English Standard Version | New Living Translation |
For behold, the Lord GOD of hosts is taking away from Jerusalem and from Judah support and supply, all support of bread, and all support of water; | 1The Lord, the LORD of Heaven’s Armies, will take away from Jerusalem and Judah everything they depend on: every bit of bread and every drop of water, |
the mighty man and the soldier, the judge and the prophet, the diviner and the elder, | 2all their heroes and soldiers, judges and prophets, fortune-tellers and elders, |
the captain of fifty and the man of rank, the counselor and the skillful magician and the expert in charms. | 3army officers and high officials, advisers, skilled sorcerers, and astrologers. |
And I will make boys their princes, and infants shall rule over them. | 4I will make boys their leaders, and toddlers their rulers. |
And the people will oppress one another, every one his fellow and every one his neighbor; the youth will be insolent to the elder, and the despised to the honorable. | 5People will oppress each other— man against man, neighbor against neighbor. Young people will insult their elders, and vulgar people will sneer at the honorable. |
For a man will take hold of his brother in the house of his father, saying: “You have a cloak; you shall be our leader, and this heap of ruins shall be under your rule”; | 6In those days a man will say to his brother, “Since you have a coat, you be our leader! Take charge of this heap of ruins!” |
in that day he will speak out, saying: “I will not be a healer; in my house there is neither bread nor cloak; you shall not make me leader of the people.” | 7But he will reply, “No! I can’t help. I don’t have any extra food or clothes. Don’t put me in charge!” |
For Jerusalem has stumbled, and Judah has fallen, because their speech and their deeds are against the LORD, defying his glorious presence. | 8For Jerusalem will stumble, and Judah will fall, because they speak out against the LORD and refuse to obey him. They provoke him to his face. |
For the look on their faces bears witness against them; they proclaim their sin like Sodom; they do not hide it. Woe to them! For they have brought evil on themselves. | 9The very look on their faces gives them away. They display their sin like the people of Sodom and don’t even try to hide it. They are doomed! They have brought destruction upon themselves. |
Tell the righteous that it shall be well with them, for they shall eat the fruit of their deeds. | 10Tell the godly that all will be well for them. They will enjoy the rich reward they have earned! |
Woe to the wicked! It shall be ill with him, for what his hands have dealt out shall be done to him. | 11But the wicked are doomed, for they will get exactly what they deserve. |
My people—infants are their oppressors, and women rule over them. O my people, your guides mislead you and they have swallowed up the course of your paths. | 12Childish leaders oppress my people, and women rule over them. O my people, your leaders mislead you; they send you down the wrong road. |
The LORD has taken his place to contend; he stands to judge peoples. | 13The LORD takes his place in court and presents his case against his people. |
The LORD will enter into judgment with the elders and princes of his people: “It is you who have devoured the vineyard, the spoil of the poor is in your houses. | 14The LORD comes forward to pronounce judgment on the elders and rulers of his people: “You have ruined Israel, my vineyard. Your houses are filled with things stolen from the poor. |
What do you mean by crushing my people, by grinding the face of the poor?” declares the Lord GOD of hosts. | 15How dare you crush my people, grinding the faces of the poor into the dust?” demands the Lord, the LORD of Heaven’s Armies. A Warning to Jerusalem |
The LORD said: Because the daughters of Zion are haughty and walk with outstretched necks, glancing wantonly with their eyes, mincing along as they go, tinkling with their feet, | 16The LORD says, “Beautiful Zion is haughty: craning her elegant neck, flirting with her eyes, walking with dainty steps, tinkling her ankle bracelets. |
therefore the Lord will strike with a scab the heads of the daughters of Zion, and the LORD will lay bare their secret parts. | 17So the Lord will send scabs on her head; the LORD will make beautiful Zion bald.” |
In that day the Lord will take away the finery of the anklets, the headbands, and the crescents; | 18On that day of judgment the Lord will strip away everything that makes her beautiful: ornaments, headbands, crescent necklaces, |
the pendants, the bracelets, and the scarves; | 19earrings, bracelets, and veils; |
the headdresses, the armlets, the sashes, the perfume boxes, and the amulets; | 20scarves, ankle bracelets, sashes, perfumes, and charms; |
the signet rings and nose rings; | 21rings, jewels, |
the festal robes, the mantles, the cloaks, and the handbags; | 22party clothes, gowns, capes, and purses; |
the mirrors, the linen garments, the turbans, and the veils. | 23mirrors, fine linen garments, head ornaments, and shawls. |
Instead of perfume there will be rottenness; and instead of a belt, a rope; and instead of well-set hair, baldness; and instead of a rich robe, a skirt of sackcloth; and branding instead of beauty. | 24Instead of smelling of sweet perfume, she will stink. She will wear a rope for a sash, and her elegant hair will fall out. She will wear rough burlap instead of rich robes. Shame will replace her beauty. |
Your men shall fall by the sword and your mighty men in battle. | 25The men of the city will be killed with the sword, and her warriors will die in battle. |
And her gates shall lament and mourn; empty, she shall sit on the ground. | 26The gates of Zion will weep and mourn. The city will be like a ravaged woman, huddled on the ground. |
