Holman Christian Standard Bible | New American Standard Bible 1995 |
"Do not judge, so that you won't be judged. | 1"Do not judge so that you will not be judged. |
For with the judgment you use, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you. | 2"For in the way you judge, you will be judged; and by your standard of measure, it will be measured to you. |
Why do you look at the speck in your brother's eye but don't notice the log in your own eye? | 3"Why do you look at the speck that is in your brother's eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye? |
Or how can you say to your brother, Let me take the speck out of your eye,' and look, there's a log in your eye? | 4"Or how can you say to your brother, 'Let me take the speck out of your eye,' and behold, the log is in your own eye? |
Hypocrite! First take the log out of your eye, and then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your brother's eye. | 5"You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your brother's eye. |
Don't give what is holy to dogs or toss your pearls before pigs, or they will trample them with their feet, turn, and tear you to pieces. | 6"Do not give what is holy to dogs, and do not throw your pearls before swine, or they will trample them under their feet, and turn and tear you to pieces. |
"Keep asking, and it will be given to you. Keep searching, and you will find. Keep knocking, and the door will be opened to you. | 7"Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. |
For everyone who asks receives, and the one who searches finds, and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened. | 8"For everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened. |
What man among you, if his son asks him for bread, will give him a stone? | 9"Or what man is there among you who, when his son asks for a loaf, will give him a stone? |
Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a snake? | 10"Or if he asks for a fish, he will not give him a snake, will he? |
If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good things to those who ask Him! | 11"If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give what is good to those who ask Him! |
Therefore, whatever you want others to do for you, do also the same for them--this is the Law and the Prophets. | 12"In everything, therefore, treat people the same way you want them to treat you, for this is the Law and the Prophets. |
"Enter through the narrow gate. For the gate is wide and the road is broad that leads to destruction, and there are many who go through it. | 13"Enter through the narrow gate; for the gate is wide and the way is broad that leads to destruction, and there are many who enter through it. |
How narrow is the gate and difficult the road that leads to life, and few find it. | 14"For the gate is small and the way is narrow that leads to life, and there are few who find it. |
"Beware of false prophets who come to you in sheep's clothing but inwardly are ravaging wolves. | 15"Beware of the false prophets, who come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly are ravenous wolves. |
You'll recognize them by their fruit. Are grapes gathered from thornbushes or figs from thistles? | 16"You will know them by their fruits. Grapes are not gathered from thorn bushes nor figs from thistles, are they? |
In the same way, every good tree produces good fruit, but a bad tree produces bad fruit. | 17"So every good tree bears good fruit, but the bad tree bears bad fruit. |
A good tree can't produce bad fruit; neither can a bad tree produce good fruit. | 18"A good tree cannot produce bad fruit, nor can a bad tree produce good fruit. |
Every tree that doesn't produce good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. | 19"Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. |
So you'll recognize them by their fruit. | 20"So then, you will know them by their fruits. |
"Not everyone who says to Me, Lord, Lord!' will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of My Father in heaven. | 21"Not everyone who says to Me, 'Lord, Lord,' will enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father who is in heaven will enter. |
On that day many will say to Me, Lord, Lord, didn't we prophesy in Your name, drive out demons in Your name, and do many miracles in Your name?' | 22"Many will say to Me on that day, 'Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in Your name, and in Your name cast out demons, and in Your name perform many miracles?' |
Then I will announce to them, I never knew you! Depart from Me, you lawbreakers!' | 23"And then I will declare to them, 'I never knew you; DEPART FROM ME, YOU WHO PRACTICE LAWLESSNESS.' |
"Therefore, everyone who hears these words of Mine and acts on them will be like a sensible man who built his house on the rock. | 24"Therefore everyone who hears these words of Mine and acts on them, may be compared to a wise man who built his house on the rock. |
The rain fell, the rivers rose, and the winds blew and pounded that house. Yet it didn't collapse, because its foundation was on the rock. | 25"And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and slammed against that house; and yet it did not fall, for it had been founded on the rock. |
But everyone who hears these words of Mine and doesn't act on them will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand. | 26"Everyone who hears these words of Mine and does not act on them, will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand. |
The rain fell, the rivers rose, the winds blew and pounded that house, and it collapsed. And its collapse was great!" | 27"The rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and slammed against that house; and it fell-- and great was its fall." |
When Jesus had finished this sermon, the crowds were astonished at His teaching, | 28When Jesus had finished these words, the crowds were amazed at His teaching; |
because He was teaching them like one who had authority, and not like their scribes. | 29for He was teaching them as one having authority, and not as their scribes. |
