׁ֙ (the man) הַבַּ֔יְתָה (into the house), וַיְפַתַּ֖ח (and he loosened) הַגְּמַלִּ֑ים (the camels) וַיִּתֵּ֨ן (and he gave) תֶּ֤בֶן (straw) וּמִסְפּוֹא֙ (and feed) לַגְּמַלִּ֔ים (for the camels) וּמַ֙יִם֙ (and water) לִרְחֹ֣ץ (to wash) רַגְלָ֔יו (his feet) וְרַגְלֵ֥י (and the feet) הָאֲנָשִׁ֖ים (of the men) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (who were) אִתּֽוֹ׃ (with him).

33 וַיִּישֶׂם (And food was set) לְפָנָיו֙ (before him) לֶאֱכֹ֔ל (to eat). וַיֹּ֙אמֶר֙ (And he said), לֹ֣א (Not) אֹכַ֔ל (I will eat) עַ֥ד (until) אִם־ (that) דִּבַּ֖רְתִּי (I have spoken) דְּבָרָ֑י (my words). וַיֹּ֖אמֶר (And he said), דַּבֵּֽר׃ (Speak).

34 וַיֹּאמַ֑ר (And he said), עֶ֥בֶד (Servant) אַבְרָהָ֖ם (Abraham’s) אָנֹֽכִי׃ (I am).

35 וַיהוָ֞ה (And YHWH) בֵּרַ֧ךְ (has blessed) אֶת־ (-) אֲדֹנִ֛י (my lord) מְאֹ֖ד (greatly), וַיִּגְדָּ֑ל (and he has become great). וַיִּתֶּן־ (And He has given) ל֞וֹ (to him) צֹ֤אן (flock), וּבָקָר֙ (and cattle), וְכֶ֣סֶף (and silver), וְזָהָ֔ב (and gold), וַעֲבָדִם֙ (and menservants), וּשְׁפָחֹ֔ת (and maidservants), וּגְמַלִּ֖ים (and camels), וַחֲמֹרִֽים׃ (and donkeys).

36 וַתֵּ֡לֶד (And bore) שָׂרָה֩ (Sarah) אֵ֨שֶׁת (wife) אֲדֹנִ֥י (of my lord) בֵן֙ (a son) לַֽאדֹנִ֔י (to my lord) אַחֲרֵ֖י (after) זִקְנָתָ֑הּ (her old age), וַיִּתֶּן־ (and he has given) לּ֖וֹ (to him) אֶת־ (-) כָּל־ (all) אֲשֶׁר־ (that) לֽוֹ׃ (is his).

37 וַיַּשְׁבִּעֵ֥נִי (And made me swear) אֲדֹנִ֖י (my lord), לֵאמֹ֑ר (saying), לֹא־ (Not) תִקַּ֤ח (you shall take) אִשָּׁה֙ (a wife) לִבְנִ֔י (for my son) מִבְּנוֹת֙ (from the daughters) הַֽכְּנַעֲנִ֔י (of the Canaanite), אֲשֶׁ֥ר (whose) אָנֹכִ֖י (I) יֹשֵׁ֥ב (am dwelling) בְּאַרְצֽוֹ׃ (in land).

38 אִם־ (But) לֹ֧א (rather) אֶל־ (to) בֵּית־ (the house) אָבִ֛י (of my father) תֵּלֵ֖ךְ (you shall go), וְאֶל־ (and to) מִשְׁפַּחְתִּ֑י (my kindred), וְלָקַחְתָּ֥ (and you shall take) אִשָּׁ֖ה (a wife) לִבְנִֽי׃ (for my son).

39 וָאֹמַ֖ר (And I said) אֶל־ (to) אֲדֹנִ֑י (my lord), אֻלַ֛י (Perhaps) לֹא־ (not) תֵלֵ֥ךְ (will follow) הָאִשָּׁ֖ה (the woman) אַחֲרָֽי׃ (me).

40 וַיֹּ֖אמֶר (And he said) אֵלָ֑י (to me), יְהוָ֞ה (YHWH), אֲשֶׁר־ (whom) הִתְהַלַּ֣כְתִּי (I walk) לְפָנָ֗יו (before), יִשְׁלַ֨ח (will send) מַלְאָכ֤וֹ (His angel) אִתָּךְ֙ (with you) וְהִצְלִ֣יחַ (and will prosper) דַּרְכֶּ֔ךָ (your way), וְלָקַחְתָּ֤ (and you shall take) אִשָּׁה֙ (a wife) לִבְנִ֔י (for my son) מִמִּשְׁפַּחְתִּ֖י (from my kindred) וּמִבֵּ֥ית (and from the house) אָבִֽי׃ (of my father).

41 אָ֤ז (Then) תִּנָּקֶה֙ (you will be clear) מֵאָ֣לָתִ֔י (from my oath), כִּ֥י (when) תָב֖וֹא (you come) אֶל־ (to) מִשְׁפַּחְתִּ֑י (my kindred); וְאִם־ (and if) לֹ֤א (not) יִתְּנוּ֙ (they do give her) לָ֔ךְ (to you), וְהָיִ֥יתָ (then you will be) נָקִ֖י (released) מֵאָלָתִֽי׃ (from my oath).

42 וָאָבֹ֥א (And I came) הַיּ֖וֹם (today) אֶל־ (to) הָעָ֑יִן (the spring), וָאֹמַ֗ר (and I said): יְהוָה֙ (YHWH) אֱלֹהֵי֙ (God) אֲדֹנִ֣י (of my lord) אַבְרָהָ֔ם (Abraham), אִם־ (if) יֶשְׁךָ־ (You) נָּא֙ (now) מַצְלִ֣יחַ (will prosper) דַּרְכִּ֔י (the way) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (which) אָנֹכִ֖י (I) הֹלֵ֥ךְ (am going) עָלֶֽיהָ׃ (on).

43 הִנֵּ֛ה (Behold), אָנֹכִ֥י (I) נִצָּ֖ב (am standing) עַל־ (by) עֵ֣ין (the spring) הַמָּ֑יִם (of water). וְהָיָ֤ה (And let it be that) הָֽעַלְמָה֙ (the virgin) הַיֹּצֵ֣את (who comes out) לִשְׁאֹ֔ב (to draw water), וְאָמַרְתִּ֣י (and I say) אֵלֶ֔יהָ (to her), הַשְׁקִֽינִי־ (Give me to drink), נָ֥א (please), מְעַט־ (a little) מַ֖יִם (water) מִכַּדֵּֽךְ׃ (from your jar).

44 וְאָמְרָ֤ה (And she says) אֵלַי֙ (to me), גַּם־ (And) אַתָּ֣ה (for you) שְׁתֵ֔ה (drink), וְגַ֥ם (and also) לִגְמַלֶּ֖יךָ (for your camels) אֶשְׁאָ֑ב (I will draw), הִ֣וא (she is) הָֽאִשָּׁ֔ה (the woman) אֲשֶׁר־ (whom) הֹכִ֥יחַ (has appointed) יְהוָ֖ה (YHWH) לְבֶן־ (for the son) אֲדֹנִֽי׃ (of my lord).

45 אֲנִי֩ (I) טֶ֨רֶם (before) אֲכַלֶּ֜ה (had finished) לְדַבֵּ֣ר (speaking) אֶל־ (in) לִבִּ֗י (my heart), וְהִנֵּ֨ה (and behold), רִבְקָ֤ה (Rebekah) יֹצֵאת֙ (was coming out), וְכַדָּ֣הּ (and her jar) עַל־ (was on) שִׁכְמָ֔הּ (her shoulder), וַתֵּ֥רֶד (and she went down) הָעַ֖יְנָה (to the spring) וַתִּשְׁאָ֑ב (and drew), וָאֹמַ֥ר (and I said) אֵלֶ֖יהָ (to her), הַשְׁקִ֥ינִי (Give me a drink), נָֽא׃ (please).

46 וַתְּמַהֵ֗ר (And she hurried) וַתּ֤וֹרֶד (and lowered) כַּדָּהּ֙ (her jar) מֵֽעָלֶ֔יהָ (from herself) וַתֹּ֣אמֶר (and said), שְׁתֵ֔ה (Drink), וְגַם־ (and also) גְּמַלֶּ֖יךָ (your camels) אַשְׁקֶ֑ה (I will give drink). וָאֵ֕שְׁתְּ (And I drank), וְגַ֥ם (and also) הַגְּמַלִּ֖ים (the camels) הִשְׁקָֽתָה׃ (she gave a drink).

47 וָאֶשְׁאַ֣ל (And I asked) אֹתָ֗הּ (her) וָאֹמַר֮ (and said), בַּת־ (Daughter) מִ֣י (whose) אַתְּ֒ (are you)? וַתֹּ֗אמֶר (And she said), בַּת־ (The daughter) בְּתוּאֵל֙ (of Bethuel) בֶּן־ (son) נָח֔וֹר (of Nahor), אֲשֶׁ֥ר (whom) יָֽלְדָה־ (bore) לּ֖וֹ (to him) מִלְכָּ֑ה (Milcah). וָאָשִׂ֤ם (And I put) הַנֶּ֙זֶם֙ (the ring) עַל־ (on) אַפָּ֔הּ (her nose), וְהַצְּמִידִ֖ים (and the bracelets) עַל־ (on) יָדֶֽיהָ׃ (her hands).

48 וָאֶקֹּ֥ד (And I bowed my head), וָֽאֶשְׁתַּחֲוֶ֖ה (and worshiped) לַיהוָ֑ה (to YHWH), וָאֲבָרֵ֗ךְ (and I blessed) אֶת־ (-) יְהוָה֙ (YHWH) אֱלֹהֵי֙ (God) אֲדֹנִ֣י (of my lord) אַבְרָהָ֔ם (Abraham), אֲשֶׁ֤ר (who) הִנְחַ֙נִי֙ (led me) בְּדֶ֣רֶךְ (in the way) אֱמֶ֔ת (of truth), לָקַ֛חַת (to take) אֶת־ (-) בַּת־ (the daughter) אֲחִ֥י (of the brother) אֲדֹנִ֖י (of my lord) לִבְנֽוֹ׃ (for his son).

49 וְ֠עַתָּה (And now) אִם־ (if) יֶשְׁכֶ֨ם (you⁺ are) עֹשִׂ֜ים (doing) חֶ֧סֶד (kindness) וֶֽאֱמֶ֛ת (and truth) אֶת־ (with) אֲדֹנִ֖י (my lord), הַגִּ֣ידוּ (tell) לִ֑י (me), וְאִם־ (and if) לֹ֕א (not), הַגִּ֣ידוּ (tell) לִ֔י (me), וְאֶפְנֶ֥ה (that I may turn) עַל־ (to) יָמִ֖ין (the right) א֥וֹ (or) עַל־ (to) שְׂמֹֽאל׃ (the left).

50 וַיַּ֨עַן (And answered) לָבָ֤ן (Laban) וּבְתוּאֵל֙ (and Bethuel), וַיֹּ֣אמְר֔וּ (and they said), מֵיְהוָ֖ה (From YHWH) יָצָ֣א (has gone out) הַדָּבָ֑ר (the matter); לֹ֥א (not) נוּכַ֛ל (we are able) דַּבֵּ֥ר (to speak) אֵלֶ֖יךָ (to you) רַ֥ע (evil) אוֹ־ (or) טֽוֹב׃ (good).

51 הִנֵּֽה־ (Behold) רִבְקָ֥ה (Rebekah) לְפָנֶ֖יךָ (is before you); קַ֣ח (take her) וָלֵ֑ךְ (and go), וּתְהִ֤י (and let her be) אִשָּׁה֙ (wife) לְבֶן־ (to the son) אֲדֹנֶ֔יךָ (of your lord), כַּאֲשֶׁ֖ר (as) דִּבֶּ֥ר (has spoken) יְהוָֽה׃ (YHWH).

52 וַיְהִ֕י (And it came to pass), כַּאֲשֶׁ֥ר (when) שָׁמַ֛ע (heard) עֶ֥בֶד (the servant) אַבְרָהָ֖ם (of Abraham) אֶת־ (-) דִּבְרֵיהֶ֑ם (their words), וַיִּשְׁתַּ֥חוּ (that bowed himself) אַ֖רְצָה (to the earth) לַֽיהוָֽה׃ (before YHWH).

53 וַיּוֹצֵ֨א (And brought out) הָעֶ֜בֶד (the servant) כְּלֵי־ (articles) כֶ֨סֶף (of silver), וּכְלֵ֤י (and articles) זָהָב֙ (of gold), וּבְגָדִ֔ים (and clothing), וַיִּתֵּ֖ן (and he gave them) לְרִבְקָ֑ה (to Rebekah). וּמִ֨גְדָּנֹ֔ת (And precious things) נָתַ֥ן (he gave) לְאָחִ֖יהָ (to her brother) וּלְאִמָּֽהּ׃ (and to her mother).

54 וַיֹּאכְל֣וּ (And they ate) וַיִּשְׁתּ֗וּ (and they drank) ה֛וּא (he) וְהָאֲנָשִׁ֥ים (and the men) אֲשֶׁר־ (who were) עִמּ֖וֹ (with him), וַיָּלִ֑ינוּ (and they spent the night there). וַיָּק֣וּמוּ (And they arose) בַבֹּ֔קֶר (in the morning), וַיֹּ֖אמֶר (and he said), שַׁלְּחֻ֥נִי (Send me away) לַֽאדֹנִֽי׃ (to my lord).

55 וַיֹּ֤אמֶר (And said) אָחִ֙יהָ֙ (her brother) וְאִמָּ֔הּ (and her mother), תֵּשֵׁ֨ב (Let stay) הַנַּעֲרָ֥ (the young woman) אִתָּ֛נוּ (with us) יָמִ֖ים (a few days), א֣וֹ (or) עָשׂ֑וֹר (ten days). אַחַ֖ר (Afterward) תֵּלֵֽךְ׃ (she may go).

56 וַיֹּ֤אמֶר (And he said) אֲלֵהֶם֙ (to them), אַל־ (Not) תְּאַחֲר֣וּ (do delay) אֹתִ֔י (me), וַֽיהוָ֖ה (and since YHWH) הִצְלִ֣יחַ (has prospered) דַּרְכִּ֑י (my way); שַׁלְּח֕וּנִי (send me away) וְאֵלְכָ֖ה (so that I may go) לַֽאדֹנִֽי׃ (to my lord).

57 וַיֹּאמְר֖וּ (And they said), נִקְרָ֣א (We will call) לַֽנַּעֲרָ֑ (for the young woman) וְנִשְׁאֲלָ֖ה (and let us ask) אֶת־ (at her) פִּֽיהָ׃ (mouth).

58 וַיִּקְרְא֤וּ (And they called) לְרִבְקָה֙ (for Rebekah) וַיֹּאמְר֣וּ (and said) אֵלֶ֔יהָ (to her), הֲתֵלְכִ֖י (Will you go) עִם־ (with) הָאִ֣ישׁ (the man) הַזֶּ֑ה (this)? וַתֹּ֖אמֶר (And she said), אֵלֵֽךְ׃ (I will go).

59 וַֽיְשַׁלְּח֛וּ (And they sent away) אֶת־ (-) רִבְקָ֥ה (Rebekah) אֲחֹתָ֖ם (their sister) וְאֶת־ (and) מֵנִקְתָּ֑הּ (her nurse), וְאֶת־ (and) עֶ֥בֶד (the servant) אַבְרָהָ֖ם (of Abraham) וְאֶת־ (and) אֲנָשָֽׁיו׃ (his men).

60 וַיְבָרֲכ֤וּ (And they blessed) אֶת־ (-) רִבְקָה֙ (Rebekah), וַיֹּ֣אמְרוּ (and said) לָ֔הּ (to her) אֲחֹתֵ֕נוּ (Our sister), אַ֥תְּ (you) הֲיִ֖י (may become the mother) לְאַלְפֵ֣י (of thousands) רְבָבָ֑ה (of myriads), וְיִירַ֣שׁ (and may possess) זַרְעֵ֔ךְ (your seed) אֵ֖ת (-) שַׁ֥עַר (the gate) שֹׂנְאָֽיו׃ (of those who hate him).

61 וַתָּ֨קָם (And arose) רִבְקָ֜ה (Rebekah) וְנַעֲרֹתֶ֗יהָ (and her young women), וַתִּרְכַּ֙בְנָה֙ (and they rode) עַל־ (on) הַגְּמַלִּ֔ים (the camels) וַתֵּלַ֖כְנָה (and) אַחֲרֵ֣י (followed) הָאִ֑ישׁ (the man). וַיִּקַּ֥ח (And took) הָעֶ֛בֶד (the servant) אֶת־ (-) רִבְקָ֖ה (Rebekah) וַיֵּלַֽךְ׃ (and departed).

Isaac Marries Rebekah

62 וְיִצְחָק֙ (And Isaac) בָּ֣א (had come in) מִבּ֔וֹא (from the entrance) בְּאֵ֥ר (to Beer-) לַחַ֖י (lahai-) רֹאִ֑י (roi), וְה֥וּא (and he) יוֹשֵׁ֖ב (was dwelling) בְּאֶ֥רֶץ (in) הַנֶּֽגֶב׃ (the Negev).

63 וַיֵּצֵ֥א (And went out) יִצְחָ֛ק (Isaac) לָשׂ֥וּחַ (to meditate) בַּשָּׂדֶ֖ה (in the field) לִפְנ֣וֹת (in) עָ֑רֶב (the evening). וַיִּשָּׂ֤א (And he lifted up) עֵינָיו֙ (his eyes) וַיַּ֔רְא (and saw), וְהִנֵּ֥ה (and behold), גְמַלִּ֖ים (camels) בָּאִֽים׃ (were coming).

64 וַתִּשָּׂ֤א (And lifted up) רִבְקָה֙ (Rebekah) אֶת־ (-) עֵינֶ֔יהָ (her eyes), וַתֵּ֖רֶא (and she saw) אֶת־ (-) יִצְחָ֑ק (Isaac), וַתִּפֹּ֖ל (and she fell) מֵעַ֥ל (from upon) הַגָּמָֽל׃ (the camel).

65 וַתֹּ֣אמֶר (And she said) אֶל־ (to) הָעֶ֗בֶד (the servant), מִֽי־ (Who is) הָאִ֤ישׁ (the man) הַלָּזֶה֙ (this) הַהֹלֵ֤ךְ (the one walking) בַּשָּׂדֶה֙ (in the field) לִקְרָאתֵ֔נוּ (to meet us)? וַיֹּ֥אמֶר (And said) הָעֶ֖בֶד (the servant), ה֣וּא (He is) אֲדֹנִ֑י (my lord). וַתִּקַּ֥ח (And she took) הַצָּעִ֖יף (the veil) וַתִּתְכָּֽס׃ (and covered herself).

66 וַיְסַפֵּ֥ר (And told) הָעֶ֖בֶד (the servant) לְיִצְחָ֑ק (Isaac) אֵ֥ת (-) כָּל־ (all) הַדְּבָרִ֖ים (the things) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (that) עָשָֽׂה׃ (he had done).

67 וַיְבִאֶ֣הָ (And brought her) יִצְחָ֗ק (Isaac) הָאֹ֙הֱלָה֙ (into the tent) שָׂרָ֣ה (of Sarah) אִמּ֔וֹ (his mother), וַיִּקַּ֧ח (and he took) אֶת־ (-) רִבְקָ֛ה (Rebekah), וַתְּהִי־ (and she became) ל֥וֹ (his) לְאִשָּׁ֖ה (wife). וַיֶּאֱהָבֶ֑הָ (And he loved her), וַיִּנָּחֵ֥ם (and was comforted) יִצְחָ֖ק (Isaac) אַחֲרֵ֥י (after) אִמּֽוֹ׃פ (his mother’s death).
