Now the apostles and the brothers who were in Judea heard that the gentiles had also accepted the word of God. | 1The apostles and the brothers and sisters who were throughout Judea heard that the Gentiles had also received the word of God. |
But when Peter went up to Jerusalem, those who emphasized circumcision disagreed with him. | 2When Peter went up to Jerusalem, the circumcision party criticized him, |
They said, "You went to uncircumcised men and ate with them!" | 3saying, "You went to uncircumcised men and ate with them." |
Then Peter began to explain to them point by point what had happened. He said, | 4Peter began to explain to them step by step: |
"I was in the town of Joppa praying when in a trance I saw a vision: Something like a large linen sheet descended down from heaven, lowered by its four corners, and it came right down to me. | 5"I was in the town of Joppa praying, and I saw, in a trance, an object that resembled a large sheet coming down, being lowered by its four corners from heaven, and it came to me. |
When I examined it closely, I saw four-footed animals of the earth, wild animals, reptiles, and birds of the air. | 6When I looked closely and considered it, I saw the four-footed animals of the earth, the wild beasts, the reptiles, and the birds of the sky. |
I also heard a voice telling me, 'Get up, Peter! Kill something and eat it.' | 7I also heard a voice telling me, 'Get up, Peter; kill and eat.' |
But I replied, 'Absolutely not, Lord, for nothing common or unclean has ever entered my mouth!' | 8"'No, Lord!' I said. 'For nothing impure or ritually unclean has ever entered my mouth.' |
Then the voice from heaven answered a second time, 'You must stop calling common what God has made clean!' | 9But a voice answered from heaven a second time, 'What God has made clean, you must not call impure.' |
This happened three times. Then everything was pulled back up to heaven. | 10"Now this happened three times, and everything was drawn up again into heaven. |
"At that very moment three men arrived at the house where we were staying. They had been sent to me from Caesarea. | 11At that very moment, three men who had been sent to me from Caesarea arrived at the house where we were. |
The Spirit told me to go with them without hesitating. These six brothers went with me, too, and we entered the house of the man from Caesarea. | 12The Spirit told me to accompany them with no doubts at all. These six brothers also accompanied me, and we went into the man's house. |
Then he told us how he had seen an angel standing in his home and saying, 'Send messengers to Joppa and summon Simon, who is called Peter. | 13He reported to us how he had seen the angel standing in his house and saying, 'Send to Joppa, and call for Simon, who is also named Peter. |
He will discuss with you how you and your entire household will be saved.' | 14He will speak a message to you by which you and all your household will be saved.' |
"When I began to speak, the Holy Spirit fell on them just as he was first given to us. | 15"As I began to speak, the Holy Spirit came down on them, just as on us at the beginning. |
Then I remembered what the Lord had said: 'John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.' | 16I remembered the word of the Lord, how he said, 'John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.' |
Now if God gave them the same gift that he gave us when we believed in the Lord Jesus, the Messiah, who was I to try to stop God?" | 17If, then, God gave them the same gift that he also gave to us when we believed in the Lord Jesus Christ, how could I possibly hinder God?" |
When they heard this, they calmed down, and praised God by saying, "So God has given repentance that leads to life even to gentiles." | 18When they heard this they became silent. And they glorified God, saying, "So then, God has given repentance resulting in life even to the Gentiles." |
Now the people who were scattered by the persecution that started because of Stephen went as far as Phoenicia, Cyprus, and Antioch, speaking the word to no one except Jews. | 19Now those who had been scattered as a result of the persecution that started because of Stephen made their way as far as Phoenicia, Cyprus, and Antioch, speaking the word to no one except Jews. |
But among them were some men from Cyprus and Cyrene, who came to Antioch and began proclaiming the Lord Jesus even to the Hellenistic Jews. | 20But there were some of them, men from Cyprus and Cyrene, who came to Antioch and began speaking to the Greeks also, proclaiming the good news about the Lord Jesus. |
The hand of the Lord was with them, and a large number of people believed and turned to the Lord. | 21The Lord's hand was with them, and a large number who believed turned to the Lord. |
When the church in Jerusalem heard this news, they sent Barnabas all the way to Antioch. | 22News about them reached the church in Jerusalem, and they sent out Barnabas to travel as far as Antioch. |
When he arrived, he rejoiced to see what the grace of God had done, and with hearty determination he kept encouraging all of them to remain faithful to the Lord, | 23When he arrived and saw the grace of God, he was glad and encouraged all of them to remain true to the Lord with devoted hearts, |
because he was a good man, full of the Holy Spirit and faith. And so a large number of people was brought to the Lord. | 24for he was a good man, full of the Holy Spirit and of faith. And large numbers of people were added to the Lord. |
Then Barnabas left for Tarsus to look for Saul. | 25Then he went to Tarsus to search for Saul, |
When he found him, he brought him to Antioch, and for a whole year they were guests of the church and taught many people. It was in Antioch that the disciples were first called Christians. | 26and when he found him he brought him to Antioch. For a whole year they met with the church and taught large numbers. The disciples were first called Christians at Antioch. |
At that time some prophets from Jerusalem came down to Antioch. | 27In those days some prophets came down from Jerusalem to Antioch. |
One of them named Agabus got up and predicted by the Spirit that there would be a severe famine all over the world. This happened during the reign of Claudius. | 28One of them, named Agabus, stood up and predicted by the Spirit that there would be a severe famine throughout the Roman world. This took place during the reign of Claudius. |
So all of the disciples decided they would send a contribution to the brothers living in Judea, as they were able, | 29Each of the disciples, according to his ability, determined to send relief to the brothers and sisters who lived in Judea. |
by sending it through Barnabas and Saul to the elders. | 30They did this, sending it to the elders by means of Barnabas and Saul. |
