| 12Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven; for in the same way they persecuted the prophets before you. | 12Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you. |
| 13You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its savor, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything except to be thrown out and trampled under people’s feet. |

| 22But I tell you that anyone who is angry with his brother will be subject to judgment. Again, anyone who says to his brother, ‘Raca,’ will be subject to the Sanhedrin. But anyone who says, ‘You fool!’ will be subject to the fire of hell. | 22But I say to you that everyone who is angry with his brother will be liable to judgment; whoever insults his brother will be liable to the council; and whoever says, ‘You fool!’ will be liable to the hell of fire. |

| 28But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman to lust after her has already committed adultery with her in his heart. | 28But I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lustful intent has already committed adultery with her in his heart. |
| 29If your right eye causes you to sin, gouge it out and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to be thrown into hell. | 29If your right eye causes you to sin, tear it out and throw it away. | 32But I tell you that anyone who divorces his wife, except for sexual immorality, brings adultery upon her. And he who marries a divorced woman commits adultery. | 32But I say to you that everyone who divorces his wife, except on the ground of sexual immorality, makes her commit adultery, and whoever marries a divorced woman commits adultery. |
| 33Again, you have heard that it was said to the ancients, ‘Do not break your oath, but fulfill your vows to the Lord.’ | 33“Again you have heard that it was said to those of old, ‘You shall not swear falsely, but shall perform to the Lord what you have sworn.’ |
| 34But I tell you not to swear at all: either by heaven, for it is God’s throne; | 34But I say to you, Do not take an oath at all, either by heaven, for it is the throne of God, |
| 35or by the earth, for it is His footstool; or by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the great King. | 35or by the earth, for it is his footstool, or by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the great King. |
| 36Nor should you swear by your head, for you cannot make a single hair white or black. | 36And do not take an oath by your head, for you cannot make one hair white or black. |
| 37Simply let your ‘Yes’ be ‘Yes,’ and your ‘No,’ ‘No.’ Anything more comes from the evil one. | 37Let what you say be simply ‘Yes’ or ‘No’; anything more than this comes from evil. |
| 38You have heard that it was said, ‘Eye for eye and tooth for tooth.’ | 38“You have heard that it was said, ‘An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.’ |
| 39But I tell you not to resist an evil person. If someone slaps you on your right cheek, turn to him the other also; | 39But I say to you, Do not resist the one who is evil. But if anyone slaps you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also. |
| 40if someone wants to sue you and take your tunic, let him have your cloak as well; | 40And if anyone would sue you and take your tunic, let him have your cloak as well. |
| 41and if someone forces you to go one mile, go with him two miles. | 41And if anyone forces you to go one mile, go with him two miles. |
| 42Give to the one who asks you, and do not turn away from the one who wants to borrow from you. | 42Give to the one who begs from you, and do not refuse the one who would borrow from you. |
| 43You have heard that it was said, ‘Love your neighbor’ and ‘Hate your enemy.’ | 43“You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ |

| 45that you may be sons of your Father in heaven. He causes His sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous. | 45so that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven. For he makes his sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust. |
| 46If you love those who love you, what reward will you get? Do not even tax collectors do the same? | 46For if you love those who love you, what reward do you have? Do not even the tax collectors do the same? |
| 47And if you greet only your brothers, what are you doing more than others? Do not even Gentiles do the same? | 47And if you greet only your brothers, what more are you doing than others? Do not even the Gentiles do the same? |
| 48Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect. | 48You therefore must be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect. |
