Psalm 55
ESV Parallel NET [BSB CSB ESV HCS KJV ISV NAS NET NIV NLT HEB]
English Standard VersionNET Bible
Give ear to my prayer, O God, and hide not yourself from my plea for mercy!1For the music director, to be accompanied by stringed instruments; a well-written song by David. Listen, O God, to my prayer! Do not ignore my appeal for mercy!
Attend to me, and answer me; I am restless in my complaint and I moan,2Pay attention to me and answer me! I am so upset and distressed, I am beside myself,
because of the noise of the enemy, because of the oppression of the wicked. For they drop trouble upon me, and in anger they bear a grudge against me.3because of what the enemy says, and because of how the wicked pressure me, for they hurl trouble down upon me and angrily attack me.
My heart is in anguish within me; the terrors of death have fallen upon me.4My heart beats violently within me; the horrors of death overcome me.
Fear and trembling come upon me, and horror overwhelms me.5Fear and panic overpower me; terror overwhelms me.
And I say, “Oh, that I had wings like a dove! I would fly away and be at rest;6I say, "I wish I had wings like a dove! I would fly away and settle in a safe place!
yes, I would wander far away; I would lodge in the wilderness; Selah7Look, I will escape to a distant place; I will stay in the wilderness. (Selah)
I would hurry to find a shelter from the raging wind and tempest.”8I will hurry off to a place that is safe from the strong wind and the gale."
Destroy, O Lord, divide their tongues; for I see violence and strife in the city.9Confuse them, O Lord! Frustrate their plans! For I see violence and conflict in the city.
Day and night they go around it on its walls, and iniquity and trouble are within it;10Day and night they walk around on its walls, while wickedness and destruction are within it.
ruin is in its midst; oppression and fraud do not depart from its marketplace.11Disaster is within it; violence and deceit do not depart from its public square.
For it is not an enemy who taunts me— then I could bear it; it is not an adversary who deals insolently with me— then I could hide from him.12Indeed, it is not an enemy who insults me, or else I could bear it; it is not one who hates me who arrogantly taunts me, or else I could hide from him.
But it is you, a man, my equal, my companion, my familiar friend.13But it is you, a man like me, my close friend in whom I confided.
We used to take sweet counsel together; within God’s house we walked in the throng.14We would share personal thoughts with each other; in God's temple we would walk together among the crowd.
Let death steal over them; let them go down to Sheol alive; for evil is in their dwelling place and in their heart.15May death destroy them! May they go down alive into Sheol! For evil is in their dwelling place and in their midst.
But I call to God, and the LORD will save me.16As for me, I will call out to God, and the LORD will deliver me.
Evening and morning and at noon I utter my complaint and moan, and he hears my voice.17During the evening, morning, and noontime I will lament and moan, and he will hear me.
He redeems my soul in safety from the battle that I wage, for many are arrayed against me.18He will rescue me and protect me from those who attack me, even though they greatly outnumber me.
God will give ear and humble them, he who is enthroned from of old, Selah because they do not change and do not fear God.19God, the one who has reigned as king from long ago, will hear and humiliate them. (Selah) They refuse to change, and do not fear God.
My companion stretched out his hand against his friends; he violated his covenant.20He attacks his friends; he breaks his solemn promises to them.
His speech was smooth as butter, yet war was in his heart; his words were softer than oil, yet they were drawn swords.21His words are as smooth as butter, but he harbors animosity in his heart. His words seem softer than oil, but they are really like sharp swords.
Cast your burden on the LORD, and he will sustain you; he will never permit the righteous to be moved.22Throw your burden upon the LORD, and he will sustain you. He will never allow the godly to be upended.
But you, O God, will cast them down into the pit of destruction; men of blood and treachery shall not live out half their days. But I will trust in you.23But you, O God, will bring them down to the deep Pit. Violent and deceitful people will not live even half a normal lifespan. But as for me, I trust in you.
