Oh give thanks to the LORD, for he is good, for his steadfast love endures forever! | 1Oh give thanks to the LORD, for He is good, For His lovingkindness is everlasting. |
Let the redeemed of the LORD say so, whom he has redeemed from trouble | 2Let the redeemed of the LORD say so, Whom He has redeemed from the hand of the adversary |
and gathered in from the lands, from the east and from the west, from the north and from the south. | 3And gathered from the lands, From the east and from the west, From the north and from the south. |
Some wandered in desert wastes, finding no way to a city to dwell in; | 4They wandered in the wilderness in a desert region; They did not find a way to an inhabited city. |
hungry and thirsty, their soul fainted within them. | 5They were hungry and thirsty; Their soul fainted within them. |
Then they cried to the LORD in their trouble, and he delivered them from their distress. | 6Then they cried out to the LORD in their trouble; He delivered them out of their distresses. |
He led them by a straight way till they reached a city to dwell in. | 7He led them also by a straight way, To go to an inhabited city. |
Let them thank the LORD for his steadfast love, for his wondrous works to the children of man! | 8Let them give thanks to the LORD for His lovingkindness, And for His wonders to the sons of men! |
For he satisfies the longing soul, and the hungry soul he fills with good things. | 9For He has satisfied the thirsty soul, And the hungry soul He has filled with what is good. |
Some sat in darkness and in the shadow of death, prisoners in affliction and in irons, | 10There were those who dwelt in darkness and in the shadow of death, Prisoners in misery and chains, |
for they had rebelled against the words of God, and spurned the counsel of the Most High. | 11Because they had rebelled against the words of God And spurned the counsel of the Most High. |
So he bowed their hearts down with hard labor; they fell down, with none to help. | 12Therefore He humbled their heart with labor; They stumbled and there was none to help. |
Then they cried to the LORD in their trouble, and he delivered them from their distress. | 13Then they cried out to the LORD in their trouble; He saved them out of their distresses. |
He brought them out of darkness and the shadow of death, and burst their bonds apart. | 14He brought them out of darkness and the shadow of death And broke their bands apart. |
Let them thank the LORD for his steadfast love, for his wondrous works to the children of man! | 15Let them give thanks to the LORD for His lovingkindness, And for His wonders to the sons of men! |
For he shatters the doors of bronze and cuts in two the bars of iron. | 16For He has shattered gates of bronze And cut bars of iron asunder. |
Some were fools through their sinful ways, and because of their iniquities suffered affliction; | 17Fools, because of their rebellious way, And because of their iniquities, were afflicted. |
they loathed any kind of food, and they drew near to the gates of death. | 18Their soul abhorred all kinds of food, And they drew near to the gates of death. |
Then they cried to the LORD in their trouble, and he delivered them from their distress. | 19Then they cried out to the LORD in their trouble; He saved them out of their distresses. |
He sent out his word and healed them, and delivered them from their destruction. | 20He sent His word and healed them, And delivered them from their destructions. |
Let them thank the LORD for his steadfast love, for his wondrous works to the children of man! | 21Let them give thanks to the LORD for His lovingkindness, And for His wonders to the sons of men! |
And let them offer sacrifices of thanksgiving, and tell of his deeds in songs of joy! | 22Let them also offer sacrifices of thanksgiving, And tell of His works with joyful singing. |
Some went down to the sea in ships, doing business on the great waters; | 23Those who go down to the sea in ships, Who do business on great waters; |
they saw the deeds of the LORD, his wondrous works in the deep. | 24They have seen the works of the LORD, And His wonders in the deep. |
For he commanded and raised the stormy wind, which lifted up the waves of the sea. | 25For He spoke and raised up a stormy wind, Which lifted up the waves of the sea. |
They mounted up to heaven; they went down to the depths; their courage melted away in their evil plight; | 26They rose up to the heavens, they went down to the depths; Their soul melted away in their misery. |
they reeled and staggered like drunken men and were at their wits’ end. | 27They reeled and staggered like a drunken man, And were at their wits' end. |
Then they cried to the LORD in their trouble, and he delivered them from their distress. | 28Then they cried to the LORD in their trouble, And He brought them out of their distresses. |
He made the storm be still, and the waves of the sea were hushed. | 29He caused the storm to be still, So that the waves of the sea were hushed. |
Then they were glad that the waters were quiet, and he brought them to their desired haven. | 30Then they were glad because they were quiet, So He guided them to their desired haven. |
Let them thank the LORD for his steadfast love, for his wondrous works to the children of man! | 31Let them give thanks to the LORD for His lovingkindness, And for His wonders to the sons of men! |
Let them extol him in the congregation of the people, and praise him in the assembly of the elders. | 32Let them extol Him also in the congregation of the people, And praise Him at the seat of the elders. |
He turns rivers into a desert, springs of water into thirsty ground, | 33He changes rivers into a wilderness And springs of water into a thirsty ground; |
a fruitful land into a salty waste, because of the evil of its inhabitants. | 34A fruitful land into a salt waste, Because of the wickedness of those who dwell in it. |
He turns a desert into pools of water, a parched land into springs of water. | 35He changes a wilderness into a pool of water And a dry land into springs of water; |
And there he lets the hungry dwell, and they establish a city to live in; | 36And there He makes the hungry to dwell, So that they may establish an inhabited city, |
they sow fields and plant vineyards and get a fruitful yield. | 37And sow fields and plant vineyards, And gather a fruitful harvest. |
By his blessing they multiply greatly, and he does not let their livestock diminish. | 38Also He blesses them and they multiply greatly, And He does not let their cattle decrease. |
When they are diminished and brought low through oppression, evil, and sorrow, | 39When they are diminished and bowed down Through oppression, misery and sorrow, |
he pours contempt on princes and makes them wander in trackless wastes; | 40He pours contempt upon princes And makes them wander in a pathless waste. |
but he raises up the needy out of affliction and makes their families like flocks. | 41But He sets the needy securely on high away from affliction, And makes his families like a flock. |
The upright see it and are glad, and all wickedness shuts its mouth. | 42The upright see it and are glad; But all unrighteousness shuts its mouth. |
Whoever is wise, let him attend to these things; let them consider the steadfast love of the LORD. | 43Who is wise? Let him give heed to these things, And consider the lovingkindnesses of the LORD. |
