English Standard Version | King James Bible |
“Man who is born of a woman is few of days and full of trouble. | 1Man that is born of a woman is of few days, and full of trouble. |
He comes out like a flower and withers; he flees like a shadow and continues not. | 2He cometh forth like a flower, and is cut down: he fleeth also as a shadow, and continueth not. |
And do you open your eyes on such a one and bring me into judgment with you? | 3And dost thou open thine eyes upon such an one, and bringest me into judgment with thee? |
Who can bring a clean thing out of an unclean? There is not one. | 4Who can bring a clean thing out of an unclean? not one. |
Since his days are determined, and the number of his months is with you, and you have appointed his limits that he cannot pass, | 5Seeing his days are determined, the number of his months are with thee, thou hast appointed his bounds that he cannot pass; |
look away from him and leave him alone, that he may enjoy, like a hired hand, his day. | 6Turn from him, that he may rest, till he shall accomplish, as an hireling, his day. |
“For there is hope for a tree, if it be cut down, that it will sprout again, and that its shoots will not cease. | 7For there is hope of a tree, if it be cut down, that it will sprout again, and that the tender branch thereof will not cease. |
Though its root grow old in the earth, and its stump die in the soil, | 8Though the root thereof wax old in the earth, and the stock thereof die in the ground; |
yet at the scent of water it will bud and put out branches like a young plant. | 9Yet through the scent of water it will bud, and bring forth boughs like a plant. |
But a man dies and is laid low; man breathes his last, and where is he? | 10But man dieth, and wasteth away: yea, man giveth up the ghost, and where is he? |
As waters fail from a lake and a river wastes away and dries up, | 11As the waters fail from the sea, and the flood decayeth and drieth up: |
so a man lies down and rises not again; till the heavens are no more he will not awake or be roused out of his sleep. | 12So man lieth down, and riseth not: till the heavens be no more, they shall not awake, nor be raised out of their sleep. |
Oh that you would hide me in Sheol, that you would conceal me until your wrath be past, that you would appoint me a set time, and remember me! | 13O that thou wouldest hide me in the grave, that thou wouldest keep me secret, until thy wrath be past, that thou wouldest appoint me a set time, and remember me! |
If a man dies, shall he live again? All the days of my service I would wait, till my renewal should come. | 14If a man die, shall he live again? all the days of my appointed time will I wait, till my change come. |
You would call, and I would answer you; you would long for the work of your hands. | 15Thou shalt call, and I will answer thee: thou wilt have a desire to the work of thine hands. |
For then you would number my steps; you would not keep watch over my sin; | 16For now thou numberest my steps: dost thou not watch over my sin? |
my transgression would be sealed up in a bag, and you would cover over my iniquity. | 17My transgression is sealed up in a bag, and thou sewest up mine iniquity. |
“But the mountain falls and crumbles away, and the rock is removed from its place; | 18And surely the mountain falling cometh to nought, and the rock is removed out of his place. |
the waters wear away the stones; the torrents wash away the soil of the earth; so you destroy the hope of man. | 19The waters wear the stones: thou washest away the things which grow out of the dust of the earth; and thou destroyest the hope of man. |
You prevail forever against him, and he passes; you change his countenance, and send him away. | 20Thou prevailest for ever against him, and he passeth: thou changest his countenance, and sendest him away. |
His sons come to honor, and he does not know it; they are brought low, and he perceives it not. | 21His sons come to honour, and he knoweth it not; and they are brought low, but he perceiveth it not of them. |
He feels only the pain of his own body, and he mourns only for himself.” | 22But his flesh upon him shall have pain, and his soul within him shall mourn. |
