This is the word that came to Jeremiah from the LORD in the tenth year of King Zedekiah of Judah, which was the eighteenth year of Nebuchadnezzar. | 1This is the word that came to Jeremiah from the LORD in the tenth year of Zedekiah king of Judah, which was the eighteenth year of Nebuchadnezzar. |
At that time, the army of the king of Babylon was besieging Jerusalem, and the prophet Jeremiah was imprisoned in the guard's courtyard in the palace of the king of Judah. | 2The army of the king of Babylon was then besieging Jerusalem, and Jeremiah the prophet was confined in the courtyard of the guard in the royal palace of Judah. |
King Zedekiah of Judah had imprisoned him, saying, "Why are you prophesying as you do? You say, 'This is what the LORD says: Look, I am about to hand this city over to Babylon's king, and he will capture it. | 3Now Zedekiah king of Judah had imprisoned him there, saying, "Why do you prophesy as you do? You say, 'This is what the LORD says: I am about to give this city into the hands of the king of Babylon, and he will capture it. |
King Zedekiah of Judah will not escape from the Chaldeans; indeed, he will certainly be handed over to Babylon's king. They will speak face to face and meet eye to eye. | 4Zedekiah king of Judah will not escape the Babylonians but will certainly be given into the hands of the king of Babylon, and will speak with him face to face and see him with his own eyes. |
He will take Zedekiah to Babylon, where he will stay until I attend to him--this is the LORD's declaration. For you will fight the Chaldeans, but you will not succeed.'" | 5He will take Zedekiah to Babylon, where he will remain until I deal with him, declares the LORD. If you fight against the Babylonians, you will not succeed.'" |
Jeremiah replied, "The word of the LORD came to me: | 6Jeremiah said, "The word of the LORD came to me: |
Watch! Hanamel, the son of your uncle Shallum, is coming to you to say, 'Buy my field in Anathoth for yourself, for you own the right of redemption to buy it.' | 7Hanamel son of Shallum your uncle is going to come to you and say, 'Buy my field at Anathoth, because as nearest relative it is your right and duty to buy it.' |
"Then, as the LORD had said, my cousin Hanamel came to the guard's courtyard and urged me, 'Please buy my field in Anathoth in the land of Benjamin, for you own the right of inheritance and redemption. Buy it for yourself.' Then I knew that this was the word of the LORD. | 8"Then, just as the LORD had said, my cousin Hanamel came to me in the courtyard of the guard and said, 'Buy my field at Anathoth in the territory of Benjamin. Since it is your right to redeem it and possess it, buy it for yourself.' "I knew that this was the word of the LORD; |
So I bought the field in Anathoth from my cousin Hanamel, and I weighed out the silver to him--seventeen shekels of silver. | 9so I bought the field at Anathoth from my cousin Hanamel and weighed out for him seventeen shekels of silver. |
I recorded it on a scroll, sealed it, called in witnesses, and weighed out the silver on the scales. | 10I signed and sealed the deed, had it witnessed, and weighed out the silver on the scales. |
I took the purchase agreement--the sealed copy with its terms and conditions and the open copy-- | 11I took the deed of purchase--the sealed copy containing the terms and conditions, as well as the unsealed copy-- |
and gave the purchase agreement to Baruch son of Neriah, son of Mahseiah. I did this in the sight of my cousin Hanamel, the witnesses who had signed the purchase agreement, and all the Judeans sitting in the guard's courtyard. | 12and I gave this deed to Baruch son of Neriah, the son of Mahseiah, in the presence of my cousin Hanamel and of the witnesses who had signed the deed and of all the Jews sitting in the courtyard of the guard. |
"I charged Baruch in their sight, | 13"In their presence I gave Baruch these instructions: |
'This is what the LORD of Armies, the God of Israel, says: Take these scrolls--this purchase agreement with the sealed copy and this open copy--and put them in an earthen storage jar so they will last a long time. | 14This is what the LORD Almighty, the God of Israel, says: Take these documents, both the sealed and unsealed copies of the deed of purchase, and put them in a clay jar so they will last a long time. |
For this is what the LORD of Armies, the God of Israel, says: Houses, fields, and vineyards will again be bought in this land.' | 15For this is what the LORD Almighty, the God of Israel, says: Houses, fields and vineyards will again be bought in this land.' |
"After I had given the purchase agreement to Baruch, son of Neriah, I prayed to the LORD: | 16"After I had given the deed of purchase to Baruch son of Neriah, I prayed to the LORD: |
Oh, Lord GOD! You yourself made the heavens and earth by your great power and with your outstretched arm. Nothing is too difficult for you! | 17"Ah, Sovereign LORD, you have made the heavens and the earth by your great power and outstretched arm. Nothing is too hard for you. |
You show faithful love to thousands but lay the fathers' iniquity on their sons' laps after them, great and mighty God whose name is the LORD of Armies, | 18You show love to thousands but bring the punishment for the parents' sins into the laps of their children after them. Great and mighty God, whose name is the LORD Almighty, |
the one great in counsel and powerful in action. Your eyes are on all the ways of the children of men in order to reward each person according to his ways and as the result of his actions. | 19great are your purposes and mighty are your deeds. Your eyes are open to the ways of all mankind; you reward each person according to their conduct and as their deeds deserve. |
You performed signs and wonders in the land of Egypt and still do today, both in Israel and among all mankind. You made a name for yourself, as is the case today. | 20You performed signs and wonders in Egypt and have continued them to this day, in Israel and among all mankind, and have gained the renown that is still yours. |
You brought your people Israel out of Egypt with signs and wonders, with a strong hand and an outstretched arm, and with great terror. | 21You brought your people Israel out of Egypt with signs and wonders, by a mighty hand and an outstretched arm and with great terror. |
You gave them this land you swore to give to their ancestors, a land flowing with milk and honey. | 22You gave them this land you had sworn to give their ancestors, a land flowing with milk and honey. |
They entered and possessed it, but they did not obey you or live according to your instructions. They failed to perform all you commanded them to do, and so you have brought all this disaster on them. | 23They came in and took possession of it, but they did not obey you or follow your law; they did not do what you commanded them to do. So you brought all this disaster on them. |
Look! Siege ramps have come against the city to capture it, and the city, as a result of the sword, famine, and plague, has been handed over to the Chaldeans who are fighting against it. What you have spoken has happened. Look, you can see it! | 24"See how the siege ramps are built up to take the city. Because of the sword, famine and plague, the city will be given into the hands of the Babylonians who are attacking it. What you said has happened, as you now see. |
Yet you, Lord GOD, have said to me, 'Purchase the field and call in witnesses'--even though the city has been handed over to the Chaldeans!" | 25And though the city will be given into the hands of the Babylonians, you, Sovereign LORD, say to me, 'Buy the field with silver and have the transaction witnessed.'" |
The word of the LORD came to Jeremiah: | 26Then the word of the LORD came to Jeremiah: |
"Look, I am the LORD, the God over every creature. Is anything too difficult for me? | 27"I am the LORD, the God of all mankind. Is anything too hard for me? |
Therefore, this is what the LORD says: I am about to hand this city over to the Chaldeans, to Babylon's king Nebuchadnezzar, and he will capture it. | 28Therefore this is what the LORD says: I am about to give this city into the hands of the Babylonians and to Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, who will capture it. |
The Chaldeans who are fighting against this city will come and set this city on fire. They will burn it, including the houses where incense has been burned to Baal on their rooftops and where drink offerings have been poured out to other gods to anger me. | 29The Babylonians who are attacking this city will come in and set it on fire; they will burn it down, along with the houses where the people aroused my anger by burning incense on the roofs to Baal and by pouring out drink offerings to other gods. |
From their youth, the Israelites and Judeans have done nothing but what is evil in my sight! They have done nothing but anger me by the work of their hands"--this is the LORD's declaration-- | 30"The people of Israel and Judah have done nothing but evil in my sight from their youth; indeed, the people of Israel have done nothing but arouse my anger with what their hands have made, declares the LORD. |
"for this city has caused my wrath and fury from the day it was built until now. I will therefore remove it from my presence | 31From the day it was built until now, this city has so aroused my anger and wrath that I must remove it from my sight. |
because of all the evil the Israelites and Judeans have done to anger me--they, their kings, their officials, their priests, and their prophets, the men of Judah, and the residents of Jerusalem. | 32The people of Israel and Judah have provoked me by all the evil they have done--they, their kings and officials, their priests and prophets, the people of Judah and those living in Jerusalem. |
They have turned their backs to me and not their faces. Though I taught them time and time again, they do not listen and receive discipline. | 33They turned their backs to me and not their faces; though I taught them again and again, they would not listen or respond to discipline. |
They have placed their abhorrent things in the house that bears my name and have defiled it. | 34They set up their vile images in the house that bears my Name and defiled it. |
They have built the high places of Baal in Ben Hinnom Valley to sacrifice their sons and daughters in the fire to Molech--something I had not commanded them. I had never entertained the thought that they do this detestable act causing Judah to sin! | 35They built high places for Baal in the Valley of Ben Hinnom to sacrifice their sons and daughters to Molek, though I never commanded--nor did it enter my mind--that they should do such a detestable thing and so make Judah sin. |
"Now therefore, this is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says to this city about which you said, 'It has been handed over to Babylon's king through sword, famine, and plague': | 36"You are saying about this city, 'By the sword, famine and plague it will be given into the hands of the king of Babylon'; but this is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: |
I will certainly gather them from all the lands where I have banished them in my anger, rage and intense wrath, and I will return them to this place and make them live in safety. | 37I will surely gather them from all the lands where I banish them in my furious anger and great wrath; I will bring them back to this place and let them live in safety. |
They will be my people, and I will be their God. | 38They will be my people, and I will be their God. |
I will give them integrity of heart and action so that they will fear me always, for their good and for the good of their descendants after them. | 39I will give them singleness of heart and action, so that they will always fear me and that all will then go well for them and for their children after them. |
"I will make a permanent covenant with them: I will never turn away from doing good to them, and I will put fear of me in their hearts so they will never again turn away from me. | 40I will make an everlasting covenant with them: I will never stop doing good to them, and I will inspire them to fear me, so that they will never turn away from me. |
I will take delight in them to do what is good for them, and with all my heart and mind I will faithfully plant them in this land. | 41I will rejoice in doing them good and will assuredly plant them in this land with all my heart and soul. |
"For this is what the LORD says: Just as I have brought all this terrible disaster on these people, so am I about to bring on them all the good I am promising them. | 42"This is what the LORD says: As I have brought all this great calamity on this people, so I will give them all the prosperity I have promised them. |
Fields will be bought in this land about which you are saying, 'It's a desolation without people or animals; it has been handed over to the Chaldeans!' | 43Once more fields will be bought in this land of which you say, 'It is a desolate waste, without people or animals, for it has been given into the hands of the Babylonians.' |
Fields will be purchased, the transaction written on a scroll and sealed, and witnesses will be called on in the land of Benjamin, in the areas surrounding Jerusalem, and in Judah's cities--the cities of the hill country, the cities of the Judean foothills, and the cities of the Negev--because I will restore their fortunes." This is the LORD's declaration. | 44Fields will be bought for silver, and deeds will be signed, sealed and witnessed in the territory of Benjamin, in the villages around Jerusalem, in the towns of Judah and in the towns of the hill country, of the western foothills and of the Negev, because I will restore their fortunes, declares the LORD." |
