For the choirmaster. To the tune of “Do Not Destroy.” A Miktam of David. Do you indeed speak justly, O rulers? Do you judge uprightly, O sons of men? | 1For the choir director; set to Al-tashheth. A Mikhtam of David. Do you indeed speak righteousness, O gods? Do you judge uprightly, O sons of men? |
No, in your hearts you devise injustice; with your hands you mete out violence on the earth. | 2No, in heart you work unrighteousness; On earth you weigh out the violence of your hands. |
The wicked are estranged from the womb; the liars go astray from birth. | 3The wicked are estranged from the womb; These who speak lies go astray from birth. |
Their venom is like the venom of a snake, like a cobra that shuts its ears, | 4They have venom like the venom of a serpent; Like a deaf cobra that stops up its ear, |
refusing to hear the tune of the charmer who skillfully weaves his spell. | 5So that it does not hear the voice of charmers, Or a skillful caster of spells. |
O God, shatter their teeth in their mouths; O LORD, tear out the fangs of the lions. | 6O God, shatter their teeth in their mouth; Break out the fangs of the young lions, O LORD. |
May they vanish like water that runs off; when they draw the bow, may their arrows be blunted. | 7Let them flow away like water that runs off; When he aims his arrows, let them be as headless shafts. |
Like a slug that dissolves in its slime, like a woman’s stillborn child, may they never see the sun. | 8Let them be as a snail which melts away as it goes along, Like the miscarriages of a woman which never see the sun. |
Before your pots can feel the burning thorns—whether green or dry—He will sweep them away. | 9Before your pots can feel the fire of thorns He will sweep them away with a whirlwind, the green and the burning alike. |
The righteous will rejoice when they see they are avenged; they will wash their feet in the blood of the wicked. | 10The righteous will rejoice when he sees the vengeance; He will wash his feet in the blood of the wicked. |
Then men will say, “There is surely a reward for the righteous! There is surely a God who judges the earth!” | 11And men will say, "Surely there is a reward for the righteous; Surely there is a God who judges on earth!" |
