The Faith of the Centurion 1And when He completed all His words in the hearing of the people, He entered into Capernaum. 2And a certain servant of a centurion, who was valued highly to him, being ill, was about to die. 3And having heard about Jesus, he sent elders of the Jews to Him, asking Him that, having come, He might save his servant. 4And having come to Jesus, they were imploring Him earnestly, saying, “He is worthy to whom You will grant this, 5for he loves our nation, and he built the synagogue for us.” 6And Jesus was going with them. And already, in His being not far distant from the house, the centurion sent friends, saying to Him, “Lord, do not trouble Yourself, for I am not fit that You should enter under my roof. 7Therefore neither did I count myself worthy to come to You. But say a word, and let my servant be healed. 8For I also am a man appointed under authority, having soldiers under me. And I say to this one, ‘Go,’ and he goes; and to another, ‘Come,’ and he comes; and to my servant, ‘Do this,’ and he does it.” 9And having heard these things, Jesus marveled at him. And having turned to the crowd following Him, He said, “I say to you⁺, not even in Israel did I find such great faith.” 10And having returned to the house, those having been sent found the servant† in good health. Jesus Raises a Widow’s Son 11And it came to pass on the next day that He went into a city called Nain, and His† disciples were going with Him, and a great crowd. 12And as He drew near to the gate of the city, also behold, a dead man was being carried out, the only begotten son of his mother; and she was a widow. And a large crowd of the city was with her. 13And having seen her, the Lord was moved with compassion toward her and said to her, “Do not weep.” 14And having come up, He touched the bier;† and those bearing it stood still. And He said, “Young man, to you I say, arise!” 15And the dead man sat up and began to speak, and He gave him to his mother. 16And fear took all, and they were glorifying God, saying, “A great prophet arose among us!” and, “God visited His people!” 17And this word about Him went out in all Judea and in all the surrounding region. John’s Inquiry 18And his disciples reported to John about all these things. 19And having summoned a certain two of his disciples, John sent them to the Lord,† saying, “Are You the coming One, or do we look for another?” 20And having come to Him, the men said, “John the Baptist sent us to You, saying, ‘Are You the coming One, or do we look for another?’” 21In† that very hour, He healed many of diseases and afflictions and evil spirits, and to many blind He granted to see. 22And answering, He said† to them, “Having gone, report to John what you⁺ saw and heard: The blind receive sight, the lame walk, the lepers† are cleansed, and the deaf hear, the dead are raised, the poor have good news proclaimed. 23And blessed is the one who shall not be caused to stumble in Me.†” Jesus Testifies about John 24And on the messengers† of John having gone away, He began to speak to the crowds about John: “What did you⁺ go out into the wilderness† to see? A reed shaken by the wind?
But what did you⁺ go out to see? A man arrayed in soft garments? Behold, those in splendid clothing and living in luxury are in the palaces.
But what did you⁺ go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I say to you⁺, and more than a prophet.
This is he about whom it has been written: ‘Behold, I send My messenger before Your face, who will prepare Your way before You.’†
I say to you⁺, no one among those born of women is greater than John;† yet the least in the kingdom of God is greater than he.” 29And all the people having heard, even the tax collectors, declared God righteous, having been baptized with the baptism of John. 30But the Pharisees and the lawyers set aside the counsel of God for themselves, not having been baptized by him. 31“To what,† therefore, will I liken the men of this generation? And to what are they like? 32They are like children sitting in the marketplace and calling to one another, saying: ‘We played the flute for you⁺, and you⁺ did not dance; we sang a dirge,† 33For John the Baptist has come neither eating bread nor drinking wine, and you⁺ say, ‘He has a demon!’ 34The Son of Man has come eating and drinking, and you⁺ say, ‘Behold, a man, a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and of sinners!’ 35And wisdom was justified from all her children.” A Sinful Woman Anoints Jesus 36And one of the Pharisees was asking Him that He should eat with him, and having entered into the house of the Pharisee, He reclined. 37And behold, a woman in the city who was a sinner. And having known that He is reclining in the house of the Pharisee, having taken an alabaster flask of fragrant oil 38and having stood behind Him at His feet weeping, she began to wet His feet with the tears, and she was wiping them with the hairs of her head, and she was kissing His feet and was anointing them with the fragrant oil. 39And the Pharisee, the one having called Him, having seen, spoke within himself, saying, “If this were a prophet,† He would have known who and what kind the woman is who touches Him—because she is a sinner.” 40And answering, Jesus said to him, “Simon, I have something to say to you.” And he says, “Teacher, say it.” 41“There were two debtors to a certain lender. The one owed five hundred denarii,† and the other fifty. 42On their having nothing to repay, he forgave both. Therefore† which of them will love him more?” 43Answering, Simon said, “I suppose that he to whom he forgave the more.” And “He said to him, “You judged correctly.” 44And having turned to the woman, He was saying to Simon, “Do you see this woman? I entered into your house; you did not give water for My feet, but she herself wet My feet with the tears and wiped them with her hair.† 45You did not give to Me a kiss, but from which time I entered,† she herself did not cease kissing My feet. 46You did not anoint My head with oil, but she herself anointed My feet with fragrant oil. 47Therefore I say to you this: Her many sins have been forgiven, because she loved much; but to whom little is forgiven, he loves little.” 48And He said to her, “Your sins have been forgiven.” 49And those reclining with Him began to say within themselves, “Who is this who even forgives sins?” 50And He said to the woman, “Your faith has saved you; go in peace.”
