From: Paul, a servant of Jesus the Messiah, called to be an apostle and set apart for God's gospel, | 1Paul, a slave of Christ Jesus, called as an apostle and singled out for God's good news-- |
which he promised beforehand through his prophets in the Holy Scriptures | 2which He promised long ago through His prophets in the Holy Scriptures-- |
regarding his Son. He was a descendant of David with respect to his humanity | 3concerning His Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, who was a descendant of David according to the flesh |
and was declared by the resurrection from the dead to be the powerful Son of God according to the spirit of holiness—Jesus the Messiah, our Lord. | 4and who has been declared to be the powerful Son of God by the resurrection from the dead according to the Spirit of holiness. |
Through him we received grace and a commission as an apostle to bring about faithful obedience among all the gentiles for the sake of his name. | 5We have received grace and apostleship through Him to bring about the obedience of faith among all the nations, on behalf of His name, |
You, too, are among those who have been called to belong to Jesus the Messiah. | 6including yourselves who also belong to Jesus Christ by calling: |
To: Everyone in Rome, loved by God and called to be holy. May grace and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus, the Messiah, be yours! | 7To all who are in Rome, loved by God, called as saints. Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. |
First of all, I thank my God through Jesus the Messiah for all of you, because the news about your faith is being reported throughout the world. | 8First, I thank my God through Jesus Christ for all of you because the news of your faith is being reported in all the world. |
For God, whom I serve with my spirit by preaching the gospel about his Son, is my witness how constantly I mention you | 9For God, whom I serve with my spirit in telling the good news about His Son, is my witness that I constantly mention you, |
in my prayers at all times, asking that somehow by God's will I may at last succeed in coming to you. | 10always asking in my prayers that if it is somehow in God's will, I may now at last succeed in coming to you. |
For I am longing to see you so that I may impart to you some spiritual gift to make you strong, | 11For I want very much to see you, so I may impart to you some spiritual gift to strengthen you, |
that is, that we may be mutually encouraged by each other's faith, both yours and mine. | 12that is, to be mutually encouraged by each other's faith, both yours and mine. |
I do not want you to be unaware, brothers, that I often planned to come to you (but have been prevented from doing so until now), so that I might reap a harvest among you, just as I have among the rest of the gentiles. | 13Now I want you to know, brothers, that I often planned to come to you (but was prevented until now) in order that I might have a fruitful ministry among you, just as among the rest of the Gentiles. |
Both to Greeks and to barbarians, both to wise and to foolish people, I am a debtor. | 14I am obligated both to Greeks and barbarians, both to the wise and the foolish. |
That is why I am so eager to proclaim the gospel to you who live in Rome, too. | 15So I am eager to preach the good news to you also who are in Rome. |
For I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is God's power for the salvation of everyone who believes, of the Jew first and of the Greek as well. | 16For I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is God's power for salvation to everyone who believes, first to the Jew, and also to the Greek. |
For in the gospel God's righteousness is being revealed from faith to faith, as it is written, "The righteous will live by faith." | 17For in it God's righteousness is revealed from faith to faith, just as it is written: The righteous will live by faith. |
For God's wrath is being revealed from heaven against all the ungodliness and wickedness of those who in their wickedness suppress the truth. | 18For God's wrath is revealed from heaven against all godlessness and unrighteousness of people who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth, |
For what can be known about God is plain to them, because God himself has made it plain to them. | 19since what can be known about God is evident among them, because God has shown it to them. |
For since the creation of the world God's invisible attributes—his eternal power and divine nature—have been understood and observed by what he made, so that people are without excuse. | 20For His invisible attributes, that is, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen since the creation of the world, being understood through what He has made. As a result, people are without excuse. |
For although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to him. Instead, their thoughts turned to worthless things, and their senseless hearts were darkened. | 21For though they knew God, they did not glorify Him as God or show gratitude. Instead, their thinking became nonsense, and their senseless minds were darkened. |
Though claiming to be wise, they became fools | 22Claiming to be wise, they became fools |
and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images that looked like mortal human beings, birds, four-footed animals, and reptiles. | 23and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images resembling mortal man, birds, four-footed animals, and reptiles. |
For this reason, God delivered them to sexual impurity as they followed the lusts of their hearts and dishonored their bodies with one another. | 24Therefore God delivered them over in the cravings of their hearts to sexual impurity, so that their bodies were degraded among themselves. |
They exchanged God's truth for a lie and worshipped and served the creation rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever. Amen. | 25They exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshiped and served something created instead of the Creator, who is praised forever. Amen. |
For this reason, God delivered them to degrading passions as their females exchanged their natural sexual function for one that is unnatural. | 26This is why God delivered them over to degrading passions. For even their females exchanged natural sexual relations for unnatural ones. |
In the same way, their males also abandoned their natural sexual function toward females and burned with lust toward one another. Males committed indecent acts with males, and received within themselves the appropriate penalty for their perversion. | 27The males in the same way also left natural relations with females and were inflamed in their lust for one another. Males committed shameless acts with males and received in their own persons the appropriate penalty of their error. |
Furthermore, because they did not think it worthwhile to keep knowing God fully, God delivered them to degraded minds to perform acts that should not be done. | 28And because they did not think it worthwhile to acknowledge God, God delivered them over to a worthless mind to do what is morally wrong. |
They have become filled with every kind of wickedness, evil, greed, and depravity. They are full of envy, murder, quarreling, deceit, and viciousness. They are gossips, | 29They are filled with all unrighteousness, evil, greed, and wickedness. They are full of envy, murder, quarrels, deceit, and malice. They are gossips, |
slanderers, God-haters, haughty, arrogant, boastful, inventors of evil, disobedient to their parents, | 30slanderers, God-haters, arrogant, proud, boastful, inventors of evil, disobedient to parents, |
foolish, faithless, heartless, and ruthless. | 31undiscerning, untrustworthy, unloving, and unmerciful. |
Although they know God's just requirement—that those who practice such things deserve to die—they not only do these things but even applaud others who practice them. | 32Although they know full well God's just sentence--that those who practice such things deserve to die--they not only do them, but even applaud others who practice them. |
