This is the beginning of the gospel of Jesus the Messiah, the Son of God.1The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God.
As it is written in the prophet Isaiah, "See! I am sending my messenger ahead of you, who will prepare your way. 2As it is written in Isaiah the prophet, “Behold, I send my messenger before your face, who will prepare your way,
He is a voice calling out in the wilderness: 'Prepare the way for the Lord! Make his paths straight!'" 3the voice of one crying in the wilderness: ‘Prepare the way of the Lord, make his paths straight,’”
John was baptizing in the wilderness, proclaiming a baptism about repentance for the forgiveness of sins. 4John appeared, baptizing in the wilderness and proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins.
People from the whole Judean countryside and all the people of Jerusalem were flocking to him, being baptized by him while they confessed their sins. 5And all the country of Judea and all Jerusalem were going out to him and were being baptized by him in the river Jordan, confessing their sins.
Now John was dressed in camel's hair with a leather belt around his waist. He ate grasshoppers and wild honey. 6Now John was clothed with camel’s hair and wore a leather belt around his waist and ate locusts and wild honey.
He kept proclaiming, "The one who is coming after me is stronger than I am, and I am not worthy to bend down and untie his sandal straps. 7And he preached, saying, “After me comes he who is mightier than I, the strap of whose sandals I am not worthy to stoop down and untie.
I baptized you with water, but it is he who will baptize you with the Holy Spirit."8I have baptized you with water, but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.”
In those days Jesus came from Nazareth in Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan. 9In those days Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan.
Just as he was coming up out of the water, he saw the heavens split open and the Spirit descending on him like a dove. 10And when he came up out of the water, immediately he saw the heavens being torn open and the Spirit descending on him like a dove.
Then a voice came from heaven: "You are my Son, whom I love. I am pleased with you!"11And a voice came from heaven, “You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased.”
At once the Spirit drove him into the wilderness. 12The Spirit immediately drove him out into the wilderness.
He was in the wilderness for 40 days being tempted by Satan. He was among wild animals, and angels were ministering to him.13And he was in the wilderness forty days, being tempted by Satan. And he was with the wild animals, and the angels were ministering to him.
Now after John had been arrested, Jesus went to Galilee and proclaimed the gospel about the kingdom of God. 14Now after John was arrested, Jesus came into Galilee, proclaiming the gospel of God,
He said, "The time is now! The kingdom of God is near! Repent, and keep believing the gospel!"15and saying, “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent and believe in the gospel.”
While Jesus was walking beside the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and his brother Andrew. They were throwing a net into the sea because they were fishermen. 16Passing alongside the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and Andrew the brother of Simon casting a net into the sea, for they were fishermen.
Jesus told them, "Follow me, and I'll make you fishers of people!" 17And Jesus said to them, “Follow me, and I will make you become fishers of men.”
So immediately they left their nets and followed him. 18And immediately they left their nets and followed him.
Going on a little farther, he saw James, the son of Zebedee, and his brother John. They were in a boat repairing their nets. 19And going on a little farther, he saw James the son of Zebedee and John his brother, who were in their boat mending the nets.
He immediately called them, and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired men and followed him.20And immediately he called them, and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired servants and followed him.
Then they went to Capernaum. As soon as it was the Sabbaths, Jesus went into the synagogue and began to teach. 21And they went into Capernaum, and immediately on the Sabbath he entered the synagogue and was teaching.
The people were utterly amazed at his teaching, because he was teaching them like one with authority, and not like their scribes. 22And they were astonished at his teaching, for he taught them as one who had authority, and not as the scribes.
All of a sudden, there was a man in their synagogue who had an unclean spirit! He screamed, 23And immediately there was in their synagogue a man with an unclean spirit. And he cried out,
"What do you want with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are—the Holy One of God!"24“What have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are—the Holy One of God.”
But Jesus rebuked him. "Be quiet," he ordered, "and come out of him!" 25But Jesus rebuked him, saying, “Be silent, and come out of him!”
At this, the unclean spirit shook the man, cried out with a loud voice, and came out of him.26And the unclean spirit, convulsing him and crying out with a loud voice, came out of him.
All the people were so stunned that they kept saying to each other, "What is this? A new teaching with authority! He tells even the unclean spirits what to do, and they obey him!" 27And they were all amazed, so that they questioned among themselves, saying, “What is this? A new teaching with authority! He commands even the unclean spirits, and they obey him.”
At once his fame began to spread throughout the surrounding region of Galilee.28And at once his fame spread everywhere throughout all the surrounding region of Galilee.
After they left the synagogue, they went directly to the house of Simon and Andrew, along with James and John. 29And immediately he left the synagogue and entered the house of Simon and Andrew, with James and John.
Now Simon's mother-in-law was lying in bed, sick with a fever, so they promptly told Jesus about her. 30Now Simon’s mother-in-law lay ill with a fever, and immediately they told him about her.
He went up to her, took her by the hand, and helped her up. The fever left her, and she began serving them. 31And he came and took her by the hand and lifted her up, and the fever left her, and she began to serve them.
When evening came, after the sun had set, people started bringing to him everyone who was sick or possessed by demons. 32That evening at sundown they brought to him all who were sick or oppressed by demons.
In fact, the whole city gathered at the door. 33And the whole city was gathered together at the door.
He healed many who were sick with various diseases and drove out many demons. However, he wouldn't allow the demons to speak because they knew who he was.34And he healed many who were sick with various diseases, and cast out many demons. And he would not permit the demons to speak, because they knew him.
In the morning, while it was still very dark, Jesus got up and went to a deserted place and prayed there. 35And rising very early in the morning, while it was still dark, he departed and went out to a desolate place, and there he prayed.
Simon and his companions searched frantically for him. 36And Simon and those who were with him searched for him,
When they found him, they told him, "Everyone's looking for you."37and they found him and said to him, “Everyone is looking for you.”
"Let's go to the neighboring town," he replied, "so I can preach there, too, because that's why I came." 38And he said to them, “Let us go on to the next towns, that I may preach there also, for that is why I came out.”
So he went throughout Galilee, preaching in their synagogues and driving out demons.39And he went throughout all Galilee, preaching in their synagogues and casting out demons.
Then a leper came to Jesus and began pleading with him. He fell on his knees and told him, "If you want to, you can make me clean."40And a leper came to him, imploring him, and kneeling said to him, “If you will, you can make me clean.”
Moved with compassion, Jesus reached out his hand, touched him, and told him, "I do want to. Be made clean!" 41Moved with pity, he stretched out his hand and touched him and said to him, “I will; be clean.”
Instantly the leprosy left him, and he was clean.42And immediately the leprosy left him, and he was made clean.
Then Jesus sternly warned him and encouraged him to go at once. 43And Jesus sternly charged him and sent him away at once,
He told the man, "Be sure that you don't tell anyone. Instead, go and show yourself to the priest, and then offer for your cleansing what Moses commanded as proof to the authorities."44and said to him, “See that you say nothing to anyone, but go, show yourself to the priest and offer for your cleansing what Moses commanded, for a proof to them.”
But when the man left, he began to proclaim it freely. He spread the news so widely that Jesus could no longer enter a town openly, but had to stay out in deserted places. Still, people kept coming to him from everywhere.45But he went out and began to talk freely about it, and to spread the news, so that Jesus could no longer openly enter a town, but was out in desolate places, and people were coming to him from every quarter.
