Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good; his faithful love endures forever. | 1Oh give thanks to the LORD, for He is good, For His lovingkindness is everlasting. |
Let the redeemed of the LORD proclaim that he has redeemed them from the power of the foe | 2Let the redeemed of the LORD say so, Whom He has redeemed from the hand of the adversary |
and has gathered them from the lands--from the east and the west, from the north and the south. | 3And gathered from the lands, From the east and from the west, From the north and from the south. |
Some wandered in the desolate wilderness, finding no way to a city where they could live. | 4They wandered in the wilderness in a desert region; They did not find a way to an inhabited city. |
They were hungry and thirsty; their spirits failed within them. | 5They were hungry and thirsty; Their soul fainted within them. |
Then they cried out to the LORD in their trouble; he rescued them from their distress. | 6Then they cried out to the LORD in their trouble; He delivered them out of their distresses. |
He led them by the right path to go to a city where they could live. | 7He led them also by a straight way, To go to an inhabited city. |
Let them give thanks to the LORD for his faithful love and his wondrous works for all humanity. | 8Let them give thanks to the LORD for His lovingkindness, And for His wonders to the sons of men! |
For he has satisfied the thirsty and filled the hungry with good things. | 9For He has satisfied the thirsty soul, And the hungry soul He has filled with what is good. |
Others sat in darkness and gloom--prisoners in cruel chains-- | 10There were those who dwelt in darkness and in the shadow of death, Prisoners in misery and chains, |
because they rebelled against God's commands and despised the counsel of the Most High. | 11Because they had rebelled against the words of God And spurned the counsel of the Most High. |
He broke their spirits with hard labor; they stumbled, and there was no one to help. | 12Therefore He humbled their heart with labor; They stumbled and there was none to help. |
Then they cried out to the LORD in their trouble; he saved them from their distress. | 13Then they cried out to the LORD in their trouble; He saved them out of their distresses. |
He brought them out of darkness and gloom and broke their chains apart. | 14He brought them out of darkness and the shadow of death And broke their bands apart. |
Let them give thanks to the LORD for his faithful love and his wondrous works for all humanity. | 15Let them give thanks to the LORD for His lovingkindness, And for His wonders to the sons of men! |
For he has broken down the bronze gates and cut through the iron bars. | 16For He has shattered gates of bronze And cut bars of iron asunder. |
Fools suffered affliction because of their rebellious ways and their iniquities. | 17Fools, because of their rebellious way, And because of their iniquities, were afflicted. |
They loathed all food and came near the gates of death. | 18Their soul abhorred all kinds of food, And they drew near to the gates of death. |
Then they cried out to the LORD in their trouble; he saved them from their distress. | 19Then they cried out to the LORD in their trouble; He saved them out of their distresses. |
He sent his word and healed them; he rescued them from the Pit. | 20He sent His word and healed them, And delivered them from their destructions. |
Let them give thanks to the LORD for his faithful love and his wondrous works for all humanity. | 21Let them give thanks to the LORD for His lovingkindness, And for His wonders to the sons of men! |
Let them offer sacrifices of thanksgiving and announce his works with shouts of joy. | 22Let them also offer sacrifices of thanksgiving, And tell of His works with joyful singing. |
Others went to sea in ships, conducting trade on the vast water. | 23Those who go down to the sea in ships, Who do business on great waters; |
They saw the LORD's works, his wondrous works in the deep. | 24They have seen the works of the LORD, And His wonders in the deep. |
He spoke and raised a stormy wind that stirred up the waves of the sea. | 25For He spoke and raised up a stormy wind, Which lifted up the waves of the sea. |
Rising up to the sky, sinking down to the depths, their courage melting away in anguish, | 26They rose up to the heavens, they went down to the depths; Their soul melted away in their misery. |
they reeled and staggered like a drunkard, and all their skill was useless. | 27They reeled and staggered like a drunken man, And were at their wits' end. |
Then they cried out to the LORD in their trouble, and he brought them out of their distress. | 28Then they cried to the LORD in their trouble, And He brought them out of their distresses. |
He stilled the storm to a whisper, and the waves of the sea were hushed. | 29He caused the storm to be still, So that the waves of the sea were hushed. |
They rejoiced when the waves grew quiet. Then he guided them to the harbor they longed for. | 30Then they were glad because they were quiet, So He guided them to their desired haven. |
Let them give thanks to the LORD for his faithful love and his wondrous works for all humanity. | 31Let them give thanks to the LORD for His lovingkindness, And for His wonders to the sons of men! |
Let them exalt him in the assembly of the people and praise him in the council of the elders. | 32Let them extol Him also in the congregation of the people, And praise Him at the seat of the elders. |
He turns rivers into desert, springs into thirsty ground, | 33He changes rivers into a wilderness And springs of water into a thirsty ground; |
and fruitful land into salty wasteland, because of the wickedness of its inhabitants. | 34A fruitful land into a salt waste, Because of the wickedness of those who dwell in it. |
He turns a desert into a pool, dry land into springs. | 35He changes a wilderness into a pool of water And a dry land into springs of water; |
He causes the hungry to settle there, and they establish a city where they can live. | 36And there He makes the hungry to dwell, So that they may establish an inhabited city, |
They sow fields and plant vineyards that yield a fruitful harvest. | 37And sow fields and plant vineyards, And gather a fruitful harvest. |
He blesses them, and they multiply greatly; he does not let their livestock decrease. | 38Also He blesses them and they multiply greatly, And He does not let their cattle decrease. |
When they are diminished and are humbled by cruel oppression and sorrow, | 39When they are diminished and bowed down Through oppression, misery and sorrow, |
he pours contempt on nobles and makes them wander in a trackless wasteland. | 40He pours contempt upon princes And makes them wander in a pathless waste. |
But he lifts the needy out of their suffering and makes their families multiply like flocks. | 41But He sets the needy securely on high away from affliction, And makes his families like a flock. |
The upright see it and rejoice, and all injustice shuts its mouth. | 42The upright see it and are glad; But all unrighteousness shuts its mouth. |
Let whoever is wise pay attention to these things and consider the LORD's acts of faithful love. | 43Who is wise? Let him give heed to these things, And consider the lovingkindnesses of the LORD. |
