Since therefore Christ suffered in the flesh, arm yourselves with the same way of thinking, for whoever has suffered in the flesh has ceased from sin,1So, since Christ suffered in the flesh, you also arm yourselves with the same attitude, because the one who has suffered in the flesh has finished with sin,
so as to live for the rest of the time in the flesh no longer for human passions but for the will of God.2in that he spends the rest of his time on earth concerned about the will of God and not human desires.
For the time that is past suffices for doing what the Gentiles want to do, living in sensuality, passions, drunkenness, orgies, drinking parties, and lawless idolatry.3For the time that has passed was sufficient for you to do what the non-Christians desire. You lived then in debauchery, evil desires, drunkenness, carousing, drinking bouts, and wanton idolatries.
With respect to this they are surprised when you do not join them in the same flood of debauchery, and they malign you;4So they are astonished when you do not rush with them into the same flood of wickedness, and they vilify you.
but they will give account to him who is ready to judge the living and the dead.5They will face a reckoning before Jesus Christ who stands ready to judge the living and the dead.
For this is why the gospel was preached even to those who are dead, that though judged in the flesh the way people are, they might live in the spirit the way God does.6Now it was for this very purpose that the gospel was preached to those who are now dead, so that though they were judged in the flesh by human standards they may live spiritually by God's standards.
The end of all things is at hand; therefore be self-controlled and sober-minded for the sake of your prayers.7For the culmination of all things is near. So be self-controlled and sober-minded for the sake of prayer.
Above all, keep loving one another earnestly, since love covers a multitude of sins.8Above all keep your love for one another fervent, because love covers a multitude of sins.
Show hospitality to one another without grumbling.9Show hospitality to one another without complaining.
As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God’s varied grace:10Just as each one has received a gift, use it to serve one another as good stewards of the varied grace of God.
whoever speaks, as one who speaks oracles of God; whoever serves, as one who serves by the strength that God supplies—in order that in everything God may be glorified through Jesus Christ. To him belong glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen.11Whoever speaks, let it be with God's words. Whoever serves, do so with the strength that God supplies, so that in everything God will be glorified through Jesus Christ. To him belong the glory and the power forever and ever. Amen.
Beloved, do not be surprised at the fiery trial when it comes upon you to test you, as though something strange were happening to you.12Dear friends, do not be astonished that a trial by fire is occurring among you, as though something strange were happening to you.
But rejoice insofar as you share Christ’s sufferings, that you may also rejoice and be glad when his glory is revealed.13But rejoice in the degree that you have shared in the sufferings of Christ, so that when his glory is revealed you may also rejoice and be glad.
If you are insulted for the name of Christ, you are blessed, because the Spirit of glory and of God rests upon you.14If you are insulted for the name of Christ, you are blessed, because the Spirit of glory, who is the Spirit of God, rests on you.
But let none of you suffer as a murderer or a thief or an evildoer or as a meddler.15But let none of you suffer as a murderer or thief or criminal or as a troublemaker.
Yet if anyone suffers as a Christian, let him not be ashamed, but let him glorify God in that name.16But if you suffer as a Christian, do not be ashamed, but glorify God that you bear such a name.
For it is time for judgment to begin at the household of God; and if it begins with us, what will be the outcome for those who do not obey the gospel of God?17For it is time for judgment to begin, starting with the house of God. And if it starts with us, what will be the fate of those who are disobedient to the gospel of God?
And “If the righteous is scarcely saved, what will become of the ungodly and the sinner?”18And if the righteous are barely saved, what will become of the ungodly and sinners?
Therefore let those who suffer according to God’s will entrust their souls to a faithful Creator while doing good.19So then let those who suffer according to the will of God entrust their souls to a faithful Creator as they do good.
