But in spite of all this,
This phrase refers to the preceding context where Moses recounts the Israelites' journey from Egypt to the edge of the Promised Land. Despite witnessing numerous miracles, such as the plagues in Egypt, the parting of the Red Sea, and the provision of manna, the Israelites still struggled with faith. This highlights a recurring theme in the Old Testament: the human tendency to doubt God despite clear evidence of His power and faithfulness.

you did not trust
The lack of trust here is significant, as trust in God is a central tenet of the covenant relationship between God and His people. The Hebrew word for trust, "batach," implies a sense of security and confidence. The Israelites' failure to trust God is a reflection of their spiritual immaturity and fear, which ultimately led to their wandering in the wilderness for 40 years. This serves as a warning to believers about the consequences of unbelief and the importance of faith.

the LORD your God,
The use of "LORD" in all capital letters signifies the divine name YHWH, emphasizing God's covenantal relationship with Israel. This phrase underscores the personal and relational aspect of God as their deliverer and provider. The Israelites' failure to trust "the LORD your God" is particularly grievous because it is a rejection of the very One who has consistently demonstrated His love and commitment to them. This phrase also points forward to the New Testament, where trust in God is fulfilled through faith in Jesus Christ, who is the ultimate revelation of God's faithfulness and love.

4. Wilderness

5. Promised Land (Canaan)

Teaching Points
The Importance of Trusting God
Trust in God is foundational to the believer's life. Despite witnessing God's mighty works, the Israelites failed to trust Him. We must learn from their example and place our trust in God's promises and character.

Consequences of Unbelief
Unbelief leads to disobedience and missed blessings. The Israelites' lack of faith resulted in 40 years of wandering. Our unbelief can similarly hinder our spiritual journey and growth.

Remembering God's Faithfulness
Reflecting on past experiences of God's faithfulness can strengthen our trust in Him. The Israelites had many reasons to trust God, yet they forgot His past deliverance. We should regularly recount God's faithfulness in our lives.

Faith in Action
True faith is demonstrated through action. The Israelites' failure to act on God's promise showed their lack of faith. We are called to act on our faith, trusting God even when circumstances seem daunting.

Encouragement in Community
The community of believers plays a crucial role in encouraging faith. The Israelites' collective unbelief shows the power of communal influence. We should encourage one another to trust God and hold each other accountable.Verses 32, 33. - Yet in this thing ye did not believe the Lord your God; literally, With this thing [or With this word] ye were not believing in Jehovah your God. The Hebrew דָבָר, like the Greek ρῆμα, signifies either thing or word. If the former rendering be adopted here, the meaning will be, Notwithstanding this fact of which you have had experience, viz. how God has interposed for your protection and deliverance, ye were still unbelieving in him. If the latter rendering be adopted, the meaning will be, Notwithstanding what I then said to you, ye remained unbelieving, etc. This latter seems the more probable meaning. In the Hebrew text there is a strong stop (athnach) after this word, as if a pause of astonishment followed this utterance - Notwithstanding this word, strange to say! ye were not believing, etc. The participle ("believing") is intended to indicate the continuing of this unbelief. So also in ver. 34, the participle form is used - "who was going in the way before you," to indicate that not once and again, but continually, the Lord went before them; and this made the sin of their unbelief all the more marked and aggravated. (For the fact here referred to, see Exodus 13:21, etc.; Numbers 9:15, etc.; Numbers 10:33-36.)
