Holman Christian Standard Bible | New International Version |
For the choir director: according to "The Lilies." Davidic. Save me, God, for the water has risen to my neck. | 1For the director of music. To the tune of "Lilies." Of David. Save me, O God, for the waters have come up to my neck. |
I have sunk in deep mud, and there is no footing; I have come into deep waters, and a flood sweeps over me. | 2I sink in the miry depths, where there is no foothold. I have come into the deep waters; the floods engulf me. |
I am weary from my crying; my throat is parched. My eyes fail, looking for my God. | 3I am worn out calling for help; my throat is parched. My eyes fail, looking for my God. |
Those who hate me without cause are more numerous than the hairs of my head; my deceitful enemies, who would destroy me, are powerful. Though I did not steal, I must repay. | 4Those who hate me without reason outnumber the hairs of my head; many are my enemies without cause, those who seek to destroy me. I am forced to restore what I did not steal. |
God, You know my foolishness, and my guilty acts are not hidden from You. | 5You, God, know my folly; my guilt is not hidden from you. |
Do not let those who put their hope in You be disgraced because of me, Lord GOD of Hosts; do not let those who seek You be humiliated because of me, God of Israel. | 6Lord, the LORD Almighty, may those who hope in you not be disgraced because of me; God of Israel, may those who seek you not be put to shame because of me. |
For I have endured insults because of You, and shame has covered my face. | 7For I endure scorn for your sake, and shame covers my face. |
I have become a stranger to my brothers and a foreigner to my mother's sons | 8I am a foreigner to my own family, a stranger to my own mother's children; |
because zeal for Your house has consumed me, and the insults of those who insult You have fallen on me. | 9for zeal for your house consumes me, and the insults of those who insult you fall on me. |
I mourned and fasted, but it brought me insults. | 10When I weep and fast, I must endure scorn; |
I wore sackcloth as my clothing, and I was a joke to them. | 11when I put on sackcloth, people make sport of me. |
Those who sit at the city gate talk about me, and drunkards make up songs about me. | 12Those who sit at the gate mock me, and I am the song of the drunkards. |
But as for me, LORD, my prayer to You is for a time of favor. In Your abundant, faithful love, God, answer me with Your sure salvation. | 13But I pray to you, LORD, in the time of your favor; in your great love, O God, answer me with your sure salvation. |
Rescue me from the miry mud; don't let me sink. Let me be rescued from those who hate me and from the deep waters. | 14Rescue me from the mire, do not let me sink; deliver me from those who hate me, from the deep waters. |
Don't let the floodwaters sweep over me or the deep swallow me up; don't let the Pit close its mouth over me. | 15Do not let the floodwaters engulf me or the depths swallow me up or the pit close its mouth over me. |
Answer me, LORD, for Your faithful love is good; in keeping with Your great compassion, turn to me. | 16Answer me, LORD, out of the goodness of your love; in your great mercy turn to me. |
Don't hide Your face from Your servant, for I am in distress. Answer me quickly! | 17Do not hide your face from your servant; answer me quickly, for I am in trouble. |
Draw near to me and redeem me; ransom me because of my enemies. | 18Come near and rescue me; deliver me because of my foes. |
You know the insults I endure-- my shame and disgrace. You are aware of all my adversaries. | 19You know how I am scorned, disgraced and shamed; all my enemies are before you. |
Insults have broken my heart, and I am in despair. I waited for sympathy, but there was none; for comforters, but found no one. | 20Scorn has broken my heart and has left me helpless; I looked for sympathy, but there was none, for comforters, but I found none. |
Instead, they gave me gall for my food, and for my thirst they gave me vinegar to drink. | 21They put gall in my food and gave me vinegar for my thirst. |
Let their table set before them be a snare, and let it be a trap for their allies. | 22May the table set before them become a snare; may it become retribution and a trap. |
Let their eyes grow too dim to see, and let their loins continually shake. | 23May their eyes be darkened so they cannot see, and their backs be bent forever. |
Pour out Your rage on them, and let Your burning anger overtake them. | 24Pour out your wrath on them; let your fierce anger overtake them. |
Make their fortification desolate; may no one live in their tents. | 25May their place be deserted; let there be no one to dwell in their tents. |
For they persecute the one You struck and talk about the pain of those You wounded. | 26For they persecute those you wound and talk about the pain of those you hurt. |
Add guilt to their guilt; do not let them share in Your righteousness. | 27Charge them with crime upon crime; do not let them share in your salvation. |
Let them be erased from the book of life and not be recorded with the righteous. | 28May they be blotted out of the book of life and not be listed with the righteous. |
But as for me--poor and in pain-- let Your salvation protect me, God. | 29But as for me, afflicted and in pain-- may your salvation, God, protect me. |
I will praise God's name with song and exalt Him with thanksgiving. | 30I will praise God's name in song and glorify him with thanksgiving. |
That will please Yahweh more than an ox, more than a bull with horns and hooves. | 31This will please the LORD more than an ox, more than a bull with its horns and hooves. |
The humble will see it and rejoice. You who seek God, take heart! | 32The poor will see and be glad-- you who seek God, may your hearts live! |
For the LORD listens to the needy and does not despise His own who are prisoners. | 33The LORD hears the needy and does not despise his captive people. |
Let heaven and earth praise Him, the seas and everything that moves in them, | 34Let heaven and earth praise him, the seas and all that move in them, |
for God will save Zion and build up the cities of Judah. They will live there and possess it. | 35for God will save Zion and rebuild the cities of Judah. Then people will settle there and possess it; |
The descendants of His servants will inherit it, and those who love His name will live in it. | 36the children of his servants will inherit it, and those who love his name will dwell there. |
