The Pharisees and some of the scribes who had come from Jerusalem gathered around Him. 1Now the Pharisees and some of the experts in the law who came from Jerusalem gathered around him.
They observed that some of His disciples were eating their bread with unclean--that is, unwashed--hands. 2And they saw that some of Jesus' disciples ate their bread with unclean hands, that is, unwashed.
(For the Pharisees, in fact all the Jews, will not eat unless they wash their hands ritually, keeping the tradition of the elders. 3(For the Pharisees and all the Jews do not eat unless they perform a ritual washing, holding fast to the tradition of the elders.
When they come from the marketplace, they do not eat unless they have washed. And there are many other customs they have received and keep, like the washing of cups, jugs, copper utensils, and dining couches.)4And when they come from the marketplace, they do not eat unless they wash. They hold fast to many other traditions: the washing of cups, pots, kettles, and dining couches.)
Then the Pharisees and the scribes asked Him, "Why don't Your disciples live according to the tradition of the elders, instead of eating bread with ritually unclean hands?" 5The Pharisees and the experts in the law asked him, "Why do your disciples not live according to the tradition of the elders, but eat with unwashed hands?"
He answered them, "Isaiah prophesied correctly about you hypocrites, as it is written: These people honor Me with their lips, but their heart is far from Me. 6He said to them, "Isaiah prophesied correctly about you hypocrites, as it is written: 'This people honors me with their lips, but their heart is far from me.
They worship Me in vain, teaching as doctrines the commands of men. 7They worship me in vain, teaching as doctrine the commandments of men.'
Disregarding the command of God, you keep the tradition of men."8Having no regard for the command of God, you hold fast to human tradition."
He also said to them, "You completely invalidate God's command in order to maintain your tradition! 9He also said to them, "You neatly reject the commandment of God in order to set up your tradition.
For Moses said: Honor your father and your mother; and Whoever speaks evil of father or mother must be put to death. 10For Moses said, 'Honor your father and your mother,' and, 'Whoever insults his father or mother must be put to death.'
But you say, If a man tells his father or mother: Whatever benefit you might have received from me is Corban" (that is, a gift committed to the temple), 11But you say that if anyone tells his father or mother, 'Whatever help you would have received from me is corban' (that is, a gift for God),
"you no longer let him do anything for his father or mother. 12then you no longer permit him to do anything for his father or mother.
You revoke God's word by your tradition that you have handed down. And you do many other similar things."13Thus you nullify the word of God by your tradition that you have handed down. And you do many things like this."
Summoning the crowd again, He told them, "Listen to Me, all of you, and understand:14Then he called the crowd again and said to them, "Listen to me, everyone, and understand.
Nothing that goes into a person from outside can defile him, but the things that come out of a person are what defile him. 15There is nothing outside of a person that can defile him by going into him. Rather, it is what comes out of a person that defiles him."
If anyone has ears to hear, he should listen!" 16
When He went into the house away from the crowd, the disciples asked Him about the parable. 17Now when Jesus had left the crowd and entered the house, his disciples asked him about the parable.
And He said to them, "Are you also as lacking in understanding? Don't you realize that nothing going into a man from the outside can defile him? 18He said to them, "Are you so foolish? Don't you understand that whatever goes into a person from outside cannot defile him?
For it doesn't go into his heart but into the stomach and is eliminated." (As a result, He made all foods clean.)19For it does not enter his heart but his stomach, and then goes out into the sewer." (This means all foods are clean.)
Then He said, "What comes out of a person--that defiles him. 20He said, "What comes out of a person defiles him.
For from within, out of people's hearts, come evil thoughts, sexual immoralities, thefts, murders,21For from within, out of the human heart, come evil ideas, sexual immorality, theft, murder,
adulteries, greed, evil actions, deceit, promiscuity, stinginess, blasphemy, pride, and foolishness.22adultery, greed, evil, deceit, debauchery, envy, slander, pride, and folly.
All these evil things come from within and defile a person." 23All these evils come from within and defile a person."
He got up and departed from there to the region of Tyre and Sidon. He entered a house and did not want anyone to know it, but He could not escape notice. 24After Jesus left there, he went to the region of Tyre. When he went into a house, he did not want anyone to know, but he was not able to escape notice.
Instead, immediately after hearing about Him, a woman whose little daughter had an unclean spirit came and fell at His feet.25Instead, a woman whose young daughter had an unclean spirit immediately heard about him and came and fell at his feet.
Now the woman was Greek, a Syrophoenician by birth, and she kept asking Him to drive the demon out of her daughter. 26The woman was a Greek, of Syrophoenician origin. She asked him to cast the demon out of her daughter.
He said to her, "Allow the children to be satisfied first, because it isn't right to take the children's bread and throw it to the dogs." 27He said to her, "Let the children be satisfied first, for it is not right to take the children's bread and to throw it to the dogs."
But she replied to Him, "Lord, even the dogs under the table eat the children's crumbs." 28She answered, "Yes, Lord, but even the dogs under the table eat the children's crumbs."
Then He told her, "Because of this reply, you may go. The demon has gone out of your daughter."29Then he said to her, "Because you said this, you may go. The demon has left your daughter."
When she went back to her home, she found her child lying on the bed, and the demon was gone. 30She went home and found the child lying on the bed, and the demon gone.
Again, leaving the region of Tyre, He went by way of Sidon to the Sea of Galilee, through the region of the Decapolis.31Then Jesus went out again from the region of Tyre and came through Sidon to the Sea of Galilee in the region of the Decapolis.
They brought to Him a deaf man who also had a speech difficulty, and begged Jesus to lay His hand on him. 32They brought to him a deaf man who had difficulty speaking, and they asked him to place his hands on him.
So He took him away from the crowd privately. After putting His fingers in the man's ears and spitting, He touched his tongue. 33After Jesus took him aside privately, away from the crowd, he put his fingers in the man's ears, and after spitting, he touched his tongue.
Then, looking up to heaven, He sighed deeply and said to him, "Ephphatha!" (that is, "Be opened!").34Then he looked up to heaven and said with a sigh, "Ephphatha" (that is, "Be opened").
Immediately his ears were opened, his speech difficulty was removed, and he began to speak clearly.35And immediately the man's ears were opened, his tongue loosened, and he spoke plainly.
Then He ordered them to tell no one, but the more He would order them, the more they would proclaim it. 36Jesus ordered them not to tell anything. But as much as he ordered them not to do this, they proclaimed it all the more.
They were extremely astonished and said, "He has done everything well! He even makes deaf people hear, and people unable to speak, talk!" 37People were completely astounded and said, "He has done everything well. He even makes the deaf hear and the mute speak."
