Psalm 44
International Standard VersionKing James Bible
God, we heard it with our ears; our ancestors told us about what you did in their day— a long time ago.1To the chief Musician for the sons of Korah, Maschil. We have heard with our ears, O God, our fathers have told us, what work thou didst in their days, in the times of old.
With your hand you expelled the nations and established our ancestors. You afflicted nations and cast them out.2How thou didst drive out the heathen with thy hand, and plantedst them; how thou didst afflict the people, and cast them out.
It was not with their sword that they inherited the land, nor did their own arm deliver them. But it was by your power, your strength, and by the light of your face; because you were pleased with them.3For they got not the land in possession by their own sword, neither did their own arm save them: but thy right hand, and thine arm, and the light of thy countenance, because thou hadst a favour unto them.
You are my king, God, command victories for Jacob.4Thou art my King, O God: command deliverances for Jacob.
Through you we will knock down our oppressors; through your name we will tread down those who rise up against us.5Through thee will we push down our enemies: through thy name will we tread them under that rise up against us.
For I place no confidence in my bow, nor will my sword deliver me.6For I will not trust in my bow, neither shall my sword save me.
For you delivered us from our oppressors and put to shame those who hate us.7But thou hast saved us from our enemies, and hast put them to shame that hated us.
We will praise God all day long; and to your name we will give thanks forever. Interlude8In God we boast all the day long, and praise thy name for ever. Selah.
However, you cast us off and made us ashamed! You did not even march with our armies!9But thou hast cast off, and put us to shame; and goest not forth with our armies.
You made us retreat from our oppressors. Our enemies ransacked us.10Thou makest us to turn back from the enemy: and they which hate us spoil for themselves.
You handed us over to be slaughtered like sheep and you scattered us among the nations.11Thou hast given us like sheep appointed for meat; and hast scattered us among the heathen.
You sold out your people for nothing, and made no profit at that price.12Thou sellest thy people for nought, and dost not increase thy wealth by their price.
You made us a laughing stock to our neighbors, a source of mockery and derision to those around us.13Thou makest us a reproach to our neighbours, a scorn and a derision to them that are round about us.
You made us an object lesson among the nations; people shake their heads at us. 14Thou makest us a byword among the heathen, a shaking of the head among the people.
My dishonor tortures me continuously; the shame on my face overwhelms me15My confusion is continually before me, and the shame of my face hath covered me,
because of the voice of the one who mocks and reviles, because of the enemy and the avenger.16For the voice of him that reproacheth and blasphemeth; by reason of the enemy and avenger.
All this came upon us, yet we did not forsake you, and we have not dealt falsely with your covenant;17All this is come upon us; yet have we not forgotten thee, neither have we dealt falsely in thy covenant.
Our hearts have not turned away; our steps have not swerved from your path.18Our heart is not turned back, neither have our steps declined from thy way;
Nevertheless, you crushed us in the lair of jackals, and covered us in deep darkness. 19Though thou hast sore broken us in the place of dragons, and covered us with the shadow of death.
If we had forgotten the name of our God or lifted our hands to a foreign god,20If we have forgotten the name of our God, or stretched out our hands to a strange god;
wouldn't God find out since he knows the secrets of the heart?21Shall not God search this out? for he knoweth the secrets of the heart.
For your sake we are being killed all day long. We are thought of as sheep to be slaughtered.22Yea, for thy sake are we killed all the day long; we are counted as sheep for the slaughter.
Wake up! Why are you asleep, Lord? Get up! Don't cast us off forever!23Awake, why sleepest thou, O Lord? arise, cast us not off for ever.
Why are you hiding your face? Why are you ignoring our affliction and oppression?24Wherefore hidest thou thy face, and forgettest our affliction and our oppression?
For we have collapsed in the dust; our bodies cling to the ground.25For our soul is bowed down to the dust: our belly cleaveth unto the earth.
Arise! Deliver us! Redeem us according to your gracious love!26Arise for our help, and redeem us for thy mercies' sake.
