Berean Study Bible | International Standard Version |
A Maskil of Asaph. Why have You rejected us forever, O God? Why does Your anger smolder against the sheep of Your pasture? | 1Why, God? Have you rejected us forever? Your anger is burning against the sheep of your pasture. |
Remember Your congregation, which You purchased long ago and redeemed as the tribe of Your inheritance—Mount Zion where You dwell. | 2Remember your community, whom you purchased long ago, the tribe whom you redeemed for your possession. Remember Mount Zion, where you live. |
Turn Your steps to the everlasting ruins, to everything in the sanctuary the enemy has destroyed. | 3Hurry! Look at the permanent ruins— every calamity the enemy brought upon the Holy Place. |
Your foes have roared within Your meeting place; they have unfurled their banners as signs, | 4Those who are opposing you roar where we were meeting with you; they unfurl their war banners as signs. |
like men wielding axes in a thicket of trees | 5As one blazes a trail through a forest with an ax, |
and smashing all the carvings with hatchets and picks. | 6now they're tearing down all its carved work with hatchets and hammers. |
They have burned Your sanctuary to the ground; they have defiled the dwelling place of Your Name. | 7They burned your sanctuary to the ground, desecrating your dwelling place. |
They said in their hearts, “We will crush them completely.” They burned down every place where God met us in the land. | 8They say to themselves, "We'll crush them completely;" They burned down all the meeting places of God in the land. |
There are no signs for us to see. There is no longer any prophet. And none of us knows how long this will last. | 9We see no signs for us; there is no longer a prophet, and no one among us knows the future. |
How long, O God, will the enemy taunt You? Will the foe revile Your name forever? | 10God, how long will the adversary scorn while the enemy despises your name endlessly? |
Why do You withdraw Your strong right hand? Stretch it out to destroy them! | 11Why do you not withdraw your hand— your right hand—from your bosom and destroy them? |
Yet God is my King from ancient times, working salvation on the earth. | 12But God is my king from ancient times, who brings acts of deliverance throughout the earth. |
You divided the sea by Your strength; You smashed the heads of the dragons of the sea; | 13You split the sea by your own power. You shattered the heads of sea monsters in the water. |
You crushed the heads of Leviathan; You fed him to the creatures of the desert. | 14You crushed the heads of Leviathan. You set it as food for desert creatures. |
You broke open the fountain and the flood; You dried up the ever-flowing rivers. | 15You opened both the spring and the river; you dried up flowing rivers. |
The day is Yours, and also the night; You established the moon and the sun. | 16Yours is the day, and yours is the night; you established the moon and the sun. |
You set all the boundaries of the earth; You made the summer and winter. | 17You set all the boundaries of the earth; you made summer and winter. |
Remember how the enemy has mocked You, O LORD, how a foolish people has spurned Your name. | 18Remember this: The enemy scorns the LORD and a foolish people despises your name. |
Do not deliver the soul of Your dove to beasts; do not forget the lives of Your afflicted forever. | 19Don't hand over the life of your dove to beasts; do not continuously forget your afflicted ones. |
Consider Your covenant, for haunts of violence fill the dark places of the land. | 20Pay attention to your covenant, for the dark regions of the earth are full of violence. |
Do not let the oppressed retreat in shame; may the poor and needy praise Your name. | 21Don't let the oppressed return in humiliation. The poor and needy will praise your name. |
Rise up, O God; defend Your cause! Remember how the fool mocks You all day long. | 22Get up, God, and prosecute your case— remember that you're being scorned by fools all day long. |
Do not disregard the clamor of Your adversaries, the uproar of Your enemies that ascends continually. | 23Don't ignore the shout of those opposing you, The uproar of those who rebel against you continuously. |
