Jesus Teaches at the Feast

1And after these things, Jesus was walking in Galilee, for He was not wanting to walk in Judea because the Jews were seeking to kill Him. 2Now the feast of the Jews—that of Booths— was near. 3Therefore His brothers said to Him, “Depart from here and go into Judea, so that Your disciples will also see Your works that You do. 4For no one does anything in secret and himself seeks to be in public. If You do these things, manifest Yourself to the world.” 5For not even His brothers were believing in Him.

6Therefore Jesus says to them, “My time is not yet present, but your⁺ time is always ready. 7The world is not able to hate you⁺; but it hates Me, because I testify about it that its works are evil. 8You⁺ go up to the feast. I am not going up to this feast, because My time has not yet been fulfilled.”

9And having said these things Himself, He remained in Galilee. 10But when His brothers went up to the feast, then He also went up—not openly, but as in secret.

11Therefore the Jews were seeking Him in the feast and were saying, “Where is that One?”

12And there was much murmuring about Him among the crowds. Indeed some were saying, “He is good.”

But others were saying, “No, but He deceives the crowd.”

13No one, however, was speaking publicly about Him, because of the fear of the Jews.

14And on the feast now being in the middle, Jesus went up into the temple and was teaching. 15Therefore the Jews were marveling, saying, “How has this One know writings, not having learned?”

16Therefore Jesus answered them and said, “My teaching is not of Me, but of the One having sent Me. 17If anyone may desire to do His will, he will know concerning the teaching, whether it is from God or I speak from Myself. 18The one speaking from himself seeks his own glory, but the One seeking the glory of the One having sent Him, He is true, and no unrighteousness is in Him. 19Has not Moses given to you⁺ the law? And none of you⁺ does the law. Why do you⁺ seek to kill Me?”

20The crowd answered, “You have a demon. Who seeks to kill You?”

21Jesus answered and said to them, “I did one work, and you⁺ all marvel. 22Because of this Moses has given to you⁺ the circumcision—not that it is of Moses, but of the fathers—and on the Sabbath you⁺ circumcise a man. 23If a man receives circumcision on the Sabbath so that the law of Moses might not be broken, are you⁺ angry with Me because I made the whole man sound on the Sabbath? 24Do not judge according to appearance, but judge the righteous judgment.”

Is Jesus the Christ?

25Therefore some of those of Jerusalem were saying, “Is this not whom they seek to kill? 26And behold, He speaks publicly, and they say nothing ever to Him. Did the rulers truly know that this is the Christ? 27But we know this man, where He is from. But the Christ, when He may come, no one knows where He is from.”

28Therefore Jesus cried out in the temple, teaching and saying, “You⁺ know Me and you⁺ know where I am from. And I have not come of Myself, but the One having sent Me is true, whom you⁺ do not know. 29I know Him, because I am from Him, and He sent Me.”

30Therefore they were seeking to seize Him, but no one laid the hand upon Him, because His hour had not yet come. 31But many out of the crowd believed in Him and were saying, “When the Christ may come, will He do more signs than this man did?”

32The Pharisees heard the crowd murmuring these things about Him, and the chief priests and the Pharisees sent officers so that they might seize Him. 33Therefore Jesus said, “Yet a little time I am with you⁺, and I go to the One having sent Me. 34You⁺ will seek Me and will not find Me; and where I am, you⁺ are not able to come.”

35Therefore the Jews said among themselves, “Where is He about to go that we will not find Him? Is He about to go to the Diaspora among the Greeks and to teach the Greeks? 36What is this word that He said, ‘You⁺ will seek Me, and will not find Me,’ and, ‘Where I am, you⁺ are not able to come’?”

Living Water

37Now in the last day of the feast, the great day, Jesus stood and cried out, saying, “If anyone may thirst, let him come to Me and drink. 38The one believing in Me, as the Scripture said: ‘Out of his belly will flow rivers of living water.’” 39Now He said this about the Spirit, whom those having believed in Him were about to receive; for the Spirit was not yet, because Jesus was not yet glorified.

Division over Jesus

40Therefore having heard these words, some of the crowd were saying, “This is truly the Prophet.”

41Others were saying, “This is the Christ.”

But others were saying, “How indeed does the Christ come out of Galilee? 42Did not the Scripture say that out of the seed of David, and from Bethlehem the village where David was, comes the Christ?

43Therefore a division happened in the crowd because of Him. 44Now some of them were wanting to seize Him, but no one laid the hands on Him.

The Unbelief of the Jewish Leaders

45Therefore the officers came to the chief priests and Pharisees, and they said to them, “Why did you⁺ not bring Him?”

46The officers answered, “Never did a man speak thus, as this man speaks!”

47Therefore the Pharisees answered them, “Have you⁺ also been deceived? 48Did any of the rulers or of the Pharisees believe in Him? 49But this crowd, not knowing the law, they are accursed.”

50Nicodemus, the one having come to Him before, being one of them, says to them, 51“Does our law judge the man unless first it might hear from him and know what he does?”

52“They answered and said to him, “Are you also out of Galilee? Search and see that out of Galilee a prophet is not raised.”

53And each went to his home.
