Mary Anoints Jesus 1Therefore Jesus, six days before the Passover, came to Bethany where Lazarus† was, whom Jesus raised out from the dead. 2Therefore they made Him a supper there, and Martha was serving, and Lazarus was one of those reclining with Him. 3Therefore Mary, having taken a litra† of fragrant oil of pure nard, of great price, anointed the feet of Jesus and wiped His feet with her hair; and the house was filled with the fragrance of the oil. 4But Judas Iscariot,† one of His disciples, being about to betray Him, says, 5“Why was this fragrant oil not sold for three hundred denarii† and given to the poor?” 6But he said this not because he was caring for the poor, but because he was a thief; and having the money bag, he used to take up that being put into it. 7Therefore Jesus said, “Leave her alone, so that for the day of My burial she may keep it. 8For you⁺ always have the poor with you,† but not always do you⁺ have Me.” The Plot to Kill Lazarus 9Therefore the great crowd† of the Jews knew that He is there; and they came, not because of Jesus only, but so that they might see Lazarus also, whom He raised out from the dead. 10But the chief priests took counsel that they might kill Lazarus also, 11because on account of him many of the Jews were going away and were believing in Jesus. The Triumphal Entry 12On the next day the large crowd† having come to the feast, having heard that Jesus is coming into Jerusalem, 13took the branches of the palm trees and went out to meet Him, and they were shouting:† “Hosanna!”† “Blessed is the One coming in the name of the Lord!”† 14Now Jesus, having found a young donkey, sat on it, just as it is written: 15“Do not fear, daughter of Zion; behold, your King comes, sitting on a colt of a donkey.”† 16His disciples did not know these things from the first, but when Jesus was glorified, then they remembered that these things were written of Him and these things they did to Him. 17Therefore the crowd being with Him when He called Lazarus out of the tomb and raised him out from the dead were testifying. 18Because of this also the crowd met Him, because they heard of His having done this sign. 19Therefore the Pharisees said among themselves, “You⁺ see that you⁺ gain nothing. Behold, the world went away after Him!” Jesus Predicts His Death 20Now there were certain Greeks among those coming up so that they might worship at the feast. 21Therefore these came to Philip, who was from Bethsaida of Galilee, and they were asking him, saying, “Sir, we want to see Jesus.” 22Philip comes and tells Andrew; Andrew and Philip come and tell Jesus. 23And Jesus answered them, saying, “The hour has come that Son of Man should be glorified.
24Truly, truly, I say to you⁺, unless the grain of wheat, having fallen into the ground, should die, it remains alone; but if it should die, it bears much fruit.
25The one loving his life loses it, and the one hating his life in this world will keep it to eternal life.
26If anyone may serve Me, let him follow Me; and where I am, there also My servant will be. If anyone may serve Me, the Father will honor him.
27Now My soul has been troubled, and what shall I say? ‘Father, save Me from this hour’? But because of this I came to this hour.
28Father, glorify Your name!” Therefore a voice came from heaven: “I both glorified it, and I will glorify it again.” 29Therefore the crowd, having stood and having heard, was saying, “There has been thunder.” Others were saying, “An angel has spoken to Him.” 30Jesus answered and said, “This voice has not come because of Me, but because of you⁺. 31Now is the judgment of this world; now the ruler of this world will be cast out. 32And I, if I shall be lifted up from the earth, will draw all to Myself.” 33Now He was saying this, signifying by what death He was about to die. 34Then the crowd answered Him, “We heard from the Law that the Christ remains to the age, and how do You say that it is necessary for the Son of Man to be lifted up? Who is this Son of Man?” 35Therefore Jesus said to them, “Yet a little time the Light is among† you⁺. Walk while you⁺ have the Light, so that darkness might not overtake you⁺. And the one walking in the darkness does not know where he goes. 36While you⁺ have the Light, believe in the Light, so that you⁺ may become sons of light.” Jesus spoke these things, and having gone away, He was hidden from them. Belief and Unbelief 37Despite His having done so many signs before them, they did not believe in Him, 38so that the word of Isaiah the prophet might be fulfilled that said: “Lord, who has believed our report? And to whom was the arm of the Lord revealed?”† 39Because of this, they were not able to believe, because again Isaiah said: 40“He has blinded their eyes and hardened their heart, so that they might not see with the eyes, and understand with the heart, and turn, and I will heal them.”† 41Isaiah said these things because† he saw His glory and spoke about Him. 42Nevertheless, indeed also many of the rulers believed in Him, but because of the Pharisees they were not confessing, so that they might not be put out of the synagogue; 43for they loved the glory of men more than the glory of God. 44And Jesus cried out and said, “The one believing in Me does not believe in Me but in the One having sent Me.
45And the one beholding Me beholds the One having sent Me.
46I have come into the world as a light, so that everyone believing in Me should not remain in the darkness.
47And if anyone might hear My words and not keep them,† I do not judge him; for I did not come so that I might judge the world, but so that I might save the world.
48The one rejecting Me and not receiving My words has one judging him: The word that I spoke, which will judge him in the last day.
49For I did not speak from Myself, but the Father Himself, having sent Me, has given Me a commandment, what I should say and what I should speak.
50And I know that His commandment is eternal life. Therefore what I speak, just as the Father has said to Me, so I speak.”
