On the first day of the second month of the second year after the Israelites had come out of the land of Egypt, the LORD spoke to Moses in the Tent of Meeting in the Wilderness of Sinai. He said:1Now the LORD spoke to Moses in the tent of meeting in the wilderness of Sinai on the first day of the second month of the second year after the Israelites departed from the land of Egypt. He said:
“Take a census of the whole congregation of Israel by their clans and families, listing every man by name, one by one.2"Take a census of the entire Israelite community by their clans and families, counting the name of every individual male.
You and Aaron are to number those who are twenty years of age or older by their divisions—everyone who can serve in Israel’s army.3You and Aaron are to number all in Israel who can serve in the army, those who are twenty years old or older, by their divisions.
And one man from each tribe, the head of each family, must be there with you.4And to help you there is to be a man from each tribe, each man the head of his family.
These are the names of the men who are to assist you: From the tribe of Reuben, Elizur son of Shedeur;5Now these are the names of the men who are to help you: from Reuben, Elizur son of Shedeur;

These men were appointed from the congregation; they were the leaders of the tribes of their fathers, the heads of the clans of Israel.16These were the ones chosen from the community, leaders of their ancestral tribes. They were the heads of the thousands of Israel.
So Moses and Aaron took these men who had been designated by name,17So Moses and Aaron took these men who had been mentioned specifically by name,
and on the first day of the second month they assembled the whole congregation and recorded their ancestry by clans and families, counting one by one the names of those twenty years of age or older,18and they assembled the entire community together on the first day of the second month. Then the people recorded their ancestry by their clans and families, and the men who were twenty years old or older were listed by name individually,
just as the LORD had commanded Moses. So Moses numbered them in the Wilderness of Sinai:19just as the LORD had commanded Moses. And so he numbered them in the wilderness of Sinai.

These were the men numbered by Moses and Aaron, with the assistance of the twelve leaders of Israel, each one representing his family.44These were the men whom Moses and Aaron numbered along with the twelve leaders of Israel, each of whom was from his own family.
So all the Israelites twenty years of age or older who could serve in Israel’s army were counted according to their families.45All the Israelites who were twenty years old or older, who could serve in Israel's army, were numbered according to their families.
And all those counted totaled 603,550.46And all those numbered totaled 603,550.
The Levites, however, were not numbered along with them by the tribe of their fathers.47But the Levites, according to the tribe of their fathers, were not numbered among them.
For the LORD had said to Moses:48The LORD had said to Moses,
“Do not number the tribe of Levi in the census with the other Israelites.49"Only the tribe of Levi you must not number or count with the other Israelites.
Instead, you are to appoint the Levites over the tabernacle of the Testimony, all its furnishings, and everything in it. They shall carry the tabernacle and all its articles, care for it, and camp around it.50But appoint the Levites over the tabernacle of the testimony, over all its furnishings and over everything in it. They must carry the tabernacle and all its furnishings; and they must attend to it and camp around it.
Whenever the tabernacle is to move, the Levites are to take it down, and whenever it is to be pitched, the Levites are to set it up. Any outsider who goes near it must be put to death.51Whenever the tabernacle is to move, the Levites must take it down, and whenever the tabernacle is to be reassembled, the Levites must set it up. Any unauthorized person who approaches it must be killed.
The Israelites are to camp by their divisions, each man in his own camp and under his own standard.52"The Israelites will camp according to their divisions, each man in his camp, and each man by his standard.
But the Levites are to camp around the tabernacle of the Testimony and watch over it, so that no wrath will fall on the congregation of Israel. So the Levites are responsible for the tabernacle of the Testimony.”53But the Levites must camp around the tabernacle of the testimony, so that the LORD's anger will not fall on the Israelite community. The Levites are responsible for the care of the tabernacle of the testimony."
Thus the Israelites did everything just as the LORD had commanded Moses.54The Israelites did according to all that the LORD commanded Moses--that is what they did.
