Holman Christian Standard BibleEnglish Standard Version
When they approached Jerusalem and came to Bethphage at the Mount of Olives, Jesus then sent two disciples, 1Now when they drew near to Jerusalem and came to Bethphage, to the Mount of Olives, then Jesus sent two disciples,
telling them, "Go into the village ahead of you. At once you will find a donkey tied there, and a colt with her. Untie them and bring them to Me. 2saying to them, “Go into the village in front of you, and immediately you will find a donkey tied, and a colt with her. Untie them and bring them to me.
If anyone says anything to you, you should say that the Lord needs them, and immediately he will send them." 3If anyone says anything to you, you shall say, ‘The Lord needs them,’ and he will send them at once.”
This took place so that what was spoken through the prophet might be fulfilled: 4This took place to fulfill what was spoken by the prophet, saying,
Tell Daughter Zion, "Look, your King is coming to you, gentle, and mounted on a donkey, even on a colt, the foal of a beast of burden." 5“Say to the daughter of Zion, ‘Behold, your king is coming to you, humble, and mounted on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a beast of burden.’”
The disciples went and did just as Jesus directed them. 6The disciples went and did as Jesus had directed them.
They brought the donkey and the colt; then they laid their robes on them, and He sat on them. 7They brought the donkey and the colt and put on them their cloaks, and he sat on them.
A very large crowd spread their robes on the road; others were cutting branches from the trees and spreading them on the road. 8Most of the crowd spread their cloaks on the road, and others cut branches from the trees and spread them on the road.
Then the crowds who went ahead of Him and those who followed kept shouting: Hosanna to the Son of David! He who comes in the name of the Lord is the blessed One! Hosanna in the highest heaven! 9And the crowds that went before him and that followed him were shouting, “Hosanna to the Son of David! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna in the highest!”
When He entered Jerusalem, the whole city was shaken, saying, "Who is this?"10And when he entered Jerusalem, the whole city was stirred up, saying, “Who is this?”
And the crowds kept saying, "This is the prophet Jesus from Nazareth in Galilee!" 11And the crowds said, “This is the prophet Jesus, from Nazareth of Galilee.”
Jesus went into the temple complex and drove out all those buying and selling in the temple. He overturned the money changers' tables and the chairs of those selling doves.12And Jesus entered the temple and drove out all who sold and bought in the temple, and he overturned the tables of the money-changers and the seats of those who sold pigeons.
And He said to them, "It is written, My house will be called a house of prayer. But you are making it a den of thieves!" 13He said to them, “It is written, ‘My house shall be called a house of prayer,’ but you make it a den of robbers.”
The blind and the lame came to Him in the temple complex, and He healed them. 14And the blind and the lame came to him in the temple, and he healed them.
When the chief priests and the scribes saw the wonders that He did and the children shouting in the temple complex, "Hosanna to the Son of David!" they were indignant15But when the chief priests and the scribes saw the wonderful things that he did, and the children crying out in the temple, “Hosanna to the Son of David!” they were indignant,
and said to Him, "Do You hear what these children are saying?" "Yes," Jesus told them. "Have you never read: You have prepared praise from the mouths of children and nursing infants?" 16and they said to him, “Do you hear what these are saying?” And Jesus said to them, “Yes; have you never read, “‘Out of the mouth of infants and nursing babies you have prepared praise’?”
Then He left them, went out of the city to Bethany, and spent the night there. 17And leaving them, he went out of the city to Bethany and lodged there.
Early in the morning, as He was returning to the city, He was hungry. 18In the morning, as he was returning to the city, he became hungry.
Seeing a lone fig tree by the road, He went up to it and found nothing on it except leaves. And He said to it, "May no fruit ever come from you again!" At once the fig tree withered. 19And seeing a fig tree by the wayside, he went to it and found nothing on it but only leaves. And he said to it, “May no fruit ever come from you again!” And the fig tree withered at once.
When the disciples saw it, they were amazed and said, "How did the fig tree wither so quickly?" 20When the disciples saw it, they marveled, saying, “How did the fig tree wither at once?”
Jesus answered them, "I assure you: If you have faith and do not doubt, you will not only do what was done to the fig tree, but even if you tell this mountain, Be lifted up and thrown into the sea,' it will be done.21And Jesus answered them, “Truly, I say to you, if you have faith and do not doubt, you will not only do what has been done to the fig tree, but even if you say to this mountain, ‘Be taken up and thrown into the sea,’ it will happen.
And if you believe, you will receive whatever you ask for in prayer." 22And whatever you ask in prayer, you will receive, if you have faith.”
When He entered the temple complex, the chief priests and the elders of the people came up to Him as He was teaching and said, "By what authority are You doing these things? Who gave You this authority?" 23And when he entered the temple, the chief priests and the elders of the people came up to him as he was teaching, and said, “By what authority are you doing these things, and who gave you this authority?”
Jesus answered them, "I will also ask you one question, and if you answer it for Me, then I will tell you by what authority I do these things.24Jesus answered them, “I also will ask you one question, and if you tell me the answer, then I also will tell you by what authority I do these things.
Where did John's baptism come from? From heaven or from men?" They began to argue among themselves, "If we say, 'From heaven,' He will say to us, 'Then why didn't you believe him?'25The baptism of John, from where did it come? From heaven or from man?” And they discussed it among themselves, saying, “If we say, ‘From heaven,’ he will say to us, ‘Why then did you not believe him?’
But if we say, 'From men,' we're afraid of the crowd, because everyone thought John was a prophet."26But if we say, ‘From man,’ we are afraid of the crowd, for they all hold that John was a prophet.”
So they answered Jesus, "We don't know." And He said to them, "Neither will I tell you by what authority I do these things. 27So they answered Jesus, “We do not know.” And he said to them, “Neither will I tell you by what authority I do these things.
"But what do you think? A man had two sons. He went to the first and said, My son, go, work in the vineyard today.' 28“What do you think? A man had two sons. And he went to the first and said, ‘Son, go and work in the vineyard today.’
"He answered, I don't want to!' Yet later he changed his mind and went. 29And he answered, ‘I will not,’ but afterward he changed his mind and went.
Then the man went to the other and said the same thing. "'I will, sir,' he answered. But he didn't go. 30And he went to the other son and said the same. And he answered, ‘I go, sir,’ but did not go.
"Which of the two did his father's will?"" The first," they said. Jesus said to them, "I assure you: Tax collectors and prostitutes are entering the kingdom of God before you! 31Which of the two did the will of his father?” They said, “The first.” Jesus said to them, “Truly, I say to you, the tax collectors and the prostitutes go into the kingdom of God before you.
For John came to you in the way of righteousness, and you didn't believe him. Tax collectors and prostitutes did believe him, but you, when you saw it, didn't even change your minds then and believe him. 32For John came to you in the way of righteousness, and you did not believe him, but the tax collectors and the prostitutes believed him. And even when you saw it, you did not afterward change your minds and believe him.
"Listen to another parable: There was a man, a landowner, who planted a vineyard, put a fence around it, dug a winepress in it, and built a watchtower. He leased it to tenant farmers and went away.33“Hear another parable. There was a master of a house who planted a vineyard and put a fence around it and dug a winepress in it and built a tower and leased it to tenants, and went into another country.
When the grape harvest drew near, he sent his slaves to the farmers to collect his fruit. 34When the season for fruit drew near, he sent his servants to the tenants to get his fruit.
But the farmers took his slaves, beat one, killed another, and stoned a third.35And the tenants took his servants and beat one, killed another, and stoned another.
Again, he sent other slaves, more than the first group, and they did the same to them. 36Again he sent other servants, more than the first. And they did the same to them.
Finally, he sent his son to them. They will respect my son,' he said. 37Finally he sent his son to them, saying, ‘They will respect my son.’
"But when the tenant farmers saw the son, they said among themselves, This is the heir. Come, let's kill him and take his inheritance!'38But when the tenants saw the son, they said to themselves, ‘This is the heir. Come, let us kill him and have his inheritance.’
So they seized him, threw him out of the vineyard, and killed him.39And they took him and threw him out of the vineyard and killed him.
Therefore, when the owner of the vineyard comes, what will he do to those farmers?"" 40When therefore the owner of the vineyard comes, what will he do to those tenants?”
He will completely destroy those terrible men," they told Him, "and lease his vineyard to other farmers who will give him his produce at the harvest." 41They said to him, “He will put those wretches to a miserable death and let out the vineyard to other tenants who will give him the fruits in their seasons.”
Jesus said to them, "Have you never read in the Scriptures: The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone. This came from the Lord and is wonderful in our eyes? 42Jesus said to them, “Have you never read in the Scriptures: “‘The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone; this was the Lord’s doing, and it is marvelous in our eyes’?
Therefore I tell you, the kingdom of God will be taken away from you and given to a nation producing its fruit. 43Therefore I tell you, the kingdom of God will be taken away from you and given to a people producing its fruits.
Whoever falls on this stone will be broken to pieces; but on whoever it falls, it will grind him to powder!" 44And the one who falls on this stone will be broken to pieces; and when it falls on anyone, it will crush him.”
When the chief priests and the Pharisees heard His parables, they knew He was speaking about them. 45When the chief priests and the Pharisees heard his parables, they perceived that he was speaking about them.
Although they were looking for a way to arrest Him, they feared the crowds, because they regarded Him as a prophet. 46And although they were seeking to arrest him, they feared the crowds, because they held him to be a prophet.
