On the first day of the second month of the second year after the Israelites had come out of the land of Egypt, the LORD spoke to Moses in the Tent of Meeting in the Wilderness of Sinai. He said:1The LORD spoke to Moses in the wilderness of Sinai, in the tent of meeting, on the first day of the second month, in the second year after they had come out of the land of Egypt, saying,
“Take a census of the whole congregation of Israel by their clans and families, listing every man by name, one by one.2“Take a census of all the congregation of the people of Israel, by clans, by fathers’ houses, according to the number of names, every male, head by head.
You and Aaron are to number those who are twenty years of age or older by their divisions—everyone who can serve in Israel’s army.3From twenty years old and upward, all in Israel who are able to go to war, you and Aaron shall list them, company by company.
And one man from each tribe, the head of each family, must be there with you.4And there shall be with you a man from each tribe, each man being the head of the house of his fathers.

These men were appointed from the congregation; they were the leaders of the tribes of their fathers, the heads of the clans of Israel.16These were the ones chosen from the congregation, the chiefs of their ancestral tribes, the heads of the clans of Israel.
So Moses and Aaron took these men who had been designated by name,17Moses and Aaron took these men who had been named,
and on the first day of the second month they assembled the whole congregation and recorded their ancestry by clans and families, counting one by one the names of those twenty years of age or older,18and on the first day of the second month, they assembled the whole congregation together, who registered themselves by clans, by fathers’ houses, according to the number of names from twenty years old and upward, head by head,
just as the LORD had commanded Moses. So Moses numbered them in the Wilderness of Sinai:19as the LORD commanded Moses. So he listed them in the wilderness of Sinai.

So all the Israelites twenty years of age or older who could serve in Israel’s army were counted according to their families.45So all those listed of the people of Israel, by their fathers’ houses, from twenty years old and upward, every man able to go to war in Israel—
And all those counted totaled 603,550.46all those listed were 603,550.
The Levites, however, were not numbered along with them by the tribe of their fathers.47But the Levites were not listed along with them by their ancestral tribe.
For the LORD had said to Moses:48For the LORD spoke to Moses, saying,
“Do not number the tribe of Levi in the census with the other Israelites.49“Only the tribe of Levi you shall not list, and you shall not take a census of them among the people of Israel.
Instead, you are to appoint the Levites over the tabernacle of the Testimony, all its furnishings, and everything in it. They shall carry the tabernacle and all its articles, care for it, and camp around it.50But appoint the Levites over the tabernacle of the testimony, and over all its furnishings, and over all that belongs to it. They are to carry the tabernacle and all its furnishings, and they shall take care of it and shall camp around the tabernacle.
Whenever the tabernacle is to move, the Levites are to take it down, and whenever it is to be pitched, the Levites are to set it up. Any outsider who goes near it must be put to death.51When the tabernacle is to set out, the Levites shall take it down, and when the tabernacle is to be pitched, the Levites shall set it up. And if any outsider comes near, he shall be put to death.
The Israelites are to camp by their divisions, each man in his own camp and under his own standard.52The people of Israel shall pitch their tents by their companies, each man in his own camp and each man by his own standard.
But the Levites are to camp around the tabernacle of the Testimony and watch over it, so that no wrath will fall on the congregation of Israel. So the Levites are responsible for the tabernacle of the Testimony.”53But the Levites shall camp around the tabernacle of the testimony, so that there may be no wrath on the congregation of the people of Israel. And the Levites shall keep guard over the tabernacle of the testimony.”
Thus the Israelites did everything just as the LORD had commanded Moses.54Thus did the people of Israel; they did according to all that the LORD commanded Moses.
