Give thanks to the LORD, for He is good; His loving devotion endures forever.1Oh give thanks to the LORD, for He is good, For His lovingkindness is everlasting.
Let the redeemed of the LORD say so, whom He has redeemed from the hand of the enemy2Let the redeemed of the LORD say so, Whom He has redeemed from the hand of the adversary
and gathered from the lands, from east and west, from north and south.3And gathered from the lands, From the east and from the west, From the north and from the south.
Some wandered in desert wastelands, finding no path to a city in which to dwell.4They wandered in the wilderness in a desert region; They did not find a way to an inhabited city.
They were hungry and thirsty; their soul fainted within them.5They were hungry and thirsty; Their soul fainted within them.
Then they cried out to the LORD in their trouble, and He delivered them from their distress.6Then they cried out to the LORD in their trouble; He delivered them out of their distresses.
He led them on a straight path to reach a city where they could live.7He led them also by a straight way, To go to an inhabited city.
Let them give thanks to the LORD for His loving devotion and His wonders to the sons of men.8Let them give thanks to the LORD for His lovingkindness, And for His wonders to the sons of men!
For He satisfies the thirsty and fills the hungry with good things.9For He has satisfied the thirsty soul, And the hungry soul He has filled with what is good.
Some sat in darkness and in the shadow of death, prisoners in affliction and chains,10There were those who dwelt in darkness and in the shadow of death, Prisoners in misery and chains,
because they rebelled against the words of God and despised the counsel of the Most High.11Because they had rebelled against the words of God And spurned the counsel of the Most High.
He humbled their hearts with hard labor; they stumbled, and there was no one to help.12Therefore He humbled their heart with labor; They stumbled and there was none to help.
Then they cried out to the LORD in their trouble, and He saved them from their distress.13Then they cried out to the LORD in their trouble; He saved them out of their distresses.
He brought them out of darkness and the shadow of death and broke away their chains.14He brought them out of darkness and the shadow of death And broke their bands apart.
Let them give thanks to the LORD for His loving devotion and His wonders to the sons of men.15Let them give thanks to the LORD for His lovingkindness, And for His wonders to the sons of men!
For He has broken down the gates of bronze and cut through the bars of iron.16For He has shattered gates of bronze And cut bars of iron asunder.
Fools, in their rebellious ways, and through their iniquities, suffered affliction.17Fools, because of their rebellious way, And because of their iniquities, were afflicted.
They loathed all food and drew near to the gates of death.18Their soul abhorred all kinds of food, And they drew near to the gates of death.
Then they cried out to the LORD in their trouble, and He saved them from their distress.19Then they cried out to the LORD in their trouble; He saved them out of their distresses.
He sent forth His word and healed them; He rescued them from the Pit.20He sent His word and healed them, And delivered them from their destructions.
Let them give thanks to the LORD for His loving devotion and His wonders to the sons of men.21Let them give thanks to the LORD for His lovingkindness, And for His wonders to the sons of men!
Let them offer sacrifices of thanksgiving and declare His works with rejoicing.22Let them also offer sacrifices of thanksgiving, And tell of His works with joyful singing.
Others went out to sea in ships, conducting trade on the mighty waters.23Those who go down to the sea in ships, Who do business on great waters;
They saw the works of the LORD, and His wonders in the deep.24They have seen the works of the LORD, And His wonders in the deep.
For He spoke and raised a tempest that lifted the waves of the sea.25For He spoke and raised up a stormy wind, Which lifted up the waves of the sea.
They mounted up to the heavens, then sunk to the depths; their courage melted in their anguish.26They rose up to the heavens, they went down to the depths; Their soul melted away in their misery.
They reeled and staggered like drunkards, and all their skill was useless.27They reeled and staggered like a drunken man, And were at their wits' end.
Then they cried out to the LORD in their trouble, and He brought them out of their distress.28Then they cried to the LORD in their trouble, And He brought them out of their distresses.
He calmed the storm to a whisper, and the waves of the sea were hushed.29He caused the storm to be still, So that the waves of the sea were hushed.
They rejoiced in the silence, and He guided them to the harbor they desired.30Then they were glad because they were quiet, So He guided them to their desired haven.
Let them give thanks to the LORD for His loving devotion and His wonders to the sons of men.31Let them give thanks to the LORD for His lovingkindness, And for His wonders to the sons of men!
Let them exalt Him in the assembly of the people and praise Him in the council of the elders.32Let them extol Him also in the congregation of the people, And praise Him at the seat of the elders.
He turns rivers into deserts, springs of water into thirsty ground,33He changes rivers into a wilderness And springs of water into a thirsty ground;
and fruitful land into fields of salt, because of the wickedness of its dwellers.34A fruitful land into a salt waste, Because of the wickedness of those who dwell in it.
He turns a desert into pools of water and a dry land into flowing springs.35He changes a wilderness into a pool of water And a dry land into springs of water;
He causes the hungry to settle there, that they may establish a city in which to dwell.36And there He makes the hungry to dwell, So that they may establish an inhabited city,
They sow fields and plant vineyards that yield a fruitful harvest.37And sow fields and plant vineyards, And gather a fruitful harvest.
He blesses them, and they multiply greatly; He does not let their herds diminish.38Also He blesses them and they multiply greatly, And He does not let their cattle decrease.
When they are decreased and humbled by oppression, evil, and sorrow,39When they are diminished and bowed down Through oppression, misery and sorrow,
He pours out contempt on the nobles and makes them wander in a trackless wasteland.40He pours contempt upon princes And makes them wander in a pathless waste.
But He lifts the needy from affliction and increases their families like flocks.41But He sets the needy securely on high away from affliction, And makes his families like a flock.
The upright see and rejoice, and all iniquity shuts its mouth.42The upright see it and are glad; But all unrighteousness shuts its mouth.
Let him who is wise pay heed to these things and consider the loving devotion of the LORD.43Who is wise? Let him give heed to these things, And consider the lovingkindnesses of the LORD.
