The Death of Lazarus 1Now a certain man was sick, Lazarus from Bethany, of the village of Mary and her sister Martha. 2And Mary was the one having anointed the Lord with fragrant oil and having wiped His feet† with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was sick. 3Therefore the sisters sent to Him, saying, “Lord, behold, the one whom You love is sick.” 4And having heard, Jesus said, “This sickness is not unto death, but for the glory of God, so that the Son of God may be glorified through it.” 5Now Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus. 6Therefore when He heard that he is sick, then indeed He remained in the place in which He was two days. 7Then after this, He says to the disciples, “Let us go into Judea again.” 8The disciples say to Him, “Rabbi, just now the Jews were seeking to stone You, and again You are going there?” 9Jesus answered, “Are there not twelve hours of the day? If anyone may walk in the day, he does not stumble, because he sees the light of this world. 10But if anyone may walk in the night, he stumbles, because the light is not in him.” 11He said these things, and after this He says to them, “Lazarus our friend has fallen asleep, but I go so that I may awaken him.” 12Therefore the disciples said to Him, “Lord, if he has fallen asleep, he will be saved.” 13Now Jesus had spoken about his death; but they thought that He speaks about the rest of sleep. 14So then Jesus said to them plainly, “Lazarus has died, 15and I rejoice for your⁺ sake (so that you⁺ might believe) that I was not there. But let us go to him.” 16Therefore Thomas called Didymus† said to the fellow disciples, “Let us also go, so that we may die with Him.” Jesus Comforts Martha and Mary 17Therefore, having come, Jesus found him already having been four days in the tomb. 18Now Bethany was near Jerusalem, about fifteen stadia† away. 19And many of the Jews had come to† Martha and Mary, so that they might console them concerning the brother. 20Therefore Martha, when she heard that Jesus is coming, met Him; but Mary was sitting in the house. 21Then Martha said to Jesus, “Lord, if You had been here, my brother would not have died. 22But even now I know that whatever You might ask God, God will give You.” 23Jesus says to her, “Your brother will rise again.” 24Martha says to Him, “I know that he will rise again in the resurrection in the last day.” 25Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life; the one believing in Me, even if he may die, he will live. 26And everyone living and believing in Me shall never die to the age. Do you believe this?” 27She says to Him, “Yes, Lord; I have believed that You are the Christ, the Son of God, the One coming into the world.” 28And having said these things, she went away and called her sister Mary secretly, having said, “The Teacher is come, and He calls you.” 29And she, as she heard, rose up quickly and was coming to Him. 30Now Jesus had not yet come into the village, but was still† in the place where Martha met Him. 31Then the Jews being with her in the house and consoling her, having seen that Mary rose up quickly and went out, followed her, having thought† she is going to the tomb so that she might weep there. 32Therefore Mary, as she came to where Jesus was, having seen Him, fell at His feet, saying to Him, “Lord, if You had been here, my brother would not have died.” 33Therefore Jesus, as He saw her weeping and the Jews having come with her weeping, was deeply moved in spirit† and Himself troubled. 34And He said, “Where have you⁺ laid him?” They say to Him, “Lord, come and see.” 35Jesus wept. 36Therefore the Jews were saying, “Behold how He was loving him!” 37But some of them said, “Was not this man, the One having opened the eyes of the blind, able to have caused that this one also should not have died?” Jesus Raises Lazarus 38So Jesus, being deeply moved in Himself again, comes to the tomb. Now it was a cave, and a stone was lying upon it. 39Jesus says, “Take away the stone.” Martha, the sister of the one having died, says to Him, “Lord, already he stinks, for it is four days.” 40Jesus says to her, “Did I not say to you that if you should believe, you will see the glory of God?” 41So they took away the stone.† Now Jesus lifted His eyes upward and said, “Father, I thank You that You heard Me. 42And I knew that always You hear Me; but I said it because of the crowd standing around, so that they may believe that You sent Me.” 43And having said these things, He cried out in a loud voice, “Lazarus, come out!” 44The one having been dead came out, the feet and the hands bound with linen strips, and his face bound around in a soudario.† Jesus says to them, “Unbind him and allow him to go.” The Plot to Kill Jesus 45Therefore many of the Jews, having come to Mary and having seen what He did, believed in Him. 46But some of them went away to the Pharisees and told them what† Jesus did. 47Therefore the chief priests and the Pharisees gathered together a council,† and they were saying, “What do we do? For this man does many signs. 48If we shall let Him alone like this, all will believe in Him, and the Romans will come and will take away both our place and nation.” 49But a certain one of them, Caiaphas, being high priest that year, said to them, “You⁺ know nothing at all, 50nor do you⁺ reckon that it is profitable for you⁺† that one man should die for the people and the whole nation should not perish.” 51Now he did not say this from himself, but being high priest that year, he prophesied that Jesus was about to die for the nation, 52and not for the nation only, but also so that the children of God, those having been scattered, He might gather together into one. 53So from that day they took counsel together that they might kill Him. 54Therefore Jesus no longer was walking publicly among the Jews, but He went away from there into the region near the wilderness,† to a city called Ephraim. And there He stayed† with the disciples. 55Now the Passover of the Jews was near, and many went up to Jerusalem out of the region before the Passover, so that they might purify themselves. 56Therefore they were seeking Jesus and were speaking with one another standing in the temple:† “What does it seem to you⁺? That He may not come to the feast?” 57Now the chief priests and the Pharisees had given a command that if anyone should know where He is, he should show it, so that they might seize Him.
