When Jesus had finished saying these things, he left Galilee and went to the territory of Judea on the other side of the Jordan.
Large crowds followed him, and he healed them there.2καὶ ἠκολούθησαν αὐτῷ ὄχλοι πολλοί καὶ ἐθεράπευσεν αὐτοὺς ἐκεῖ
Some Pharisees came to him in order to test him. They asked, "Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife for any reason?"3Καὶ προσῆλθον αὐτῷ Φαρισαῖοι πειράζοντες αὐτὸν καὶ λέγοντες Εἰ ἔξεστιν ‹ἀνθρώπῳ› ἀπολῦσαι τὴν γυναῖκα αὐτοῦ κατὰ πᾶσαν αἰτίαν
He answered them, "Haven't you read that the one who made them at the beginning 'made them male and female'4 δὲ ἀποκριθεὶς εἶπεν Οὐκ ἀνέγνωτε ὅτι κτίσας ἀπ’ ἀρχῆς Ἄρσεν καὶ θῆλυ ἐποίησεν αὐτοὺς
and said, 'That is why a man will leave his father and mother and be united with his wife, and the two will become one flesh'?5καὶ εἶπεν Ἕνεκα τούτου καταλείψει ἄνθρωπος τὸν πατέρα καὶ τὴν μητέρα καὶ κολληθήσεται τῇ γυναικὶ αὐτοῦ καὶ ἔσονται οἱ δύο εἰς σάρκα μίαν
So they are no longer two, but one flesh. Therefore, what God has joined together, man must never separate."6ὥστε οὐκέτι εἰσὶν δύο ἀλλὰ σὰρξ μία οὖν Θεὸς συνέζευξεν ἄνθρωπος μὴ χωριζέτω
They asked him, "Why, then, did Moses order us 'to give a certificate of divorce and divorce her'?" 7Λέγουσιν αὐτῷ Τί οὖν Μωϋσῆς ἐνετείλατο δοῦναι βιβλίον ἀποστασίου καὶ ἀπολῦσαι ‹αὐτήν›
He told them, "It was because of your hardness of heart that Moses allowed you to divorce your wives. But from the beginning it was not this way. 8Λέγει αὐτοῖς Ὅτι Μωϋσῆς πρὸς τὴν σκληροκαρδίαν ὑμῶν ἐπέτρεψεν ὑμῖν ἀπολῦσαι τὰς γυναῖκας ὑμῶν ἀπ’ ἀρχῆς δὲ οὐ γέγονεν οὕτως
I tell you that whoever divorces his wife, except for sexual immorality, and marries another woman commits adultery." 9λέγω δὲ ὑμῖν ὅτι ὃς ἂν ἀπολύσῃ τὴν γυναῖκα αὐτοῦ μὴ ἐπὶ πορνείᾳ καὶ γαμήσῃ ἄλλην μοιχᾶται ‹καὶ ἀπολελυμένην γαμήσας μοιχᾶται›
His disciples asked him, "If that is the relationship of a man with his wife, it's not worth getting married!"10Λέγουσιν αὐτῷ οἱ μαθηταί [αὐτοῦ] Εἰ οὕτως ἐστὶν αἰτία τοῦ ἀνθρώπου μετὰ τῆς γυναικός οὐ συμφέρει γαμῆσαι
"Not everyone can accept this saying," he replied, "except those to whom celibacy has been granted, 11 δὲ εἶπεν αὐτοῖς Οὐ πάντες χωροῦσιν τὸν λόγον τοῦτον ἀλλ’ οἷς δέδοται
because some men are celibate from birth, while some are celibate because they have been made that way by others. Still others are celibate because they have made themselves that way for the sake of the kingdom from heaven. Let anyone accept this who can."12εἰσὶν γὰρ εὐνοῦχοι οἵτινες ἐκ κοιλίας μητρὸς ἐγεννήθησαν οὕτως καὶ εἰσὶν εὐνοῦχοι οἵτινες εὐνουχίσθησαν ὑπὸ τῶν ἀνθρώπων καὶ εἰσὶν εὐνοῦχοι οἵτινες εὐνούχισαν ἑαυτοὺς διὰ τὴν βασιλείαν τῶν οὐρανῶν δυνάμενος χωρεῖν χωρείτω
Then some little children were brought to him so that he might lay his hands on them and pray. But the disciples rebuked those who brought them.
Jesus, however, said, "Let the little children come to me, and stop keeping them away, because the kingdom from heaven belongs to people like these." 14 δὲ Ἰησοῦς εἶπεν Ἄφετε τὰ παιδία καὶ μὴ κωλύετε αὐτὰ ἐλθεῖν πρός με τῶν γὰρ τοιούτων ἐστὶν βασιλεία τῶν οὐρανῶν
When he had laid his hands on them, he went on from there.15καὶ ἐπιθεὶς τὰς χεῖρας αὐτοῖς ἐπορεύθη ἐκεῖθεν
Just then a man came up to Jesus. "Teacher," he asked, "what good deed should I do to have eternal life?"16Καὶ ἰδοὺ εἷς προσελθὼν αὐτῷ εἶπεν Διδάσκαλε τί ἀγαθὸν ποιήσω ἵνα σχῶ ζωὴν αἰώνιον
Jesus asked him, "Why ask me about what is good? There is only one who is good. If you want to get into that life, you must keep the commandments."17 δὲ εἶπεν αὐτῷ Τί με ἐρωτᾷς περὶ τοῦ ἀγαθοῦ εἷς ἐστιν ἀγαθός εἰ δὲ θέλεις εἰς τὴν ζωὴν εἰσελθεῖν τήρησον* τὰς ἐντολάς
The young man asked him, "Which ones?" Jesus said, "'You must not murder, you must not commit adultery, you must not steal, you must not give false testimony,18Λέγει αὐτῷ Ποίας δὲ Ἰησοῦς εἶπεν* Τὸ Οὐ φονεύσεις Οὐ μοιχεύσεις Οὐ κλέψεις Οὐ ψευδομαρτυρήσεις
honor your father and mother,' and, 'you must love your neighbor as yourself.'" 19Τίμα τὸν πατέρα καὶ τὴν μητέρα καὶ Ἀγαπήσεις τὸν πλησίον σου ὡς σεαυτόν
The young man told him, "I have kept all of these. What do I still lack?"20Λέγει αὐτῷ νεανίσκος Ταῦτα πάντα ἐφύλαξα τί ἔτι ὑστερῶ
Jesus told him, "If you want to be perfect, go and sell what you own and give the money to the destitute, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come back and follow me." 21Ἔφη αὐτῷ Ἰησοῦς Εἰ θέλεις τέλειος εἶναι ὕπαγε πώλησόν σου τὰ ὑπάρχοντα καὶ δὸς [τοῖς] πτωχοῖς καὶ ἕξεις θησαυρὸν ἐν οὐρανοῖς καὶ δεῦρο ἀκολούθει μοι
But when the young man heard this statement he went away sad, because he had many possessions.22Ἀκούσας δὲ νεανίσκος τὸν λόγον (τοῦτον) ἀπῆλθεν λυπούμενος ἦν γὰρ ἔχων κτήματα πολλά
Then Jesus told his disciples, "I tell all of you with certainty, it will be hard for a rich person to get into the kingdom from heaven. 23 δὲ Ἰησοῦς εἶπεν τοῖς μαθηταῖς αὐτοῦ Ἀμὴν λέγω ὑμῖν ὅτι πλούσιος δυσκόλως εἰσελεύσεται εἰς τὴν βασιλείαν τῶν οὐρανῶν
Again I tell you, it is easier for a camel to squeeze through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to get into the kingdom of God."24πάλιν δὲ λέγω ὑμῖν εὐκοπώτερόν ἐστιν κάμηλον διὰ τρυπήματος ῥαφίδος εἰσελθεῖν πλούσιον [εἰσελθεῖν] εἰς τὴν βασιλείαν τοῦ Θεοῦ
When the disciples heard this, they were completely astonished. "Who, then, can be saved?" they asked.25Ἀκούσαντες δὲ οἱ μαθηταὶ ἐξεπλήσσοντο σφόδρα λέγοντες Τίς ἄρα δύναται σωθῆναι
Jesus looked at them intently and said, "For humans this is impossible, but for God all things are possible."26Ἐμβλέψας δὲ Ἰησοῦς εἶπεν αὐτοῖς Παρὰ ἀνθρώποις τοῦτο ἀδύνατόν ἐστιν παρὰ δὲ Θεῷ πάντα δυνατά
"Look!" Peter replied. "We have left everything and followed you. So what will we get?"27Τότε ἀποκριθεὶς Πέτρος εἶπεν αὐτῷ Ἰδοὺ ἡμεῖς ἀφήκαμεν πάντα καὶ ἠκολουθήσαμέν σοι τί ἄρα ἔσται ἡμῖν
Jesus told them, "I tell all of you with certainty, when the Son of Man sits on his glorious throne in the renewed creation, you who have followed me will also sit on twelve thrones, governing the twelve tribes of Israel.
In fact, everyone who has left his homes, brothers, sisters, father, mother, children, or fields because of my name will receive a hundred times as much and will inherit eternal life.
But many who are first will be last, and the last will be first."30Πολλοὶ δὲ ἔσονται πρῶτοι ἔσχατοι καὶ ἔσχατοι πρῶτοι
