When Jesus had finished saying these things, he left Galilee and went to the territory of Judea on the other side of the Jordan. 1Now when Jesus finished these sayings, he left Galilee and went to the region of Judea beyond the Jordan River.
Large crowds followed him, and he healed them there.2Large crowds followed him, and he healed them there.
Some Pharisees came to him in order to test him. They asked, "Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife for any reason?"3Then some Pharisees came to him in order to test him. They asked, "Is it lawful to divorce a wife for any cause?"
He answered them, "Haven't you read that the one who made them at the beginning 'made them male and female'4He answered, "Have you not read that from the beginning the Creator made them male and female,
and said, 'That is why a man will leave his father and mother and be united with his wife, and the two will become one flesh'?5and said, 'For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and will be united with his wife, and the two will become one flesh'?
So they are no longer two, but one flesh. Therefore, what God has joined together, man must never separate."6So they are no longer two, but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let no one separate."
They asked him, "Why, then, did Moses order us 'to give a certificate of divorce and divorce her'?" 7They said to him, "Why then did Moses command us to give a certificate of dismissal and to divorce her?"
He told them, "It was because of your hardness of heart that Moses allowed you to divorce your wives. But from the beginning it was not this way. 8Jesus said to them, "Moses permitted you to divorce your wives because of your hard hearts, but from the beginning it was not this way.
I tell you that whoever divorces his wife, except for sexual immorality, and marries another woman commits adultery." 9Now I say to you that whoever divorces his wife, except for immorality, and marries another commits adultery."
His disciples asked him, "If that is the relationship of a man with his wife, it's not worth getting married!"10The disciples said to him, "If this is the case of a husband with a wife, it is better not to marry!"
"Not everyone can accept this saying," he replied, "except those to whom celibacy has been granted, 11He said to them, "Not everyone can accept this statement, except those to whom it has been given.
because some men are celibate from birth, while some are celibate because they have been made that way by others. Still others are celibate because they have made themselves that way for the sake of the kingdom from heaven. Let anyone accept this who can."12For there are some eunuchs who were that way from birth, and some who were made eunuchs by others, and some who became eunuchs for the sake of the kingdom of heaven. The one who is able to accept this should accept it."
Then some little children were brought to him so that he might lay his hands on them and pray. But the disciples rebuked those who brought them. 13Then little children were brought to him for him to lay his hands on them and pray. But the disciples scolded those who brought them.
Jesus, however, said, "Let the little children come to me, and stop keeping them away, because the kingdom from heaven belongs to people like these." 14But Jesus said, "Let the little children come to me and do not try to stop them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these."
When he had laid his hands on them, he went on from there.15And he placed his hands on them and went on his way.
Just then a man came up to Jesus. "Teacher," he asked, "what good deed should I do to have eternal life?"16Now someone came up to him and said, "Teacher, what good thing must I do to gain eternal life?"
Jesus asked him, "Why ask me about what is good? There is only one who is good. If you want to get into that life, you must keep the commandments."17He said to him, "Why do you ask me about what is good? There is only one who is good. But if you want to enter into life, keep the commandments."
The young man asked him, "Which ones?" Jesus said, "'You must not murder, you must not commit adultery, you must not steal, you must not give false testimony,18"Which ones?" he asked. Jesus replied, "Do not murder, do not commit adultery, do not steal, do not give false testimony,
honor your father and mother,' and, 'you must love your neighbor as yourself.'" 19honor your father and mother, and love your neighbor as yourself."
The young man told him, "I have kept all of these. What do I still lack?"20The young man said to him, "I have wholeheartedly obeyed all these laws. What do I still lack?"
Jesus told him, "If you want to be perfect, go and sell what you own and give the money to the destitute, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come back and follow me." 21Jesus said to him, "If you wish to be perfect, go sell your possessions and give the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me."
But when the young man heard this statement he went away sad, because he had many possessions.22But when the young man heard this he went away sorrowful, for he was very rich.
Then Jesus told his disciples, "I tell all of you with certainty, it will be hard for a rich person to get into the kingdom from heaven. 23Then Jesus said to his disciples, "I tell you the truth, it will be hard for a rich person to enter the kingdom of heaven!
Again I tell you, it is easier for a camel to squeeze through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to get into the kingdom of God."24Again I say, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter into the kingdom of God."
When the disciples heard this, they were completely astonished. "Who, then, can be saved?" they asked.25The disciples were greatly astonished when they heard this and said, "Then who can be saved?"
Jesus looked at them intently and said, "For humans this is impossible, but for God all things are possible."26Jesus looked at them and replied, "This is impossible for mere humans, but for God all things are possible."
"Look!" Peter replied. "We have left everything and followed you. So what will we get?"27Then Peter said to him, "Look, we have left everything to follow you! What then will there be for us?"
Jesus told them, "I tell all of you with certainty, when the Son of Man sits on his glorious throne in the renewed creation, you who have followed me will also sit on twelve thrones, governing the twelve tribes of Israel. 28Jesus said to them, "I tell you the truth: In the age when all things are renewed, when the Son of Man sits on his glorious throne, you who have followed me will also sit on twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel.
In fact, everyone who has left his homes, brothers, sisters, father, mother, children, or fields because of my name will receive a hundred times as much and will inherit eternal life. 29And whoever has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or children or fields for my sake will receive a hundred times as much and will inherit eternal life.
But many who are first will be last, and the last will be first."30But many who are first will be last, and the last first.
